N91CP Posted August 7, 2021 Report Posted August 7, 2021 ‘78 M20J is in annual and mech says the aft-most bell-crank assembly has loose rivets and must be replaced. It seems to be one that is part of the push/pull assembly for the elevator. He doesn’t really know how to access this assembly and says it could take lots of hours disassembling things in order to get to it. Has anyone encountered this before? Is there an easy solution?
N201MKTurbo Posted August 7, 2021 Report Posted August 7, 2021 I took mine completely apart once. It is a real PITA! Im not saying this for sure, but it might be easier to take the tail off.
carusoam Posted August 7, 2021 Report Posted August 7, 2021 Welcome aboard 1CP. See if you can start with posting a pic? This will help assure we are all discussing the same thing. Best regards, -a-
MB65E Posted August 7, 2021 Report Posted August 7, 2021 My aft Rudder bell crank is a little sloppy. Love to change the bearing in it. But I’ve struggled for a long time to remove it, and refuse to pay anyone else to figure it out. I’ve been told there are access holes in the H-Stab for access with a 3/8 socket. However, I have an early E and I think they forgot to drill the holes in the H-stab rib as mine doesn’t have the holes. I can get the nut off but the bolt hits the side wall… detailed pictures would be helpful. -Matt
Dmax Posted August 9, 2021 Report Posted August 9, 2021 We replace them often, especially on TKS planes. The rivets get loose. Money has a replacement that is one piece or you can remove yours and replace rivets with hi lock rivets
carusoam Posted August 9, 2021 Report Posted August 9, 2021 Rich, Matt, and new guy… @MB65E @N201MKTurbo and @N91CP Message from Longview came in for you… Go MS! Best regards, -a- 1

I’ve had the nut off but the bolt hits the sidewall. -Matt

N91CP Posted August 9, 2021 Author Report Posted August 9, 2021 We're going out to the shop today. I'll see if I can get a photo or two.

Yours should have holes in the two inner most ribs of the horizontal stab. With the nut removed you should be able to work the bolt out passing the head of the bolt into the clearance hole in the rib. Before disassembling it take pictures and note the location of any washers slipped between the bellcranks and the 3 mounting brackets. Mooney is famous for adding them. Reassembly and slipping and washers back in place can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. Clarence
Guest Posted August 9, 2021 Report Posted August 9, 2021 Working on an Ovation today and took some pictures and a video. The elevator walking began in the tailcone has loose huck bolts. In the background you can see the bolt clearance hole in the stabilizer butt rib. IMG_1706.MP4
carusoam Posted August 10, 2021 Report Posted August 10, 2021 Clarence, Was the owner aware of the issue, or something you found during other maintenance? Best regards, -a-

Will.iam Posted August 12, 2021 Report Posted August 12, 2021 Ah my worst fear going into my first annual.

Igor_U Posted August 12, 2021 Report Posted August 12, 2021 Interesting... There is no visible, exposed thread from the Huck bolt on those collars. I am not sure if that's how Huck's are designed but there's a reason why (almost) everyone in aerospace uses Hi-Lites.
Guest Posted August 12, 2021 Report Posted August 12, 2021 The rudder walking beam must be under less/different stress as it’s held together with AN470AD4 rivets. Clarence
