George Posted November 26, 2016 Report Posted November 26, 2016 Our vernier control vibrates to high RPM..Is this an easy fix or will it require a new control? Thanks GHW Quote

Thanks GHW Some verniers have a friction lock that adjusts friction on the mechanism. If yours does, turn the lock about a quarter turn and you should be able to "tighten" the control. George Posted November 26, 2016 Author Report Posted November 26, 2016 Unfortunately this control does not have the friction lock....I have been resting my hand on the control to keep the knob from vibrating to high rpm.. Quote
takair Posted November 26, 2016 Report Posted November 26, 2016 How old is it? If it is original, it may be a good excuse to change it out anyway. It is recommended that they be changed with each engine overhaul, but this does not seem to happen in practice. Quote
Bob_Belville Posted November 26, 2016 Report Posted November 26, 2016 Have you had the prop dynamically balanced? Vibration causes stuff to wear and get loose in the engine compartment, the panel, all over. 1 Quote
George Posted November 26, 2016 Author Report Posted November 26, 2016 Controls looks to be original and don't recall any mention of replacement in the logs. Prop was overhauled 2006 and has accumulated 500 hour since... no balance mentioned in the prop logs. I would like some new vernier controls especially for the mixture.. GHW Quote
Bob_Belville Posted November 26, 2016 Report Posted November 26, 2016 There are several threads here re replacing control cables. McFarlane makes the throttle, prop, and mixture controls and their website makes is pretty easy to acquire an "owner manufactured part" and the log entry info. You should discuss this with your A&P who will need to sign off on the installation. http://www.mcfarlaneaviation.com/Reference/default.aspx?ID=62517312&page=Content&Article=87 Quote
Browncbr1 Posted November 26, 2016 Report Posted November 26, 2016 Some people leave a rubber band on it and once setup in cruise, we wrap it around the knob and something else to keep it from turning. 1 Quote
MHemperly Posted November 27, 2016 Report Posted November 27, 2016 The McFarland ones are over priced in my opinion. You can order one from ACS, they are based out of Lake Havasu City AZ. You have to order it through Aircraft Spruce. They did mine last year. You send them your original one and they build it to that spec and your mechanic can sign it off as owner produced part. It's half the cost and works fine.... maybe even less then half, can't remember. Mike Quote

The ACSs were less than 20 years old and clearly inferior to the McFarlane though probably "good enough" if you're selling the plane soon. I did not price ACS after researching the difference. The McFarland throttle cable was under $300., the other 2 were a little more than that - prop and mixture are vernier. 1 Quote

GHW George (Hank?), where are you in NC? (FAA is still showing PFLUGERVILLE TX for N7164U.) There's now a MSC in NC @ KMRN. Lynn Mace does a lot of Mooney annuals. Very experienced and reasonable rates. http://www.aglaviation.com/about-us Quote
George Posted November 29, 2016 Author Report Posted November 29, 2016 Bob - I'm in Monroe EQY....That's great with a MSC in MRN...Was not sure where to go for annual....I need to head up your way and say hello to the both of you! I try and do as much maintenance as I can with the assistance of friend / A&P. Replaced some leaking valve cover gaskets and tires today. My right wheel has some small cracks...two on left half and one on right half less than 1/2" long and crack width maybe paper thick/wide. What might one suggest for finding new wheel assembly? GHW Talk to Lynn, I'm sure he can get you what you need re wheel. As I recall, Mooney wheels are generic, probably Cleveland? But he can tell you if it need to be replaced. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/600x6wheels.php Do come see us! I'm out at the airport this week, doing my annual and adding an external power receptacle. Quote
Hank Posted November 30, 2016 Report Posted November 30, 2016 Please don't confuse George "Hank" with his C in NC with George "Hank" with his C in AL. I'm also trying to keep us straight . . . Quote
eman1200 Posted November 30, 2016 Report Posted November 30, 2016 George, are you new to the area? Talk to DrBill, he's a local mooney owner and might have some tips of where to pick things up that you don't need a MSC for. Quote

Sadly, Bill is selling or has sold his Mooney though O don't think he's completely withdrawn from MS. But the MSC I referred him to will treat George and anyone else in out area right. Quote
