I have seen some sites where the chat feature in a side pane so that people can use it while browsing the forums or other pages. It could be because I'm younger, or sit on Bloomberg half of my day, but I like the chat feature and it seems underused. If it's overly technically complicated, or there is zero demand for it I understand, but I certainly wouldn't mind making small talk with people once in a while that doesn't warrant a post.
