  1. Anywheremap (Freedom) had the overlaid approach plates on the moving map when they introduced their app on the iPad about 9 months ago?. Unfortunately, that company has gone nowhere since and are floundering without a vision or a plan.
  2. I like the GDL-39 set up with the 696 and IPad. The only issue I have is the Bluetooth connection between the GDL-39 and the iPad. It's touch and go whether the app I am using on the iPad gets the GPS stream. I haven't found a reliable way to get the connection every time. The GDL-39 utility sees the GDL-39 properly, but non-Garmin apps say missing GPS! I guess the Garmin Pilot (which I don't currently have) works without issues. Any one else have Bluetooth connection issues? Any tricks on how they start up their iPad? http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/34464-xavion-with-gdl-39/

  4. There is some detailed info here on ADS-C (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Contract) http://777cheatsheets.com/resources/ADS.pdf
  5. Well, I am glad I got the GTN-650 even though I was tempted by the IFD-440. It was vapourware as far as the avionics guy I work with was concerned. The GTN-650 has been great and I like the interface. Coming from the 430, it was a vast improvement for me (WAAS, airways and easy flight plan changes), critical for single-pilot IFR.
  6. To me the real issue with high DA is the high ground speed needed to lift off. Losing directional control and correcting for that can be challenging. Once off the ground, things get a bit easier, it comes down to managing airspeed. I have had that experience at Truckee and it was not fun.
  7. What is your EGT reading on cylinder 1 at low RPMs? Last year, when I first had problems with this cylinder, I was seeing a big difference in EGT between cyl 1 and others. The plane ran fine when the power settings were 60% or higher. This is an early warning sign of impending failure or full loss of compression. In my case I had zero compression and the plane still ran fine. Idle was a bit rough, that's about it.
  8. In my M20J, if I can maintain a climb rate of 760ft/min or better (rate of descent with engine out), I can always return to shore. In this case, assuming L Michigan minimum crossing distance is 45nm, I will have to climb to 12,000 ft to glide to either shore. If I go past half way (22.5nm), I will go to the other side, if not I come back to same side. This is in no-wind condition.
  9. Air West confirmed the borescope result. Intake valve seat lifted out. Very rare event to say the least. They think the wrong sized seat was installed on last overhaul. I am done with this cylinder.
  10. Thanks for the advice, Byron. That's precisely what I plan to do. Get a Lycoming first-run cylinder. It's likely to be steel rather than cerminil.
  11. Air West at KSQL. I am going to get another cylinder, not going to try and repair a second time.
  12. The cylinder was removed yesterday. Here's what the inside looked like. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/34377-cyl1-a-io-360-a3b6/

    IO-360 A3B6 cylinder 1

Zero compression cylinder after recent annual
  14. From the album: IO-360 A3B6 cylinder 1

The intake valve seat had lifted off and created a leak. Zero compression. Not very clear in this view, but borescope inspection showed this clearly. The plane lost power on take off on the runway.
  15. Yeah, I run LOP all the time. I am going to try Camguard going forward.
  16. It was overhauled last year - yes. Last time it was partial loss of compression and the leak was not easy to find with the borescope. To answer the other questions, I will take pics for sure and no, I don't use Camguard.
  17. I lost my engine (or rather had very rough running engine) on take off last weekend and aborted the takeoff on time. It could have been an off airport landing if I had taken to the air and was lucky it happened on the runway. The options for an off airport landing wouldn't have been good at that location/runway. Found out that cyl 1 intake valve unseated as seen on the borescope. I will be taking off the cylinder this weekend. I am not sure if it could be due to a stuck valve. My compressions were all above 76 until this incident, CHTs from 315 to 345 (cyl #4 being the hottest) and oil temp between 188 and 193. I lean aggressively on the ground and engine was running smoothly until this happened. The same cylinder lost compression last year.
  18. Worst case, you may have lost compression in a cylinder. Lost cyl #1 a couple of days ago on the take off run. Leak around intake valve. Aborted the landing in time. Just after an annual too. I hate annuals! Something always seems to go wrong after one.
  19. I measured all my Champion plugs and they ranged from 1.5k ohms to 85k ohms. The average, let's say was over 20k ohms! Only two plugs were under 5k ohms (out of 8). The engine ran fine, the plugs tested OK on the bomb tester but I am sure I was giving up some airspeed and could probably push it further LOP if they had lower resistance. I am currently swapping them out for Tempest massives. I measured the Tempest and they range from 750 ohms to 1.05k ohms. The resistance values should be more stable than the Champions over time based on their design.
  20. I wouldn't trust this set up for IFR. OK for VFR.
  21. If you have a Garmin 696/796 or some of the earlier Garmin portables, the GDL-39 will drive those along with an iPAD. This was the only reason I went for this solution. It will provide GPS input to a Xavion, but not compatible for traffic or weather. I am using Anywheremap (AWM) for now on the iPAD (I used Garmin Pilot for 6 months and liked it) but am hoping that my lifetime subscription to AWM has some legs left. If AWM goes down the drain, then I may go with Garmin Pilot which is the only ADS-B rx it works with. Eventually get the GDL-88 for ADS-B out. So, to give a lease on life to the 696 and not going with XM this is the best solution for me.
  22. I would love to hear the one-way conversation on liveatc.net!
  23. I had similar issue but with a frayed wire. Mine wasn't as expensive, but I do have a spare alternator now and was looking for an excuse to replace the Kelly. Vibration appears to be the biggest issue in avionics/electrics from auto-pilots to GPSs and other equipment. Looking at the connections to ground and other power/signal connections should be the first step. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/8788-intermittent-charging-failure-m20j/
  24. I get this gurgling sound after every shut down. I think it is some pressure getting relieved within the engine and probably quite normal. Lasts about 30s or so.
  25. If somebody is going to give me an AoA indicator for free, I will put it in. Maybe I will look at it from time to time
