Mooney announced that they'd acquired, possibly commissioned might be a better word, 3 Redbird FMX units.  The sims are said to feature a fully enclosed cockpit and full Mooney branding.  They expect to use the simulators as sales and training tools.

I've never "flown" one of the full motion Redbird units, but I'd like to give this one a shot.

There is a Redbird sim at Scottsdale (AZ) airport...Aerodyne Flight Center.  It's pretty cool although definitely rudimentary and some motions are a tad bit jerky.  The Redbird uses cockpit templates over screens to simulate various airplane panels.  I generally fly the Garmin G1000 Cirrus to simulate the Mooney...it is good practice for approaches and, with an instructor, those approaches count towards the 6-6-6 rule.

I have seen the Redbird sims at their facility in San Marcos, TX. They are not quite as nifty as the full motion sims at Simuflite (which I have flown), but they are far superior to our home versions, and appear to be affordable for flight schools etc.

I have several hours in Redbirds. They have a letter from the FAA authorizing the 6-6 approaches to be logable SOLO

in the sim. Logable just like doing IMC approaches solo for real. I've seen it. Ask for it at the sim. It should be in their sim install package of papers.

Any idea on the hourly price to fly the sim solo to obtain the 6-6 currency?

I pictured getting some practice on challenging approaches that are just not near my home in something as close to a long body Mooney with aging instrumentation.

Just wondering,

We have an outfit here that is somehow tied in with Continental ( Zulu Flight Training). They have the FMX Redbird in their facility as well, and I think it is something like $65/hr. It is really an amazing product. From what I understand, Mooney is designing a program for the simulator that emulates the Acclaim and the Ovation. I'm not sure if other models are being designed as well, but from what I'm being told, the instrumentation and panel lay out will be identical to your favorite Speedster.  Can't wait to see this develop, definitely going to be something amazing to behold.
