StevenL757 Posted July 12, 2021 Report Posted July 12, 2021 Apologies...will retract this if already posted elsewhere. I know many of us in the NE either know of, or have flown into this little airport gem. Personally, I've flown a couple of Angel Flight patients from here, eaten at the restaurant many times, and have enjoyed the food at the nearby bar/pub next to the pool. I'd hate to see it go. I understand we all need to grow and progress as a society, but to the real estate developers at their finest..."please leave our airports alone". https://www.70and73.com/news/pilots-worry-about-the-future-if-the-flying-w-airport-in-medford-turns-into-a/article_858cae10-d29c-11eb-8025-9fcbe1d819b0.html Quote
takair Posted July 12, 2021 Report Posted July 12, 2021 The NE rep is quoted in the article, but the quote doesn’t sound encouraging or like it would make a dent in the outcome. Seems these closures are driven by tax income potential….plus the usual complaints. My old local airport (Johnnycake for those who have been in the CT area for some time) was shut down due to monetary disputes and was supposed to be developed. Must be 20 years ago now….runway is still there, overgrown and the ramp and hangars are occupied by what must a bus company. Surely a bus company could have been compatible with an airport. Seems like a strategy would be to pair compatible, tax generating industries with airports. Easier said than done, I suppose. Quote
carusoam Posted July 13, 2021 Report Posted July 13, 2021 Flying W is a classic NJ icon of an airport… Complete with a restaurant and country club environment… The big airplane shaped pool is loved by all…. It also has a hotel/inn right there on the property… Makes a great Mooney fly-in location… @201er, @Alan Fox, and a few others… In the neighborhood… there are a bazillion acres of farm land and two other airports… close enough to share traffic pattern space… It is purely imaginary to close this business to develop it into something different… It is already several viable businesses in itself… The end of Covid can revitalize this type of business… +1 for the re-opening trade! Best regards, -a- Quote
Alan Fox Posted July 13, 2021 Report Posted July 13, 2021 This airport has been owned , by a real estate developer for over 20 years , All of the approvals for low income housing are completed , and the federal grant has expired , all the buisnesses combined , dont even come close to what the debt service , on 5 to 6 million dollars would be alone , This ones going bye bye , could be a few years , could be more.... PeteMc Posted July 13, 2021 Report Posted July 13, 2021 Even if it may be a while, I may try and fly in Friday just to make sure I make it in again. Quote
