I was lucky to find a great owner who had the plane for 30 years and could tell me the two people who owner it before him. He even still had the buisness card of the man that owned it before him. Great guy that only sold it because his wife passed and she was one of the main reasons he flew. He offered to buy it back at any time if for some reason I could no longer afford it or had to deploy and had no where to store it or anyone to look after it. Hard not to believe a man like that.

M20E Model Parts Catalog (MAN1006). Anybody have?
PilotDerek replied to bdjohn4's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Curious why you believe the previous annual was "overly superficial"? There is a website out there that you can get (for free) the PDF version of the parts manual (it covers the 65-67E as well as others). I (and I'm sure others here) would love to hear your experiences with this annaul. -
My plane has no damage history or unlogged repairs. When I was shopping I looked at a 76 M20C that had apparent repairs to the wing tip, roof top and tail. He claimed he had no idea and the logbook had nothing in it. The skins were a completely different shade and the roof repair was not done with the proper rivets according to my A&P.

This is not a 201 windshield right?
PilotDerek replied to NateZ's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If there is room between the bar and the windshield it is the 201 mod. Looking at your kidney panels, I agree it does look like the 201 windshield. -

Quote: allsmiles We are blessed to be living in a country which offers us liberties, rights and privileges. Don't confuse things. Flying is indeed a privilege as is driving and paying taxes. Yes it is a privilege to be able to pay taxes! To enjoy this privilege means you are making enough money and thus you pay taxes! The goal is not to complain about paying taxes but to make enough income to be able to pay it. Just as the goal is not to complain about some common sense TSA procedures. Play along and enjoy the privilege of flying and owning an airplane. It is for the benefit of all involved and critical to the protection of these privileges we sometimes take for granted. We all know not everybody can enjoy these privileges! Look around the world and see what's happening. Stop complaining and wining and realize how good you have it!!

Mitch, I agree that our government has gone overboard with aviation security but nothing else. Do you need a background check to rent a u-haul? Do you go through the ridiculous TSA screening to get on a train or subway? No. It truly saddens me how much people are willing to give up in the name of safety, and a false safety at that. These directives much like gun control only punish law abiding citizens. Criminal and terrorists are not going to be stopped by these restrictions. Anyone who believes this, sorry to burst your bubble. If they want an idea to get on the airport, why won’t my pilot’s cert and picture id work? I will indeed be writing my representation on this issue because it truly serves no purpose. I may add that if they truly want to increase security they should fence off truck stops with the same security checks. Do not be dissuaded from the issue by the references to Hitler’s Nazi Germany. That man slowly took away people’s right while making other people feel good about it. It was all about public control. If you think there are not similarities to what is happening in our country you need to rethink it. There may not be the atrocities of life, but many of our traditions and beliefs are being taken from us and our children. Bottom line: Write your Congressmen and Senator’s as AOPA was unable to win this fight on their own, together we may. "Beware the leader who bangs the drums of crises and patriotism...it emboldens the blood and narrows the mind. When the drums have reached a fever pitch...the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry...rather, in...fused with fear, they will offer up all of their rights...and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done." - Julius Caesar

I finaced my mooney. I have no buisness nor plan on it. My mooney is for my family enjoyment. Renting was out of the question as the closest airport to rent from is over an hour away and a comparable plane would cost me an hour what my monthly payment is. Now we have a plane available when we want 15 mins from the house. I don't disagree that if you are capable of buying it outright than do so, but if you can't there is no shame in borrowing. I am actually surprised at how many view borrowing negatively. The only need in life is food and water. You don't need a house, you can rent. You don't need a car, you can use public transportation. Prioritize your wants, that's what ownership takes. My two cents.

I just put that code in and the site said there is no coupon for that code.

Pre-buy inspection...absolutely necessary?
PilotDerek replied to jeckford's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Quote: fantom If your goal is to hold an IA accountable for a prebuy, expect to pay thousands, not hundreds. You could only hold someone accountable the moment the plane came out of the PPI, because who knows what is done to the plane after the PPI. In my opinion it would be totally impractical, but the lawyers would love it. -

Pre-buy inspection...absolutely necessary?
PilotDerek replied to jeckford's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Has anyone ever heard of someone holding a mech responsible for their pre-buy? It seems to me that a pre-buy is as useful as a home inspection prior to purchase. I have known a lot of people that were burned by horrible home inspector's that missed big issues and were unable to hold the inspector responsible. i'm not advicating that we shouldn't do a pre-buy; however it seems that many put way too much stock in the results. I had a pre-buy because my mechanical knowledge of aircrafts was limited. I have since found issues that my pre-buy missed, luckly none that were major but one was an airworthy issue. I think the best person to do a pre-buy is either yourself or a friend who knows the aircraft. I wold ask many on this site to help me on a pre-buy if I had to do it over again. Maybe then it would only cost me a few beers vice a few hundred dollars. Seriously though I would love to know if anyone has ever held a IA accountable. -

Mooney-specific tools for Annual
PilotDerek replied to N9453V's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
N9453V, I would like to know who you in California you saw. Just for my personal knowledge not to start anything. Since I am a new owner and located in CA I like to hear feedback on any shop I may use good and bad to help my decisions when I need to choose. PM me if you don't want to post. Thank you in advance. -
Awesome! I have heard nothing but good things about ArtCraft.

Quote: carusoam Derek, It helps to have a friend with a small screw driver make this adjustment. If you have the standard Alcor unit, it does not come alive until you have the engine producing. If you are alone, it takes some trial and effort. alcor recommends setting the needle at 65% power pointing to an asterisk that may be silk screened about two thirds up the scale. Note: the first time I made an adjustment, the needle moved more freely. If the plane had not been flown, this may be an issue. Exercise the needle using the screw and return it to it's original position. Note 2: using a screw driver behind the panel is very close to where 12v power has no covers. Use typical precautions. Best regards, -a-

Quote: carusoam Key word here is probably re-calibration or scaling. Since absolute EGT is not critical, getting it to read properly in the scale is what is important. With the simple Alcor unit, a screw on the back of the guage shifted the scale.

Thanks, EI says 1 1/2 is ideal, Insight says 2-3 in. Either way sounds like mine are too far away. Anyone know if it would be bad to just install new probes higher leaving the other ones in place (since their is a hole there)? Recommendations welcome. Dan, I'm not looking for absolutes but when the gauge barely registers 1/4 of the way up on all four cylinders after a half hour of flight something is wrong. The engine was overhauled last year and it sounds/reads like they installed the probes low.
-
Can anyone tell me or direct me to where I can find info on where the egt probe should be installed? My egt readings are very low and looking at my probes they seem like they may be too far down the exhaust (approx 4 in). Wondering if the low readings across all four is the probe placement or the meter. Any help appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and safe travels (via car, Mooney, or human mailing tube) to and from!

That's too bad. Hate to see any crash.
