HELP another STEC 30 altitude hold oscillation thread
Marauder replied to DXB's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Dev - make sure there is no water in the static system. There is a pressure switch somewhere in the system used for the STEC altitude hold. Check to make sure there is no leaks there and more importantly no signs of water in the line leading to it. The gizmo is about 1.5” round and an inch thick. It will have a static line going to it. I would replace that before I messed with replacing servos. Also, these servos have a maintenance routine that may need to be conducted. It’s some sort of exercise routine. Paul (user handles is something like kortespate)I think once described it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -
This topic reminds me of a conversation about the origin of existence. If you try to imagine "nothingness" which is defined by the absence of life, the planets, the galaxies, black holes, everything, the emptiness of what is left is still something, it is nothing. Wrap your head around that one.

I think Brad is referring to the fact the CFI is responsible to ensure the student is capable of solo flight per the regulation and has authorized the solo flights. Not sure how often, if at all, the FAA goes after an instructor in situations like this. But I suspect it can be part of the investigation to speak to the CFI. 61.87 (n)Limitations on student pilots operating an aircraft in solo flight. A student pilot may not operate an aircraft in solo flight unless that student pilot has received an endorsement in the student's logbook for the specific make and model aircraft to be flown by an authorized instructor who gave the training within the 90 days preceding the date of the flight. (o)Limitations on student pilots operating an aircraft in solo flight at night. A student pilot may not operate an aircraft in solo flight at night unless that student pilot has received: (1)Flight training at night on night flying procedures that includes takeoffs, approaches, landings, and go-arounds at night at the airport where the solo flight will be conducted; (2) Navigation training at night in the vicinity of the airport where the solo flight will be conducted; and (3) An endorsement in the student's logbook for the specific make and model aircraft to be flown for night solo flight by an authorized instructor who gave the training within the 90-day period preceding the date of the flight. (p)Limitations on flight instructors authorizing solo flight. No instructor may authorize a student pilot to perform a solo flight unless that instructor has - (1) Given that student pilot training in the make and model of aircraft or a similar make and model of aircraft in which the solo flight is to be flown; (2) Determined the student pilot is proficient in the maneuvers and procedures prescribed in this section; (3) Determined the student pilot is proficient in the make and model of aircraft to be flown; and (4) Endorsed the student pilot's logbook for the specific make and model aircraft to be flown, and that endorsement remains current for solo flight privileges, provided an authorized instructor updates the student's logbook every 90 days thereafter.

Yes you did. You achieved nothing.

I was watching you on TIS-B. You were cooking. Chris in his J was down at 3000' and he was showing high 150s and I was at 5500' and doing around 165 ground speed. I think you might have a little more tailwind than me since you were flying a tad bit more easterly. -
I'll add one comment on the JPI 900. Prior to the last repair in which a new display was installed, the JPI 900 display had a matte finish. The new JPI 900 display is very shiny and I think I would have a hard time seeing it from the right side. I will be exploring an anti-glare covering for it.

I was staying ahead of the twin Comanche but not by much. I did pass our buddy in the Piper Cherokee 140 on the way back. Poor guy, I think everyone passed him on the way down and back. And to add a really big insult, Dan in his Bravo on his way down left 20 minutes after he did and still landed before him. -
And let's say he was licensed as VFR pilot. Heck, let's even give him an IFR rating as well. When one of our own who lives there says "Well I live a mile from the west entrance to Mt Diablo, driving around here Friday night was terrible winds, downpours low ceilings ugh. IFR would have been a challenge. Way below my minimums". I guess it was just bad luck. Stick to instructing, your reasonable doubts skills are a bit soft.

He says de Bar lived life to the extreme; he was a skydiver and motorcycle racer, and a few months ago, he decided to get his pilot’s license. Schriber has been a pilot for years.

That's funny! What's even funnier is he spent the whole time talking with YOUR wife! -
A little over 3 months experience...
-
Maybe that is his father's definition of a "pilot's license". His friend who he is shown flying in the plane with the pilot said "“He was still under student status. Flying a high performance airplane, things happen so much faster,” said Schriber.

I had to look it up! And I work with lawyers all the time in the work I do.

And your point is? Posted on Saturday, edit on Sunday at 12:38 AM to include the airport location. Edited a little later to show 5 were coming (Jack, Chris, Marauder, Marauder's wife and Don). Later Dan added he was coming. No Brian! Just the entire Quakertown PA population! We will plan a better location next time. Wasn't expecting 14 people when I said "a few of us will be heading..." Good thing more didn't show up. We would have starved to death for real. -
I'm not disassociating myself. I'm irritated that someone lost their life in a senseless way.
-
There will be an investigation. And just like Patrick's death, there will be a conclusion. And that conclusion won't be far off from what those of us who have been flying for decades already are surmising. Why would a student pilot since October, be flying at night, in a complex aircraft that he bought a few weeks ago, in bad weather towards a mountain? And let's not forget that a 30 year friend of the guy described him as a "psycho nut". And his father was quoted as saying "Did everything. Everything he could think of, everything he wanted to do anyway. I would say probably wasn't afraid of dying. He was afraid of not living". I feel bad he died. I feel worse for his family.

Yeah, we missed the smell of Jet-A. It actually turned out a lot larger than expected. It was just the 3 of us getting together until I invited Brian who then in turn invited Quakertown, PA. Unfortunately they were packed solid with people and had to put us in a separate room. My wife noted the serving sizes were a bit smaller than our last meal here. The food was great, the service was slow. I asked if they took reservations and they said they didn't. Too bad. Could be a nice location with a larger group. -
And how do you expect this to turn out? Mount Diablo moved after he took off? That the clouds and low visibility that were reported weren't there? Come on. We have seen this over and over again. What we do is risky and if you don't have a healthy respect for that risk, this stuff happens.

I went through a 141 school. I needed to have a conversation with an instructor before I could fly solo before every flight.

Scott - how much information is supposed to be reported on a MOS for an airport that has no weather reporting? Below is the MOS for my home airport. Is this supposed to be a composite of nearby weather reporting stations extrapolated for my airport? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
