  2. I recently installed a G 1 Insight in my old Mooney with EGT and CHT simultaneaous dispayed in two overlayed colums plus the numbers in white (EGT) and green CHT displayed below each column. Overall I am quite satisfied with it, but i should have taken the 3 1/8 and not the smaller size. What i I like about it is that the CHT column turns yellow over 400 F. That is a nice feature for takeoff which gets my attention faster than only numbers. The highly touted leaning feature is not so usefull as my engine starts to run rough at peak, so LOP is out of the question. However, seing the temperatures on all cylinders is quite reassuring. Also, now that I see how much the hottest cylinder changes, I really wonder what I did before with just one EGT gauge and the factory installed CHT. Currently I am trying to teach myself to pay less attention to the EGT and rely more on the CHT ( around 380 on 2 and 4), as my grlfriend and Co-pilot rightly complained that I fiddeled toomuch with the mixture after installation of the Insight.
  3. My two cents are with 231flyer. Could be that as a German I remember what happened to Zuendapp when the Chinese bought it. While it would be nice to get affordable spare parts (Mc Farlane beats Mooney by 75 USD to 425 USD for the same control cable), I am afraid that Mooneys will just join the ranks of other orphan aircraft. However, after looking at the list provided by 231 flyer, I will need an extra beer tonight. That does not bode well for the future of US manufacturing. Cheers

  6. Hi Brian, my 63 Mooney would benefit from better panels than she currently has, as well as a headliner (eventhough I am not sure you intend to get rid of it), and I am sure she qualifies as a good home. I will gladly pay for shipping and handling. Cheers Norbert

  8. Hi Alan, I have a 20C (#2307), the interior (specially plastics) looks pretty shaky. Plastic frame door has amjor crack, and the other parts, well... Do you have a picture of yours ? If you have please send to me by mail to squawknorbert@hotmail.com Cheers Norbert
  9. To dsmimes, NOT the "upholstery shop" I used in Mesa, AZ. the 80 USD that ispend there were completely wasted. Will have my girlfriend do the next one. She can easily outdo that "expert" cheers Norbert
  10. Great idea, will do it on mine too! However, how are the headrest held in place. If i am not mistaken the open parts of the U (those that go into the seat body) must be attached to something inside the seat, or are they just held in place by the seat foam? The latter would seem a little flimsy to me. cheers Norbert
  11. I wonder if the CHTwas creeping up slowly up and down or making the transition quickly, like a flag. I had the latter case with the oil temp on my 20C (round combi gauge) which "flagged" in and out of the red. Turned out to be an old and cracked wire from gauge to probe. Had it replaced and no problems since the. However, the old girl just had an Insight G1 installed, so I should have comparatives next time. cheers Norbert
  12. My 20 C (1963) has a rather tired carpet with some weird replacemnt in the middle. So I have been thinking about having it replaced, but for my year and model 1963, serial number 2307, the pickings seem slim. So far all I have found is vantage plane plastics who offer a carpet replacement set, cut to model. Does anyone out here have other possible sources ? Cheers Norbert

  14. Hi Jim, Falcon Field gets my vote. Deer Valley is a little too busy and Scottsdale Muni is indeed somwhat " jet-set". Falcon is also Class D, but has is not overly busy with its two parallels, and ATC is generally very nice and helpful. All services are available. Also a nice watering point (Monastery) for the beer afterward is not too far away (Actually at the end of the airport road.). And the scenery around Falcon is nice with typical Arizona mountains. However, depending on where you coming from you might have to transition Class B if you are VFR. Again i would recommend Falcon, but I am biased as my bird lives there. Cheers Norbert M20C
  15. As my Mooney M 20C is getting back from the annual, I finally had a spin-on filter adapter fitted and got rid of the oil screen. I must admit that I always felt a little uneasy about the oil screen only, even with the knowledge that this was the originally certified version and the 25 hour oil change interval would take care of it. I was going for an air-wolf but was told by air-wolf that it would not fit. The B+C angled adapters in Spruce Catalog were no use either as B+C told me the same. Finally had ECI angled adapter (with long distance piece) fitted and all oil and fuel hoses replaced in the context. The oil hoses were quite old, and I figured the disturbance with fitting the adapter would introduce a failure down the line. Anyway looking forward tyo fly it again with this adition to safety and longivety of the engine (hopefully), and the Insight G1 that she also got. Norbert
  16. Quite a few digitals mimic analog instruments, and I think the reason is that the anlog instruments needle points to the value same like a watch. So if you glance in the direction of the tach, the position of the needle will tell you roughly which region you are in. Often that is all that is needed. If you have a purely digital instrument than you have to read the numbers. I do not know if anybody has done a study of it, but I would suspect that humans (me included) are more prone to overlook a readout in a digital instrument than in an analog one. So, I would not buy a purely digital tach, where the presentation is only numbers, but one which has some analog feature with it such as LED which show the region of rpm. cheers Norbert

  18. Actually a remark of Hank in another topic (Serviceability of Glass Panels) triggered this one. I have always been interested in an AoA indicator. Guess that comes from reading Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators and from doing a few hours in gliders. When I bought my (old) Mooney M20C, an AoA indicator was one of the things I really wanted to put in it. Somehow I haven't gotten around to that yet (other needed things took precendence). But flying out of Falcon Field Mesa (FFZ) and into higher terrain airports, it would be a good thing to have. The only indicator that I have seen for GA so far is the Alpha System. Does anybody out there have experience with these units. How are they calibrated to the specific aircraft model? Or, are there any other manufacturers? Grateful for any input. Norbert M20C (1963)
  19. Hmm, I wanted to replace my old airpath with a vertical. My mechanic gave up after a few hours, because he couldn't get is swung and corrected, and stuck the airpath back in. As I am mostly away from my plane, I did not have the tiem to try myself, but I will give it a second attempt next time I am back in PHX, as I find the vertical compass much easier to read. norbert
  20. I concur, I had mine done recently and even it is not a massive reduction in cruise, it is noticeable in full power climbs. Norbert
  21. Hi Bob was at a flight training outfit years ago when on of their Piper Warriors lost about 3 " of the prop blade on night flight from LAX to Vegas. I was not flying it, but I saw the wreckage when it was brought in. Both Pilots survived with light bruises, as they put the plane down next to the interstate in the desert. However, only because they immediately shut the engine down before the vibration (extremely heavy I was told) broke the engine mounts, which would then have been loss of engine and with that weight gone the plane would have been lost. In this case they kept it under control and crashlanded very well, all thing considered. I have to look at my weight and balance, but I think a clean separation of the whole prop would leave the plane still controllable, but the loss of the whole engine certainly not. The main thing that I learned from the accident is that I would shut down the engine immideatley if it suddenly started to vibrate extremely. After all, with a windmiling, or better, stopped prop, the Mooney is quite an efficient glider. Cheers Norbert
  22. And to make it even more interesting how about polishing? My 20C paint is not very shine, so I contemplate the purchase of a CYCLO polisher t give it onec or twice a year a mote thorough shining. Any experience in that area ? Norbert
  23. However, you seem to have a three blade prop on there which has different ranges. I have a M20C and the prop on it is no longer the blade but a Hartzell three blade. If I understand the log entries correct, then I have to avoid only continuos ops in the specified range below 15 Inch MP and the initial restiction, eventhough stil coded on the tach is cancelled. cheers Norbert

  25. Hi Carusoam, you are of course right. The panel is not the original, but a refit. I agree that the Hendrix units are beautiful and if I could do at least some of the work myself I would go with it immediately. However my avionics also need a lttle upgrade and the cabling could do with cleaning up. I might at first try a vinyl fix as suggested by M201, but in the long run will change the panel complete. I will however very soon buy his plates for the lights and cowl flap. Norbert
