I'm sorry if this has been covered, but my search results turned up mostly discussions of mount types and locations.

I have a few questions for GoPro users:

1) Do you have connectivity problems when the engine is running? My iPad loses its connection intermittently when the engine is running. I got some great footage of a go around and landing at Clearview Airpark (2W2) today, but the camera shut off right before take off. My only work around has been to start the camera before start up.  This leaves me with a lot of uninteresting taxi footage that needs to go "on the cutting room floor" so to speak. This leads me to my next question.

2) Does anyone have opinions about the best editing software.   I don't need a lot of effects. It might be nice to add music. Ease of use, simplicity and intuitiveness are my priorities.

Close all apps first and see if that helps. I use my I phone to get the position then manually turn the go pro on.

Use the go pro editor...I find that to be the easiest to edit and add music. Also use a neutral density filter to get rid of the prop.

Just having some fun in this video

GoPro's app stability is not the greatest. Like MooneyPTG, I close down everything but the app. Sometimes, I reboot the Apple device just to clear the cache.

As for editors, I have been happy with iMovie. I also downloaded an App called "Capture" that allows you to take a video you recorded with your iPhone and add music before uploading it to YouTube.

I had mentioned this problem in an earlier thread before. I also moved the mount to the top side of the wing but near the wing tips. Hasn't helped much. I can maintain connectivity while idling, but lose it on take off and never comes back. For short flights, I do what you do, start recording manually and turn off wifi. This helps to save some battery power as well. Some times I resort to time lapse videos since the file sizes are a bit more compact but I really am losing out on good video and is frustrating. Some phones/tablets have better connectivity than others. I may try again this summer by trying different arrangements and phone/tablet combinations.

I use the GoPro Studio software. I am no video editing expert but I am getting by. The key is a powerful machine since video editing is really CPU intensive. I am also looking for a decent program on a Mac that does not require a PhD to learn how to use does not cost an AMU!

Thanks guys!  The biggest issue with the manual start and stop is not that I mind cutting the extra footage...it's that I have to download all of upload all of the footage before I can cut it.   I uploaded a 3.7GB file of the camera and ended up with about 760MB of finished footage.  That is way to much time spent transferring trash.

You really shouldn't be focusing on your GoPro when flying! It's an unncessary distraction. The safest way to operate a GoPro is to set and forget. ie. start recording before you even start up the plane and finish recording only when the engine shuts. There have been an increasing number of incidents related to camera use accoridng to NTSB.

What I have found was that the GoPro app sometimes will interfere with the operation and crashing my GoPro (especially GoPro 3 or older). The only way to revive it was to take the battery out and reboot it - a tad bit dificult when it's hanging outside under the wing with a GS of 150knot. With 32GB of SD card plus a battery bacpac means my GoPro can record almost 3 hours of flying in one go. So unless it's an extraordinarily long boring flight, I just leave it recording all the way.

The program I use the Adobe Premiere Pro - the latest version has GoPro lens adjustment preset to correct the distortion

I'm in the set it and forget it camp. I find having the wifi on seems to drain more battery than I save by turning it on and off.

I use iMovie on the Mac for editing. It's free for Mac users and is pretty easy to use.

Thanks folks. To be clear, this is not about having another distraction in flight, although I think I could safely manage turning a camera on and off. This is about having to transfer 2.2GBs of useless footage prior to take off and after landing. I have to transfer it to edit it out.

Quick question, how are you transferring the footage to your Mac? If you're attaching the camera to the Mac it's SLOW. If you pull the card and insert it directly into the SD slot on the side of the Mac it's MUCH faster.

Also just copy the files directly from the card to the Mac. Don't use the app to "import" the files until they are already transferred to your Mac.

And how do you propose not to have these useless 2.2GB footages?

Go to setting, turn on wifi, try to find your gopro, tap to connect, wait for it to connect, exit setting, find your gopro app, tap connect and control, tap powe on, wait for it to connect, and wait for preview to come on to make sure it is connected, if not, go back to step one, then tap record...

Right before you take off?

You do realise that it takes only 10 seconds to clip a MP4 video in Quick Time (Trim function)? And in this day and age when 2TB hard drive costs less than $100... I much rather not have GoPro on my take off / after landi check list...

I do both of the things that you mentioned. However, so far, most of my raw files are in the 7GB range. I don't care how you transfer it, that takes some time. When I'm done editing, maybe a tenth of the footage is worth watching under the set it and forget it method. Seems quite inefficient. The only work around I can see is being able to reliably stop and start the camera and that certainly ain't happening with the iPad. I've not really tried using the remote that came with the camera. Anyone having better luck using that?

When the engine is running, my connectivity to the camera when mounted external is spotty at best.

Are you suggesting that you can edit footage on the camera prior to transfer with QT? I have no issues with space or editing on my computer. I don't care for the time it takes to transfer footage I'm going to immediately trash.
