Hi All,

Just got out of annual and took her on a maiden voyage today form KSMO to L35. Great flight, new heater hoses smell awful, but will dissipate after time. Odd thing - on right seat at the legs it feels like there is heat coming through even though it's off. It's worst in a nose up attitude. Any idea what it could be?

Thank, D

It depends on which heater valve you have. Either way you have to make sure it is closing off completely when it is off. You can see if you remove the hoses on the engine side of the firewall.

If you have the valve with the door that swings, the seals can deteriorate and need to be replaced every few decades. The seals are just baffle seal material. I don’t remember exactly how they are attached but they can be repaired easily.

You can get some 16th inch thick silicone sheet from McMaster Carr and cover the swing valve flapper  inside there with that. The valve with the sliding mechanism doesn’t seal, really, and hot air leaks through. It’s worth it to get the 1979 and later valve and retrofit it.

In theory I believe the the defrost are always on. Given that one of the hoses to the defrost may have fallen down and can't get up.

I'd just fix the one you have. Looks like the only bad part is the flapper. Fabricate a new flapper out of aluminum sheet and rubber sheet from McMaster Carr. Clean up and paint the housing. Should work good as new.

Thought the same thing but the rod area has a lot of play since it too has rusted out a lot.

See if @Alan Fox has one... Later than 65 heat control flap?

65 and older are slide gates...

Look for two... one is for hot air, the other is for outside air...?

That one looks a bit dusty.

:)

Hah, yes, Dusty. The inside air vent is a slide and the outside is flap.
