Capt_CrashN_Burn Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 If one was to pick ap a G on the cheap, and add all the LoPresti and Lasar speed mods, along with the 200hp IO-360, could you approach the performance of a J model? Or are there basic differences in the airframe? Quote
carusoam Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 Cap'n crash... If the G were a gift, and you have a boat load of dough, sweat and patience....you could get there (or at least come pretty close) Welcome to the neighborhood.... -a- Quote
Lood Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 No, you won't. An E model will do better, simply because it's lighter. In the end, you're going to be stuck with an over capitalized airplane of which, no matter what mods it has, the value will still be determined as that of G model. In most cases, it would probably be better to just buy the J. Quote
rbridges Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 if you change to the 200 hp motor and add the 201 cowl and windshield, you'd be 99% there, but it would cost you a whole lot less to simply buy the J model. Quote
danb35 Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 If you change to the 200 HP engine and add the 201 cowl and windshield, you'd still have the gross weight and fuel capacity of the G, and you would have spent most of the cost (not most of the cost delta, most of the cost) of the 201 in the mods. FlyDave Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Maybe, if you "Pound it to fit, paint it to match, f*#k it & fly it!!!" But then again you might also "CrashN_Burn", Cap'n Quote

Cruiser Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 With today's prices why bother? There is a '77 J model on ASO for $59,900. Buy it and save money. Quote

N601RX Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 We only paid $34,500 for 67F with new bladders and new prop. The airframe was very clean, new gear doughnuts, with a high time engine. Quote

Capt_CrashN_Burn Posted November 14, 2010 Author Report Posted November 14, 2010 Quote: Lood I've been doing quite a lot of searching on the net for J models in the US spesifically. I'm thinking of maybe importing a J while the US $/ZAR exchange rate is not too shabby and my take is this. If you want a J that's in average or above condition with not too many hours on the airframe or engine and that has decent interior, paint and avionics, be prepared to pay between $80k - $100k. There certainly are some "bargains" out there, but I'm not interested in paying $60k for an old J and then spending another $30k odd to make it look like something. For instance, a J with KX170/5 radio's and a shabby original vinyl interior just don't do it for me. Likewise, there are F models up for sale for around $30 - $40k, but most of these are also very out dated in regards to just about everything. However, up your budget to the $50 - $60k mark and you can buy a pristine F. Many F's at least have a higher usefull load advantage over most J's and although I prefer the manual undercarriage and flaps and love my F, I wouldn't mind letting it go for a good J. There's just nothing that come's close to the J's effeciency. Quote
Lood Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Once again, you'll get close, but you won't get there all the way. I've read about modified F's (201 windshield & cowling) that actually does cruise at 150kts - give or take a little, but I'm not sure if they really reach the 160kt mark where many 201's cruise at.If I had to modify, I would choose to do it on a F rather than a G and I agree that the windshield and cowling would return the most in terms of speed increase, compared to all the other mods available. N201MKTurbo Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 I had a 67F for 19 years (N6319Q) before I bought my turbo 201. My F was basically stock, the only speed mod was a LASAR cowl clowsure. I got a big speed improvement by adjusting the rigging. It would true at 6500 feet at 155 KTS 70% power. My J goes slower!
