  2. Hey all, I saved the capital...then waited a several more months to have 2x what I think it’s going to cost to buy a Pre-J Mooney. Ha! I’m ready to start conducting some Prebuys and putting in some offers. I want to be ahead of the ball here and see if I can start building a relationship with an AP/IA mechanic that is very familiar with Vintage Mooneys. Does anyone have a line to a mechanic in SoCal? (I’m based at John Wayne KSNA) Do you know if they do local prebuy inspections? Also are there a short body Mooney prebuy inspection checklists that people use for reference? Any other tips or pitfalls on prebuys and acquisition? I’m clearly new to this. -Trent
  3. I used to fly a FG Cardinal. It was a wonderful aircraft but slow as a Yugo. The RG Cardinals are pretty sleek and will match the vintage Mooneys’ speed. I found this nice example on Controller. Asking and selling prices often vary however I feel like the C brand commands a higher price than our Mooneys for similar performance. Looking at this fine specimen gets me excited but then I think about the Mooney I could have for the same outlay and for me Mooney wins. Why is it that Mooney’s are such a fantastic value? and since they are, and there are fewer of them, why doesn’t that drive the values up? https://www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/184024203/1973-cessna-177rg
  4. Dear Fellow Aviators and Mooney Fans, Hope you are all having a great day! I have been dreaming about owning a Mooney / Vans type of fast GA aircraft since I first saw them at an airshow when I was a CAP cadet back in the 90s. I just moved back to the states from an overseas assignment, I am working on my PPL, have about 55 hours in C152's. I also have a jet maintenance background from the USAF and a large defence contractor. I currently work as a Tech Rep for a military jet and am looking to get my A&P this year. I am currently in middle/south Georgia. I am originally from Washington state. I have a house back in WA that should sell in the next few months freeing up some cash to buy a Mooney. I will have a budget around $30-$35k. So here are my questions and things I am looking for: 1. Recomendations for A&P's near middle Georgia with Mooney experience that could help with pre-purchase inspections. 2. Any Vintage Mooney airplanes for sale or brokers that sell them you could trust in my area. 3. Anyone with a Mooney near my area that would be willing to take me up and feel a Mooney to see if it's what I truly want (I would pay for some fuel etc)..? 4. Any pointers to existing resources in a Mooney buying search on a budget. Thank you very much for any links, help advice in advance. Best regards, --- Motorcycle and Aviation Enthusiast, Student Pilot, Mil Jet Tech Rep
  5. In addition to having aviation embedded in my blood, I have been blessed (or cursed) to be a car enthusiast as well. BAT is an auction site that I frequent that has some outstanding examples of exotics, classics, collectibles and plane dogs. Today I was surprised to find an Aeronca Chief on the block out of Georgia. They auctioned a Champ last May which sold for $18,000. Thought some of you might enjoy taking a look at the site. I apologize in advance if you spend your avionics upgrade fund on a classic Ferrari. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1939-aeronca-chief-65-la/
  6. The dome light switch in our '67C is the type that you rotate between thumb and forefinger to turn the light on/off. As you rotate it about 1/2 turn it clicks. As shown in the photo, the switch is too short. It does not protrude beyond the fixture so is impossible to use. I took the fixture off yesterday for a look, and the tip of the switch shaft is rounded and smooth, as if it were made that way. Now I know that this cannot be the case. The shaft seems to be made of plastic, and is about 1/4" dia. Has anyone (1) had this problem and (2) come up with an elegant fix? Of course, I would like to extend the shaft 1/2 and make it a target for a passenger to hit their head on Other options will be considered. Please no hijacking this thread to discuss Star Trek "Force Fieldz" and "Tractor Beamz".
  7. My airspeed indicator leaks at the face plate and is kind of expensive to repair. Anyone have one on the shelf. Mine is ok for VFR flight but not IFR. P/N AW-23/4-20-B US Gauge Co. Thanks for checking Ron
  8. Changing the Oil in Your Mooney.pptx View File After emailing this to several people, I decided to add it here as a general reference. This is how to change the oil on a vintage Mooney with side cheeks; it is demonstrated on an M20-C with rear-mounted oil filter and includes photos of the process and the long, narrow piece of sheet metal that I slide under the filter to catch drips. No messy wad of paper towels here! Submitter Hank Submitted 03/09/2017 Category Safety & Techniques

  10. Flying under the Cleveland Bravo today I encountered an interesting problem. Keeping the airspeed out of the yellow (because of the turbulence) was really difficult if I wanted to keep the engine happy, especially in the descent. Power settings low enough to keep the airplane out of the yellow put the engine out of the green. Definitely a first world problem.
  11. I also just bought a '66E model Two similar topics at the same time... My name is Olivier Rouchard from France and I also purchased a '66E model with a few mods. I've been flying for the past two months with it, putting on 82 hours in 8 weeks (and just starting). She certainly doesn't feel like a 47 years old lady. She certainly is different than my daily Airbus 320 and this is what makes her so charming to fly. I take it back; in reality she is not that different from my airliner ;-) Here are a few pictures and I hope to enjoy this bird for a very long time. I live in Strasbourg, France (on the eastern part of France, on the German border) and I would be glade to get in touch with fellow Mooney travelers in the area. Cheers, Olivier
