Andy95W Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 I replaced #3 and 4 bottoms first with fine wires (most often lead fouled), then #1 and 2 bottoms. No more lead fouling! To keep costs down, and to have less to justify to the financial officer, I'll probably do 1-2 at a time until all are fine wire Tempests. Quote
rockydoc Posted October 3, 2014 Author Report Posted October 3, 2014 Finally installed 8 Tempest fine wires. Am anxious to see if I can see an objective performance difference. Quote

The-sky-captain Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 I ran my first real flight today with the new fine wires. 1.4 hours LOP and the difference is amazing. That said my massives had a lot of hours on them, but the fine wires were very smooth and I was able to get further LOP while staying smooth. 2 Quote
rockydoc Posted October 26, 2014 Author Report Posted October 26, 2014 Since installing my 8 new Tempest fine wires, I have flown about 15 hours to include about 10 TO's. Can't say enough good things about the performance. Being a person who thrives on objective data, I'm afraid I have none to justify my feelings, but, my bird literally "jumps off of the runway" now. If she did before, I don't remember it. Her performance amazes me. I would unconditionally recommend these plugs to anyone. To heck with the cost. What does the cost really matter to any of us anyway, eh? I am truly amazed. Rocky Quote
47U Posted October 26, 2014 Report Posted October 26, 2014 "To heck with the cost. What does the cost really matter to any of us anyway, eh?" I can probably get away with using that line the next time I need plugs... but when I brief my controller on my plan to upgrade my 35 year old Narco stack to Garmin, I'm going to need something more creative. Back to topic, even the Tempest massives are a big improvement from what was installed previously. Quote
stevesm20b Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 I installed the Tempest UREM-37BYs and found they are much better than the standard massive plugs. I think the extended tip keeps the electrode on the bottom plugs further from the oil and are much more resistant to fouling. On the standard massive plugs, the piston pushes any oil on the bottom of the cylinder right into the electrode of the plug. On the BY plugs the extended tip keeps the electrode higher up from the bottom or further into the cylinder. Anyway, my engine runs better and does not foul out when I do a mag check during the run up. Plus they are a lot cheaper that the fine wire plugs. 1 Quote
MB65E Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Great Steve!! Glad you like them. They still run great on mine. I like them better than the fine wires at a fraction of the cost! -Matt 1 Quote
