Danb Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 I was ready to take off for Va and during my run up the left mag failed miserably nothing I could do resolved the issue, had to make a quick decision I hope it's a bad spark plug and jumped in my truck and drove round trip for the better part of 11-12 hours..baby 'Cruzer' is fine. My no. One cylinder on run up the was about 150 degrees hotter. I'm clueless bring a CPA not a mechanic. Hopefully it's not a big deal since it was only on left mag and one cylinder? The 3 lb. Yorkie decided I wasn't sleeping last night so I doubt I'll get to the airport to check the plane out... Quote
Marauder Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Dan - bummer. Does the G1000 provide engine monitoring downloads for evaluation? That was the biggest benefit I found when I purchased an engine analyzer that could allow me to show it to someone. Quote
bonal Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Let's see a photo of your new pup Cruzer Quote
Tommy Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 When you said failed miserably what symptoms / engine monitor reading (especially EGT) were you getting on mag check? Quote
Danb Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 On left mag check ran extremely rough, cyl One temp went up when on the left mag Quote
Danb Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 Bonal. I'm a clutz I took a pic but do not know how to get it here Quote
Danb Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 Cruzer can't wait to sleep. 600 mile drive she decided to keep me up most of night Quote
bonal Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 My wife says Cruzer is a cute girl hope you solve your mag problem so you can take her flying soon Quote
Tommy Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 If it is only one cyclinder then it's most likely a spark plug problem. The engine will run rough and the EGT will drop in that particular cyclinder. The solution - either to take the plug out and clean it or try ground running your mixture very lean for a while to un-foul the plug! Quote
Danb Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 Tommy is was only one cylinder it ran rough but the egt went up then I left it run rough for a few seconds and in then dropped? Quote
ryoder Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 I would pull the bottom plugs on that mag and you will probably see the problem. My fine wire got oil soaked and was dead on the tester. Had to clean it up and no problems since, Quote
Marauder Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 Tommy is was only one cylinder it ran rough but the egt went up then I left it run rough for a few seconds and in then dropped? Dan - if it is just the EGT that went up on one mag and one cylinder, it probably is just a fouled plug. Run it on both mags, run the RPM up to the run up range and lean it aggressively for 30 seconds. Then enriched the mixture with the RPM up and do the mag check again. If it is the cylinder head temperature going up, you got something else going on. Quote
Danb Posted March 3, 2015 Author Report Posted March 3, 2015 Thanx Chris no I did not notice any change except in the egt temp. Quote
Hector Posted March 4, 2015 Report Posted March 4, 2015 Wow......I was in exactly the same boat this last Sunday. Had planned to fly to Pensacola to pick up my new pup, but low IFR with fog put a stop to that. 10 hour round trip by car was tiring but well worth it. 2 Quote

Hector Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 I'm hoping she will be my flying buddy some day. Likes to lay on cool surfaces 1 Quote
Danb Posted March 5, 2015 Author Report Posted March 5, 2015 Hector good luck with him / her Dan Quote
fantom Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Hector....guessing about a 3 month old beautiful lab? Quote
RobertE Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 If you're saying you actually drove to pick her up rather than fly I bet that proves a wise decision. We picked up a pup via air years ago and I think she associated all the bad things (leaving a place she knew, plus mom and all her brothers and sisters) with aviation. Thereafter she started shaking within sight of the airplane. Our latest pup we picked up by car and he has become an enthusiastic flyer. 1 Quote

Thereafter she started shaking within sight of the airplane. Our latest pup we picked up by car and he has become an enthusiastic flyer. Interesting. I guess that is a possible outcome. She is 7 weeks old and made the trip very well. Playing most of the time. Cried for around 10 minutes when going to bed at night for the first couple of nights. Now she is so tired after playing with the kids all evening she is actually crashing by 10pm. It's like having a baby though, requires constant attention because she gets into everything!! Very smart, she's already learning to do her business outside. Quote
