OK.  StratusESG is installed and the validation flight was completed today.  She passed with "flying" colors!

When you do the flight, make sure to check out the AOPA site for the flight profile.  There are some very specific things you have to do and the FAA gives precious, little information.  There is an A/C out there, but the AOPA site detailed it better.

Upon completion of the flight, just go on the FAA site and collect your report and code (if you pass.)

With the exception of the website being down this afternoon, I tried again this evening and it went right through.  $500 of taxpayer money inbound!

The total cost was:

StratusESG.... $2199.00 at Sarasota Avionics
Installation by my awesome shop in Rockford IL.... $2000.00
Rebate.... $500.00

Total cost.... $3700.00

Being able to see ALL traffic.... priceless!

The ESG is 1090ES not UAT.  So far, I love the setup!

2199 was a great price for the ESG, was that an Oshkosh deal?

Yes it was.  I couldn't believe they were selling them for that price!

Super! I wonder how these compare to the L3 Lynx ADSB in/out transponder.

The thing that drives me nuts is that both of these companies are providing WAAS GPS at affordable prices but you can't use it for IFR flight! What's the regulatory hurdle/roadblock? Is there some answer other than lobbyist's from Garmin protecting their cash cow? I can buy a lower quality GPS chip to put in a little robot for under $100.00 (I like to play with Arduino programing).

I'm sure we're being milked somehow and this cow wants to kick over the bucket!

Arduino is fun although I haven't messed with it for some time now. :(

Yea.  there is that.  I need a new transponder and I don't plan on WAAS approaches for quite some time.  In addition, I came away from KOSH this year with a feeling we are on the cusp of major avionics breakthroughs in terms of price.

I am happy to have to "OUT" capability since I fly in high traffic area quite often.
