I don't doubt your story about the INS failure and the iPad 2 coming in handy, however I'm sure it wasn't in 2009 since the iPad 1 wasn't announced until January 27 2010 (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2010/01/27Apple-Launches-iPad/) and wasn't released until April 3, 2010.

Man you’re right i was way off on my years! Sign of old age all these flights are blending together Bought gps in 2012 so it was in 2012 not 2009.
hard to believe we were still flying a 767 without GPS in 2012! I don’t know which is slower the FAA or the flying companies that don’t spend money for upgrades until they have to.

@donkaye, how do you operate the 11" iPad in the cockpit? Mounted somewhere? Thanks for the PIREP!

Following the recommendation of another MSer, I bought a magnetic car mount on Amazon and mounted it to the top of the yoke. The 11" Pro fits perfectly in portrait mode in the middle of the yoke. Way better than kneepad imo, and the magnetic mount is robust enough to hold it there, and still super easy to remove it doing that is useful. Had a ram mount there from previous owner, but the magnetic is simpler, smaller, lighter, and less obtrusive.

Really really really dumb question but I don't mind showing my ignorance.  I've resisted using an iPad.  Bought one years ago, put an USB port in my plane, paid for the subscription and never used it.  What provides the aircraft position information to the application on the iPad when in flight?

It has a built-in GPS of course, but in my case, GPS and traffic comes directly from the GTX345 via Bluetooth. I've got no love for Bluetooth as a protocol, but this setup has worked reliably every time so far.

Can you provide a link to said magnetic car mount for your yoke setup? Picture of ipad on your mount?

Image attached.  Amazon order history isn't showing right now, but pretty sure this is the mount I have.

So how does the magnetic mount attach to the yoke? Via a clamp or magnet?

+1 for magnetic yoke mounts, best combination of easy/light/cheap I've seen.

I prefer the Nite Ize "steelie ball" mounts over the plate-type mount linked to above (be sure you get the larger tablet size ball, not the smaller phone size).  The reason is that a ball mount allows you to easily pivot the tablet a bit in flight.  This turns out to be super handy for writing, and when the angle of the sun is just right to cast glare reflection in your eyes.
