thinwing Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 I find it interesting that everybody wants WAAS , its not required , you will rarely do WAAS approaches , and there are 2000 dollar adsB solutions on the horizon that will have their own TSOd position source...... I dont know about that statement...It would only be true if never flew approaches...all my inst approaches in 2015 have been rnav gps !! Quote
thinwing Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 It's just ridiculous. Lets say I am flying back to ZPH IFR and its down to minimums for the GPS approach. Wouldn't I rather fly the approach into a towered field with much better approach lighting and services like Lakeland which is a hop and a skip away from ZPH? Flying ILS and VOR brings me into the larger airports where I feel safer. And nothing beats ILS for accuracy. We route GPS would be nice if it was inexpensive but it's not. Once I get my ticket I'll see how well my old school dual vor setup with ILS and ADF holds up. what ticket is that?? Quote
gsengle Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 This makes no sense. GPS approaches will replace some ILSs for cost reasons. Its the lighting etc that gets you the lowest minimums. And it's not just where you want to go, it's many more options in an emergency, many more alternates, etc etc Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
thinwing Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 If I was you I think I'd put an "INOP" sticker on your ADF just before the checkride ha ha you got that right!!!wait till the examiner asks for a ndb hold with a decent crosswind!!.....spagettii tracks Quote
gsengle Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 Also, WAAS GPS is rock solid compared to the ILS needles... Just safer in every way, no compromises for weird geometry like LDA approaches, etc. The IAF layout is very standard, making these easy to fly compared to having to work around ground based navaids... thinwing Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 (edited) The STC for the KT-74 listed a couple of WAAS GPS units that were approved as input to the KT-74 in addition to the Garmins. I would think that those would be much less expensive than the Garmin. they are ,about half maybe ,but the freeflight models I looked at only provided a wass corrected position source for the kt-74 ...they certainly didnt include the navigator ,moving map and navcom all in the same unit as 430w Edited October 29, 2015 by thinwing clarify Quote
irishpilot Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 I also shoot LPV approaches as my 530w auto cycles to the next portion of the approach. My recommendation is to fly a few LPV approaches and you will see that they are just as easy to fly as an ILS. Sent from my Galaxy S5 via Tapatalk 1 Quote
gsengle Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 They are easier... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
thinwing Posted October 30, 2015 Report Posted October 30, 2015 Absolutely easier...most are standard t layout so a LPG appr. is the same anywhere!!All you have to know is the name (identifier) of the airport...so shooting an LPG at Sacramento CA feels the same as flying cloud minneapolis mn.(rnav 02/rnav 10L) Quote
