  1. I have a Garmin 430 manual lying around and don't need it any more. It was before the WAAS version came out (1999 edition). I will send it to the first Mooneyspace regular member who responds. I will pay the postage.
  2. This is exactly what I have. My 696 takes in puts from the GTN650 (x-fill the flight plan), GDL-39 (Wx/traffic) and the Zaon XRX (traffic). I don't use the Zaon interface much these days and leave it on its own display. It requires some switching and going through a few set up menus changes but for a longer flight it works well. Once the GDL-88 is in, the ADS-B solution will be complete.
  3. Perhaps from a sales pitch point of view, yes. I have been asked by potential passengers whether they can don a parachute or can they jump out of the plane in an emergency.
  4. On Sunday, while flying at 5,500 ft, ATC tells me - "Traffic 12 o' clock 3 miles same direction, you are catching up to him." I said "Negative contact, will deviate 10 deg left to avoid the traffic". A short while later, on my right, a Cessna was puttering along and it seemed like it was standing still as I quickly overtook it. Yes, happens very often and everyone on this group has a story to tell. The Mooney is an incredible flying machine - efficient, beautiful and timeless. Glad to see it back in business!
  5. The pilot will have to fill us in since ... "Normally, the Federal Aviation Administration or the National Transportation Safety Board or both would investigate, but not this time due to the federal government shutdown."
  6. The GDL-88 is probably the best solution for those not wanting to fly above 18k in the US. As a bonus, you will get it drive panel avionics with traffic. And perhaps some day drive your G500! You wouldn't have to change your Mode C transponder. For basic compliance there are several transponders with extended squitter that will meet all ADS-B out requirements including those flying about 18k. The choices depend on your aircraft altitude capability, existing avionics and upgrade paths you envision. Will there be a version of a GDL-88 that supports ADS-B out for all altitudes?
  7. I don't see how the FAA will allow a portable/built-in GPS to provide WAAS level information to this transmitter. The transmitter part is certainly doable from a portable unit since it is not providing an intelligence to the ADS-B out signal, but the position source will have to be from a panel installed WAAS certified GPS. If so, I would just replace my existing mode C transponder with a Mode-S /ADS-B out capability such as the BK KT-74.
  8. I keep the power in so I don't have an issue of shock cooling. Within approx 4 miles of the airport, at about 2000 AGL, I level out, reduce power, reduce speed to under 130 knots and drop the gear. On final approach I am at 80 mph and can stop the aircraft in 400-500 ft. I don't use speed brakes unless I have to.
  9. I understand they this company is trying to get approval. Is this legal to use now? If it were, it would indeed be an inexpensive solution to get all traffic.
  10. "This is undoutedly one of the finest Mooney 201 in existance." A couple of bad spelling mistakes right on the first line doesn't bode well at all.
  11. You don't really need to run it dry. You can run it dry to the point the dipstick sees no fuel, but there is still around 10 gallons left (in the J at least). The 25 gallon mark is a good absolute calibration point as you fill 2 or 5 gallons at a time and build the curve. I use the same graph for the left and right tanks as the difference is slight.
  12. The Garmin 696 has a extended line depiction on the map based on time or distance. For example, one can set it to look at X miles ahead or Y mins ahead. This will work well at unfamiliar airports on when to get to this 2-3 mile level segment.
  13. This is great information. Thanks for posting this.
  14. I have the IC-706 Mk II as well and considering installing it in the Mooney and would like to be able to removable for terrestrial use as well. What kind of antenna set up do you have? Thanks. Sriram
  15. The smoke is blowing north towards KTVL and is not looking good. http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/sat-bin/display10.cgi?SIZE=full&PHOT=yes&AREA=pacific/eastern/sierra&PROD=vis&TYPE=ssmi&NAV=epac_westcoast&DISPLAY=Latest&ARCHIVE=Latest&CGI=epac_westcoast.cgi&CURRENT=20130823.1845.goes15.vis.x.sierra.x.jpg&MOSAIC_SCALE=25
  16. I would second this option. The BART station is fine. Here's more info on transportation to Candlestick for 49er games http://www.transitunlimited.org/Candlestick_Park
  17. Thanks for the information. I will probably re-subscribe to GP on iPad and move to Android version when they finally catch up with all the iOS features.
  18. I agree with the wind barbs. Just too few and far between on ADS-B. Can't say about the NEXRAD etc, haven't had the opportunity yet to see much of that around where I fly. I can probably turn on the XM music only subscription (costs $25 for 6 months, cancel, re-subscribe ad-infinitum) on the 696 for the music/news.
  19. As a J owner, I am rooting for the J
  20. Could you comment on Garmin Pilot (GP) on Android compared to iOS if you know? Is the Android version as up to date in terms of features as the iOS version? I am thinking of using GP on a Nexus 7 (which has a smaller screen compared to an iPad 2 and will go on the yoke nicely). Also the Nexus 7 has a built-in GPS which will be a back up if needed. I have the Garmin 696 for weather but will use the Nexus 7 for the charts and traffic. Thanks!
  21. Congrats! I would like to work towards being a CFI as well.
  22. OAT sensor: Mine is under the left wing in an inspection panel. It sticks out a couple of inches.
  23. After a point, I stopped tracking things too closely! Jeff_S said it best.
  24. Mine is suction mounted on the windshield in front of passenger angled towards pilot. Can be rotated 90 deg if desired. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/34464-xavion-with-gdl-39/
  25. It seems the following relationship holds. F:J :: K:252 I would save up to get the 252 if I were to upgrade from the J.
