Lood Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 I need pictures of an actual installation of a spin-on oil filter on a Lycoming IO360A1A, please. If anybody here has the oil filter installed on their E or F models, I would really appreciate a few pictures of the actual installation an oil line routings. Quote
Shadrach Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 I took these pics when I pulled the engine last december, they were not specifically of the Oil filter, but I hope they help. What is it that you are having trouble with? Quote
Lood Posted June 22, 2011 Author Report Posted June 22, 2011 Thanks for the pictures! A friend of mine has one of these that he's not going to use, so I'm planning to have it installed on my engine. I was just interested in how it was installed. Apparently you also get two types. One is fitted remotely while the ather fits onto the engine. The latter seems to be the same as in your pictures. Shadrach Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I've never seen, nor did I know there was a remotely mounted aftermarket filter for 4 cyl Mooneys. If you do, snap a pic so I can see it... I make a mess every time I change the oil. Quote
sreid Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 It's easy to change without making any mess. Just cut a section of PVC pipe in half lengthwise (into a half pipe, if you like the snowboarder/skateboarder term) and slide it under the filter. Loosen the filter, the oil runs down the pipe, and into an appropriately placed container! A little care and you won't spill but a drop or two. Steve Quote
Shadrach Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Steve, I have tried all sorts of various "oil catchers" and It always spills . Do post a pick of your "half pipe" and how you apply it. Quote
fantom Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 This thing works: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/draintool.php Quote
Hank Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 This is what I use. I'll try to add a shot of it stuck under the filter. There's so little room that the mounted oil filter is barely visible in photos from the top, and cannot be seen due to "stuff" in the way from either side. Hope this helps. You just need a big drip bucker, but Wally World sells them cheap. Quote
rob Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 I have the remote filter on my 65C, the STC paperwork says it's made by ADC. It's mounted on the firewall on the right (copilot) side of the plane. I can use an empty coffee jug to contain the oil as it spills out. It definitely makes oil changes quick and clean, but I don't know if I would buy it if it hadn't come on the plane. Quote
markeg1964 Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 The attached photo will probably not help much but I had a spin on filter installed two weeks ago. This was taken after the install. Quote
The-sky-captain Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 Shadrach- Try the new pig form-a- funnel. I've been using it for several years and it's mess free and can catch the oil from the spin on, quick release and the suction screen. Its super flexible and can be manuvered around in the tight spaces Mooney is know for. It's really made the oil changing process much faster and easier. www.formafunnel.com Quote
sreid Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 Ross, Here's a pic of the half-pipe. I've trimmed the end to fit a little better under the oil filter. The right end slides under the filter. It sits pretty stable, but you have to be a little careful to not bump it when it's draining. Otherwise it won't spill at all. I don't have any in-use pics...oil changes have never been an exciting thing that my photographer wanted to document, ha! But it fits pretty much just like Hank's pic. Steve Quote
Shadrach Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks for the heads up guys, I have about 18hrs flt time to go until I need the solution... I will investigate all. Quote
