aaronk25 Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I'm getting ready for my trip to Mexico which I leave on the 19th for and return on the 7th of March. As I posted before were getting married in playa del carmen (the royal on the 26th) so there is going to be some ocean crossing. With that I don't currently have a raft but have been trying to see if anyone has one I can rent for a couple hundred bucks, plus I'd pay the shipping both ways? If I can't find one to borrow I'll probably buy, but not sure exactly what is needed. Was looking at something like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=revere+life+raft&oq=revere+life+raft&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l3.8522j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=revere+life+raft&tbm=shop&spd=11909634607499866217 but for a Gulf only crossing I really don't know if a canopy is necessary as I would think with all the cruise ships and oil wells that we wouldn't be floating around for days waiting for rescue if the prop stops....I have a 406mhz, and a plb but not sure how long it would take to be rescued. Do I need more raft or less raft? I see a basic 2 person is $975 with no canopy. I'd love to rent one but have a hard time justifying $20-$25 a day that the websites suggest is the going rate. I figured if I could pay $200 I'd rent it so if you have one that fits the mission not being used it would be a good opportunity to have it make some money if it could be parted with for a short period of time. If not I'll buy because it would be nice to have, but for the very few times I would need it, not sure it makes sense. Thanks! Aaron Quote

Piloto Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 To expedite rescue is a good idea to carry a handheld Marine VHF radio. The pilot at a cruise ship is not always looking in your direction even if you see the passing by ship. Any raft is hard to see from a boat at three miles. But with the Marine radio you can reach boats at 50nm from the air and at the surface over 10nm. Boats do not have 406MHz PLB receivers José Quote

A call on channel 16 will definitely get some attention. Thanks! Quote
DrBill Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Most points of entry have an FBO that will rent rafts. BILL Quote

yvesg Posted February 23, 2014 Report Posted February 23, 2014 The graph shows he dropped from 19K to 16K or so. He was doing only 130 knots up there... I think he encountered bad headwinds. Lets hope all is fine. Yves Quote

1964-M20E Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Well he had some pretty nasty weather to depart in from NEW. Overcast, rain and some heavy showers. I think it was better the further south he went though. Good luck and have a great time. If I had known he was departing form NEW yesterday I’d gone over to see him off. Quote
