quik flite Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I am going to buy an ipad mini for mounting on the yoke , just VFR use, what do you recommend ? I need everything , I want a separate GPS, anybody use a Bad Elf GPS . I heard they are good.. Can I buy everything in one place, Where do you recommend ? Thanks. Quote
Marauder Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 The mount you need will require whether you plan on using a shell with the Mini or not. Before I bought the GDL-39, I was using a XGPS150. The Bad Elf will consume some of the Mini's power, so you should probably get some feedback from those that own one. I will dig up the numbers for you on the yoke and suction mounts. Sent using Tapatalk Quote
ncdmtb Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I bought a XGPS150, but I never use it. I find the built in GPS of mini to work just fine. I have a Ram Mount yoke holder, but currently I still have my Garmin Aera 550 on yoke mount and I use the mini as a hand held. I am thinking about retiring the Garmin and just use the mini as a yoke , mount. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Marauder Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Ok, updated: This is a Ram EZ-ROLL'R mount for a full size iPad. It is designed to use the iPad without any protective cover on it. Part number for one that fits the new iPad Mini is RAM-HOL-AP14U: This is a complete suction mount setup for the iPad Mini with the mount I showed above: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-apple-ipad-mini-suction-mount-ram-b-166-ap14u.html This is a complete yoke mount setup for the iPad Mini using the mount I showed above: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-apple-ipad-mini-clamp-mount-ram-b-121-ap14u.html This is a Ram mount for a Mini with Retina that will accommodate an iPad Mini with or without a protective shell: This is the part number by itself: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-apple-ipad-mini-tab-tite-tablet-cradle-ram-hol-tab12u.html This is the part number for a complete suction mount using this Ram mount: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-tab-tite-12-ipad-mini-suction-cup-mount-ram-b-166-tab12u.html If I remember correctly, they didn't sell the complete yoke mount version of this and you needed to buy the cradle separately. This is a Ram yoke mount close up: Depending how you want to go, there are a number of different configurations that you can use. In my plane, I have an iPad Mini yoke mounted using the EZ-ROLL'R mounting plate and I have my iPad Air mounted in a suction mount on the passenger side. The nice thing about the Ram setup is the interchangeability of the components. I have bought add-ons over the past year because I either added or removed covers for the iPads or I wanted to mount things in a different place. Quote

quik flite Posted February 2, 2014 Author Report Posted February 2, 2014 Thanks for the info , my job is easier with all the help. Anybody else just use the I pad, built in GPS ? Quote
bnicolette Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 Thanks for the info , my job is easier with all the help. Anybody else just use the I pad, built in GPS ? I use mine in conjunction with a Stratus 2. However, I will vouch for the effectiveness and reliability of the built in GPS of the iPad mini. It even works through heated windshields with no problem to an accuracy of 5m. Pretty darn good. Quote

Epiphyte Posted February 2, 2014 Report Posted February 2, 2014 I use both the pin dock elf and the bad elf pro. They both work really well for signal,, but I would recommend the pro version, even though it costs a little more. The cheaper model that plugs into the iPad will get knocked loose really easily and you loose signal. Mine also stopped working after a few months and I got a replacement from the company at no cost. Go with the pro version. It works off its own batteries, can plug into cig lighter and is stand alone or worn around neck on a lanyard. It connects via Bluetooth to iPad, very quickly. Quote
MB65E Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 Hanger neighbor had a really slick spring loaded (scissor mount?) if you will. Primary mount was a ram mount but the contraption that held the mini allowed access to what ever you needed on the mini. It was nice, light , and efficient looking. 4 little rubber prongs that grabbed the IPad. I'll try and see what it was! -Matt Quote

BorealOne Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Check out the Delorme inReach for an external gps source that also provides 2 way messaging anywhere, tracking and SOS/SAR alerting for an additional subscription fee. Works great and I'd highly recommend it as a companion to the iPad mini. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
