Kylel14k Posted May 27, 2021 Report Posted May 27, 2021 I’m looking at purchasing a 1964 Mooney M20D and was hoping to get some estimates on what the value is on it. It is currently in annual with about 6000tt. The bad is that it the engine has 2200smo. The good thing about the aircraft is the paint is in good shape and full logs with no accident history. The avionics have been updated with a GTN650, Lynx NGT9000 adsb in/out, Garmin G1 engine monitor. It also has a Hartzell 3 blade propeller. The seller is currently asking $45k for it right now. Quote
Boilermonkey Posted May 27, 2021 Report Posted May 27, 2021 Sounds like it's in the ballpark. Is there an AP? Quote
Hank Posted May 27, 2021 Report Posted May 27, 2021 Is this an original fixed gear, fixed prop D? Or was it modified back in the day with retractable gear and constant speed prop? I believe only 3 unmodified planes remain. 1 Quote
Greg Ellis Posted May 27, 2021 Report Posted May 27, 2021 As long as the compressions are good, the borescope of the cylinders look clean and the oil usage is in the ballpark of normal then I would not worry about the 2200 smoh. If you are interested in purchasing get them to borescope the cylinders during the annual. Quote

MikeOH Posted May 28, 2021 Report Posted May 28, 2021 How much has the plane been flown in the last year? I'm a believer in recent, and consistent, use. My F had 2100 hours when I bought it nearly 4 years ago; 300 hours later and it's still running great. It was flown multiple times per month, over 100 hours/year, for a decade. I think you have a good opportunity here 1 Quote
carusoam Posted May 28, 2021 Report Posted May 28, 2021 The good news... the engine is run-out... Start planning the OH prior to ownership... Get it OH’d the way you want... when you want... PPIs are important... Best regards, -a- Quote
A64Pilot Posted May 28, 2021 Report Posted May 28, 2021 It’s run out, price it as such and you’ll come out OK. I’d throw a number out there and many would scoff as prices are at all time highs. ‘If if we’re you I’d rent for a year cause everything is cyclical and these foolishly high prices will not last. People think compression determines engine condition or a bore scope. ‘They don’t, they determine cylinder condition, cylinders are easy and relatively inexpensive, compared to a full overhaul. Next is oil analysis, it determines oil condition very well, engine not so much, I’ve seen slap worn out motors return a good oil analysis. ‘At 2200 it may have a lot of life left in it, most won’t though and you should go by averages and not hope you have an unusual engine. Engine oil pressure as in how good a pressure does it hold when hot at idle will tell you more than an oil analysis, and inspecting the filter and suction screen just increases your knowledge. Plugs also have a story to tell. Quote
