  1. Okay. Your 510 is not in yet. That confirms my understanding. (I am headed to NH, ME, NJ 9/8 and would really like to have the FS 510 before that to have traffic on the tablet for the copilot's amusement and to update data that expires 9/15 while I'm out of town.) (I have a single Aspen. I'm dubious that I'd be interested in putting ADS-B info on that small display.)
  2. I just replaced the discs and pads on my '66E this week. My A&P instructed me torque the 5/16" bolts to 140 in lb. The assembly needs to be solid and not spring as hydraulic pressure is delivered to the pistons. (Apparently the brakes on some models use 1/4" bolts in which case the torque would be different, 90 "#, I think. (Disclaimer, I am not an A&P. For the most part I do the work because Lynn stays busy and it's much easier to get 5 minutes from him to check something than to get 2 hours from him to do the whole job himself.)
  3. I was going to guess PA28.
  4. Listen to this guy, he's a pilot, that's deity to earth bound creatures.
  5. Spoilsport. Are you sure you're qualified, personality wise, to own a Mooney? Just sayin'...
  6. Bill, sorry to hear about this. I know you'll miss your Mooney and I hope it is only your flying that affected, God bless.
  7. I bought a 4th David Clark for my plane at KOSH -- the new ONE-X. $895. Much improved stereo sound quality, lighter weight, improved comfort, legendary DC toughness, bluetooth, AA batteries in a much nicer control clip auto off, instead of 9V. If you haven't considered DC lately you might check out the ONE-X. Full disclosure, I am not objective re headsets. The 2 passive pairs in the back seat are about 40 years old. I am a big fan of the Worcester MA USA company.
  8. You already have the FS 510? When did you get it? Is your Ipad able to update data to the 650? My avionics shop has me on his call list as soon as it is released.
  9. I have a clean, modern panel in a '66E with GTN 750 with GDL 88 (ADS-B I/O) Plus a GPS 696 mounted and integrated and I have felt no need for a tablet. But I now have an inexpensive Verizon Ellipsis with plenty of storage (16G plus a larger SD card) to take advantage of Garmin's One Pak pricing and free Garmin Pilot. I keep the tablet in a side pocket but I have a couple of Velcro pads on the back and can slap it on a minimal knee pad. I intend to add the Garmin FS 510 to the GTN 750 as soon as it starts shipping (this month?) which will make data updating pretty slick while displaying traffic and weather on the tablet as well as the 750. (Nancy is more interested in traffic than anything else and I can see her staying amused with that info display on the tablet in her lap.)
  10. I installed a Challenger CP-1176 (M20E) several years ago. It's supposed to be an improvement but I am no expert. Seems to work fine with no service required between annuals.
  11. Not in a '66E. But there's not that much holding it up and if you haven't had the headliner down in years you probably ought to do it. In addition to replacing that cable you probably will put fresh tape on the whole vent plenum and confirm that the drain line from the vent is connected and not plugged up. Again, I'm familiar with a '66 and it's possible your '63 is different.
  12. Thanks Andy! I talked to "Joker" yesterday about next year, maybe I'll bring a grandson or two. They're scouts and campers. I'm doing the Mooney Safety PPP in NH in a few weeks, then Mike & Ron's shindig in Panama City Beach and Homecoming in Kerrville in October, D.V. I suspect pilots, like planes, suffer more from rust that wear.
  13. Isn't a J just an F with induction and aerodynamic tweaks? An F with retrofitted 201 goodies should be able to do 160+ ktas @ 75% and best power, ~ 10.7-11.0 gph. Stock it might be a 140 ktas plane. I suppose many Fs now have a 201 windshield but few have a full 201 cowl. These birds would be expected to do more than 140 and less than 160. So, if your F won't do something close to what you'd expect there are too many possible factors to list. A 40-50 year old plane probably has more drag than a new one. The engine may not be fresh. The old girl may have accumulated a few pounds around the hips.
  14. I watched from the ramp a couple of months ago as our airport manager who is an A&P and CFI walked out to a C172 where a pilot I've known for more than 40 years, a life long CFI who has no doubt given several hundred students their primary instruction, was struggling to do a pre-flight for a check out for renting the plane for a short flight the next day to pick up his son. I left, it was too painful to watch, but when I asked about it later Brent told me that telling Bill that it was time to quit was about the toughest thing he'd done as an instructor. I bought my present plane at age 68 and I thought I might own it 5 years. That anniversary is only a few months away. We'll see.
  15. Still peddling that TAS pic of the Aspen? The one that also shows climb of -700 fpm?
  16. That's with full flaps. Would you say you "fly in on"? @ 70 you're well about stall, do you ever hear the stall horn in flare? For what it's worth, I tend to do that as well and never hear the stall horn. But I'm still learning about the Mooneys I've been flying since '69...
  17. Hum, interesting to know that JBars are making a comeback in long bodies!
  18. On our retractable gear, particularly if you change tire brands/models, be sure to jack the plane and cycle the gear a few times to be sure you have clearance. Not all tire are the same.
  19. You're easing the JBar by both latches but you can give her a head's up and she can pull her seat belt good and tight and away from the center aisle.
  20. Yup, it happens to newbies and sometimes to veteran JBar folks. Try putting the gear down in a 2 (3?) step process: release from floor latch and allow the bar to come up a foot or so; pause, mindful of the seatbelt latch, ease the bar by the latch, and finish the process swinging the bar into the down&locked latch. About every 10 or 20 times without tripping the seatbelt you'll forget and get a reminder of your SOP. If that is not satisfactory the previous owner of my E had a Velcro strap around the seatbelt latch.
  21. Ah, Philippians 4:11 "... for I have learned to be content with whatever I have." Not sure Paul could foresee airplanes though...
  22. He's very hopeful that with some cooperation he'll be able to cover Es and Fs and different year model Cs. You should drop David a note. We saw his plane @ KOSH, really nice, and IMO @ a fair price. I think I saw a note from Mike that David plans to have his C at Summit.
  23. Going to Summit this year? Your bird needs Sabermech's cowl! Chump change compared to your panel.
  24. Always liked the C310... and the Aerostar. But you'll not find many with as nice a panel as you're building in your little old M20C.
  25. You just might have what he's looking for.
