PTK Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Wanted to get some opinions on various shops people use around the country for 500 hr magneto inspection and their experiences. Are there shops that are better than others? Any input is greatly appreciated!
BigTex Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 There's two that are pretty much at the top of the list. One is Select Aircraft Services in Lancaster, Texas. The other is Aircraft Magneto Service in Bainbridge Island, WA. I used Select Aircraft Services and Aaron Williams is top notch. You will not find anyone better. Other folks really like Aircraft Magneto Service. Don Maxwell uses Select Aircraft Services and Mike Busch uses Aircraft Magneto Service. Can't go wrong with either choice. 1
PTK Posted January 14, 2014 Author Report Posted January 14, 2014 I spoke with Cliff of Aircraft Magneto Service and he indicated they don't work on the dual mag because parts issue. He indicated that PMA parts are available and Kelly Aerospace will do an OH exchange. I haven't called anyone else yet.
KSMooniac Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Aaron @ Select is the best for the dual mag. I'm about to send him my mag and starter for my engine overhaul sequence. 1
bnicolette Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Doc I also used Aaron @ Select in Lancaster, TX. Very smooth and predictable service. Will definitely use again. 1
PTK Posted January 15, 2014 Author Report Posted January 15, 2014 Thank you Gary, Scott and Brett. Looks like Aaron at Select is going to be my choice as well. He also was the most reasonable for the 500 hour. Did you guys have the plastic gears replaced as part of the 500 hour as a precaution even though they may not have severely discolored? They are a couple hundred dollars a piece those gears!
DrBill Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Roughly what does Aaron charge per mag for single mag inspection ? I'm due in July. BILL
FoxMike Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 PTK, Colorado is a long way from NJ but if you want to get a good inspection try Crossfire Magneto Service (970) 672 6505. Located in Loveland, CO at FNL.
PTK Posted January 15, 2014 Author Report Posted January 15, 2014 When I spoke with him on the phone Aaron said around 800$. Please don't hold him or me to it! He was the most reasonable. Others were at 1000$ or more.
PTK Posted January 15, 2014 Author Report Posted January 15, 2014 Thank you FoxMike! Colorado has a very special place in my wife's and in my heart! We took our twin boys when they were 6 on their first skiing trip to Breckenridge. We absolutely loved it! We're coming back next month!
bnicolette Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 I believe mine was around $850. Not sure about the gears??
BigTex Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 I had mine IRAN'ed... The charge was around $650 per mag.
carusoam Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 What are the plastic gears replaced with? A metal such as aluminum or brass? Ozone is a powerful oxidizer. Usually nylon will turn brownish with oxidation and get brittle. Nylon gears in GM headlight systems (corvette and firebird) are known for becoming brittle and losing teeth under torque, They don't show much age when they fail. I would be inclined to swap out the plastic gears with metal if the failure mode of the gear leads to failure of both magnetos. If they are two separate magnetos, a complete failure of both would be remote. If one fails, the other won't be far behind... Sorry to mix cars and Mooneys, -a-
jetdriven Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Thank you Gary, Scott and Brett. Looks like Aaron at Select is going to be my choice as well. He also was the most reasonable for the 500 hour. Did you guys have the plastic gears replaced as part of the 500 hour as a precaution even though they may not have severely discolored? They are a couple hundred dollars a piece those gears! I think they change those on condition. I think the only difference between an OH magento and a 500hr inspection is the replacement of the magneto bearings. They can look at everything in the mag, decide its good, change the shaft bearings, and call it overhauled. FWIW we had 4 Slick magneto coils in our shop that failed in the past 6 weeks. So I am a Bendix man. 1
