  3. Quote: 201er I don't know where this whole "taking the active phrase came from" especially cause I only hear it at uncontrolled airports. At towered airports I never hear anything about an active besides the ATIS. All ATC instructions and read backs involve saying the actual runway. I was taught from day one to say "taking active", my CFI also taught me to request flight following. I have used the phrase "taking active" with a couple different instructors and also heard it from other pilots all over Southern Cali and never heard someone say that was improper. I'm curious now if it was in the Sporty's videos or King video's I saw. I will have to look. I think that as long as everyone understands what you are doing, it doesn't matter. Saying "taking active rnwy 26" or "departing rnwy 26" tells me you are using rnwy 26. To be honest saying "departing rnwy 26" makes me think you are already heading down the runway not getting into position for takeoff. Better communicate something then nothing at all, which I have also seen.
  4. Other pet peeve? No such thing as taking the active at an uncontrolled airport. There is no active by definition. Makes me always want to go on the air and say 'hey, don't take it, I'm going to need it to take off'... g
  5. Ok, it seems nearly everyone uses it on a regular basis. Now here is another question. Would you still use it if they (Government) attach a user fee? Just for the record I do NOT support a user fees and have made my feelings known to my Senator and Congressmen. Again curious who would stop using it, or reduce the amount they use it.
  6. Quote: N601RX Has anyone noticed the footnote on the list of approved aircraft? ## It seems it is not approved for any Mooneys with a Hartzel Prop.
  7. Quote: KSMooniac That would be nice to reduce weight up front with such a setup. Looking at the EIS-41000 flight manual the entire system weigh 7.5 lbs. I don't know what a mag weighs. It may just be a wash weight wise.
  8. Anyone going to install this? Would also love to hear some PIREPs. Like the increased HP and reduced fuel usage they advertise but powerflow advertises about the same improvements but have heard differing PIREPs on that.
  9. Quote: 74657 I think that the small amount of radio work required with FF helped me out with understanding the ins/outs of IFR communication.
  10. Quote: rbridges no, it comes with the O&N kits. I don't know the specifics, but I do know they have to cut a 3rd fuel panel on the top of the wing on both sides, and they change out the fuel caps.
  11. How many of you use flight following? Do you have a set distance to determine if you use it or not? I used it for my cross-countries when I was going for my PPL and haven’t used it since (although the furthest I’ve gone since is 150 miles). If I fly towards the Valley (So Cal) I would defiantly use it due to the busy airspace but have actually been ignored by ATC in that area before when asking for flight following. What have been your experiences?
  12. Quote: 74657 I don't think that I will ever stop learning no matter what rating I stop at. The day I "know all there is to know" is the day I know just enough to get myself killed.
  13. Did you already have that fuel cap? I like that alot more than the originals. I would love some info on it.
  14. Quote: carusoam Derek, Fuel flow is a great idea. If you have the opportunity, consider integrating the data with your future engine monitor and gps. At least consider what it takes to add this data for best benefit. It may only take a wire here or there. It is good to have EGT/CHT data logged that includes the fuel flow. It is good to have fuel required to destination calculations. Congrats again, -a-
  15. I realize my thread got hijacked but that is ok. Here are some photos of my plane in her old home. I am currently having some panel work done (adding an audio panel, Fuel Flow, avionic master, and updating wiring/breakers). I will post the after picture of the panel once completed.
  16. Congrats!! I hope to get my IR next year (just don't have the time to devote to it right now). Just a FYI I read on AOPA's training facebook page that if plan on going for CFI as well as commercial to go ahead and do them together. They say the tests are similar and so are the manuevers. Maybe some CFI's on here can confirm or oppose this train of thought since they have gone through it all. Good luck on your next step.
  17. Vintage Mooney owners, do you have a cowl plug and if so where did you get it. I had ordered one from aircraft spuce and recieved a call today saying that the company doesn't make one for my Mooney. (it would have been nice to know that nearly three weeks ago when I ordered it). Just wondering if you just made your own or know who sells them.
  18. Quote: orangemtl ...so, anyone want to talk about ailerons, or landing speeds or glass panels, or something? John Green and others make excellent points: but we have Human Events, and Hot Air, and Huffington Post for those discussions. I have very strong economic and political opinions: but on this site, I'm just a low time pilot with a pretty plane. We can poke fun at the Cirrus antics, and Bonanza poseurs or whatever, just like football rivalries, but: at the heart of it, I'll side with just about any aviator, and just about any airplane manufacturer versus their detractors. As Franklin famously said, If we don't hang together, we shall surely hang separately.
  19. Will these work with mono jacks?
  20. Quote: Mitch A good contact location for Mooney specific CFI's maybe MAPA PPP. www.mapasafety.com. These are the folks that put on the proficiency program.
  21. I would love to know who the Mooney CFI and CFII are in Southern California. I have been lucky to find a couple CFII's that are either Mooney owners or had some Mooney experience but one has deployed.
  22. I wish there was anything available other than a tie down at my airport. The county said they'll give you a 15 year lease if you build a hanger, but you have to pay to run the water and electric out to it. If there were more owners here I would see if they wanted to go in on building just a shade for our spots.
  23. Looking at replacing my mains. What ply does everyone use?
  24. I'm very happy to say that I have brought my new Mooney to her new home at 29 Palms. The previous owner flew with me to 29 Palms. It was a perfect So Cal flying day. The air was smooth as glass. I am lucky owner #4 of this great plane. She needs a few updates in the avionics department but that will come in time. I am looking forward to all the trips we will take together. I want to thank everyone on this forum for their continous words of wisdom and knowledge. I learn something new everyday from all of you.
  25. Everything I ever read on the mod says that they are only for looks. No speed added. They do look good though.
