jetdriven Posted March 25, 2015 Report Posted March 25, 2015 ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425851948.537496.jpg Above is the number 1 cylinder, notice how the vertical baffle is about 1" shorter....it's worth about 30f lower cht ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425852035.412137.jpg Above look all the way back #4 and notice how the cylinder baffle is bent up about 3/4" to steel some air from the oil cooler. Oil cooler gets plenty of air. Worth 30f cooler. I just took that ramp baffle off. The oil temp still runs less than half scale even with half of it taped over. Quote
Yooper Rocketman Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 I wrapped up a crazy week yeasterday by signing a purchase agreement on a 1981 M20J. My first time flying a constant speed prop since just a few years after this plane was built! It's original everything. Paint, interior, and avionics. (read no GPS) I'd be interested in flying tips, starting tips, power settings (flatlander), and general words of encouragment! My 2 partners and I only opened our eyes to the Mooney 201 a week & a half ago so we're all Mooney virgins. Thanks in advance! Dave I get into ARB a lot, but unfortunately it's doing medical flights with our organizations bird, not my Mooney. I would like to see your plane when you get it based there, if it works for both of us. I would be coming in with a BE36T (N7256A), but my favorite plane (well, that is flying right now) is the Mooney. Tom Based U.P of MI Quote
Bob - S50 Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 Hopefully you have gotten over the tendency to flare at 30 feet doing 130 knots Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Yep. I'm down to 20 feet and 120 knots. Bob 1 Quote
dtoelke Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 I appreciate all the info! A little background on us. We are all Airbus or Boeing pilots. I just sold my 172 2 weeks ago. It was the airplane I soloed in back in 1976, but it was time to let her go and move up to something that goes nearly twice as fast for the same gas. The plane will be going through a LASAR annual, and it's going to be a whopper! (but we bought it knowing that) We'll then be bringing her back to MI. One of the first upgrades I want to do is the GAMI injectors and EDM-730 (or maybe 830), to really get the efficiency maxed out. Any other J owners done this? If you go JPI I'd highly recommend the 830. The price difference is very marginal (it's actually cheaper if you plan to get the FF option for the 730 believe it or not!) but the GUI is far superior. As an engineer, I really cannot understand how anybody can feel confident flying a plane without an engine monitor. I realize part of this is cost-related, but in a lot of cases these systems end up saving pilots a HUGE amount of money in the not so long run. Only a couple weeks after I'd had my 231 I was able to detect and quickly fix a plugged injector on #4. Without the engine monitor I would have been ignorant of the issue and probably burned up the cylinder. Saving 3 GPH running LOP I'm going to save almost $2,000/yr for every 100 hrs flown. Depending on how much you fly this pays off in 1-2 years. On top of that factor in pilot/passenger safety and an engine monitor becomes more of a necessity than an option. Quote
NotarPilot Posted April 8, 2015 Report Posted April 8, 2015 This is for the Airbus drivers but one thing you'll appreciate about ANY Mooney is that it does not call you a "retard" right before you flare like those bigger planes do. 1 Quote
capthaak Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 I won't need to ask "why is it doing that" either! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
