  1. Anyone local to the area know if any of the available airports have a train that can take me into town? I'd rather not have to take a cab and the hotel is a few blocks from the mall.
  2. I have a wedding to attend in DC in a couple weeks. I figure I'll come in under an IFR flight plan to an airport in the ADIZ. Since I'll come in under IFR, I'm under the impression that I don't have to do any special training. However, I don't know the best way to get in to the city. I think the wedding is near the heart of DC, or rather, the middle, since DC has no heart. What's the best airport to fly into where I could get a quick route to public transportation that can get me into the city? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. There's a video of a high density altitude crash into the trees from inside the plane. You see full grown trees look like they're exploding from the prop hitting them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I spoke with Tanis; they have a replacement probe that connects either to the valve cover or the intake manifold. The probes are $140/pc. I live in South Florida and have never had a reason to use the heater. I'm considering possibly just removing the cylinder heaters.
  5. I don't really know if we would get the type of luxury of going slow enough to pick the trees in the woods. Maybe if you're going to overshoot a clearing this might work. At 300 ft in a Bonanza, I think it's a crap shoot. I would be curious if he was at Vx or Vy -- reason being that in the time that it takes you to react, you lose a lot of speed and you'll never get it back at that altitude.
  6. The chart shows the 201 at 201mph at 10gph. I'm skeptical. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Just make sure they're not leaking. I met a guy a couple weeks ago who lost all his fuel after a fuel pump replacement and wrecked his airplane due to fuel exhaustion.
  8. The greatest thermal stress on your engine is when you take the runway and apply full power. Also, I don't mind doing my "engine out" practice with the gear down. I know I can get the plane to the ground. If hot and high, slow to 85mph and drop like a rock in a slip.
  9. I spoke with JPI. They said that if fuel pressure is in the limitations in the POH, they will include the sensor. The only remaining issue is the Tanis heater. They said that I need to contact Tanis about how to make the heater work with JPI's probes. Also, as far as the tach is concerned, they have to set it for the EDM-900; the configuration tool works with the 930, but not the 900.
  10. Another advantage of an LLC, especially with a registered agent is that if somebody google's your name to see if you've got anything worth taking, they'll have to do some digging to find out you own an airplane. With an attorney as a registered agent, they know they'll be writing a letter to a lawyer to begin with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I sure hope not. I'm flying 40+ hours/month as it is. The left gauge sometimes works. If I had to bet, I'd put my money on it being the 48 year old gauges. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. 5. No bladders. 15.. I think it's standard to have one cylinder (#3?) to not have a heater element. I will make sure I get advised on this. 22. That's good. I fly a lot and can't predict within 40 hours two weeks ahead of maintenance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Also, if you do decide to stop at ABQ and are on an instrument plan, they had me cross the mountain at 11,000 ft and then dive for the airport. I had to do a 360 to get down because my rate of descent was inadequate. It was at night and I passed the airport before starting that 360 because I could see lights under me and I assumed the dark area behind me was a mountain. I was coming from Lubbock area at the time so I likely would have come in from a different heading. Every time I'd see the mountains in Breaking Bad, I'd think about that trip.
  14. If the wind is blowing, you may be in for a wild ride. I had 15 seconds of terror of severe turbulence at 11,000ft at around noon in New Mexico. I was completely out of control. I've never experienced anything like it before or since. If I had to do it over again, I would have left right at sunrise and crossed then before the winds picked up.
  15. I think GAMIs always sweat a little, but that looks excessive. All of my cylinders have dark discoloration around the GAMIs. Is your #2 EGT peaking before the others? I'd be suspicious of a partially clogged injector or perhaps a crack in the fuel line from the spider. With the engine off, I'd open the throttle, full rich and run the boost pump with the cowling off and see if I could see where that fuel was leaking from. Your engine will eventually start draining fuel out from a drain line under the belly after running the pump for several seconds (With the engine off, fuel ends up draining into the intake and then out the drain in the intake manifold), one cylinder will be loaded up with fuel (the one with the intake valve open fills up) and it may be a little weird starting.
  16. I'm ordering an EDM-900 and having it shipped to my IA for when I'm back in town. My reason for going with the JPI is I want to remove the factory M20F six pack, which includes the fuel level gauges and there is a $400 instant rebate this month on the EDM-900. JPI is closed today, I couldn't get a clear answer from Spruce and I don't want to keep bugging the IA for every little question; I'd rather give him the completed list and have him say "ok." There's a questionnaire that I'm not quite sure on. I'm ordering the kit for the 4-cyl w/ L/R fuel levels. I want to get rid of ALL of the factory instruments in my panel at once. I'll have it mounted in a standard hole and rearrange the right half of my panel at a later date. Here is the questionnaire. Those that I'm not sure on are in red with comments: 1. Aircraft Make/ Model: __Mooney M20F_ Year___67___ Aircraft N-Number________ Aircraft S/N________ 2. Engine Manufacturer: Check one: Lycoming__X__ Continental____ Other________________________ 3. Engine Type: (TIO-360, O-360 etc):IO360-A1A____ 4. Engine: Stock: Yes_X_ No____ ….if “No” provide a Complete Copy of the STC and AFMS. 5. Are there Engine/Airframe related STC’s like Intercoolers, Turbochargers etc.? Yes___ No_X__ If “Yes” please provide a complete copy of the STC and AFM Supplemental markings pages. comment: I have the LoPresti cowling with the bigger oil cooler, SlikStart system, powerflow exhaust and GAMIjectors, but I don't think these are the types of modifications that are relevant for the engine monitor. 6. Engine Temperature (Preference) in ºF__X__ (Standard) or ºC____ 7. Magneto Part No. (i.e. P/N S21 or 6000 etc.) Bendix P/N_________ Slick P/N __????________ (I don't know the Slick P/N and can't find it in the logs) 8. Pressurized Magnetos? Yes_____ No__X___ Other Tach Generator Type (i.e. UMA, Light Speed)_______ 9. Number of Fuel Level Gauges: Check: 1___ 2_X__ 3___ 4___ Switch operated gauges? Yes ___No___ Switch operated? The indications change (go up) with the master switch on. I have a feeling they're inductive and that their 50 year old age is making them not go to zero like they're supposed to. 10. Number of Fuel Level Sending Units: 1___2_X__3___4___5___6____ (Senders in series count as 1). 11. Number of Fuel Tanks: Check: 1____ 2__X__3____ 4____5____6____ (930/960 Displays 4 Tanks max.) 12. Fuel Level Sender Type: Resistive__X__ Penney Cap____ Gull____ If other____(Please contact JPI) Note: Senders for Fuel Level not included in price, use existing aircraft senders. I'm ordering the unit for L/R fuel tanks. This question confuses me a little. Since I'm paying extra for fuel level, does that mean it includes the sender in that case? 13. Usable Fuel: (Main: Left__32___ Right___32__ ) (Aux: Left_____ Right_____ ) Center Main_____ Forward_____ Aft_____ 14. Fuel Flow and Fuel Quantity are displayed in (Circle Preference): Gallons, Liters, Lbs., and Kilograms. 15. Tanis Heating System? Yes__X__ No____ Note: JPI Bayonet Probes must be used for CHT. I have the heaters on three cylinders; the fourth has the stock CHT probe. I assume this is the standard configuration and I'll get 3 Tanis CHT probes and a regular one? 16. System Voltage 14__X__ 28 ____ 17. You don’t have fuel pressure installed in the instrument panel, but want it as an option at extra cost? Yes____ No___X__ What limits? Low __14__ High__30__ (Not available for Gravity Systems). This one really confuses me. I have the fuel pressure gauge integrated into the same instrument as the MP gauge. I have fuel pressure installed in the instrument panel, but I want it to be handled by this instead so I can get rid of that braided fuel line that runs into my panel. In my case, i want to replace it. 18. Carburetor with Engine Driven Pump? Yes____ No__X__ Gravity Feed? Yes____ No __X__ 19. Fuel Injected Engine? Yes__X__ No ____ 20. If ordering EDM-960, where will you install the DAU’s? Engine firewall_____ is standard with 10ft. leads. DAU installation in the cockpit_____ requires 20ft. leads at an additional price of $450.
  17. My 67F has them as well and they are also spot-on. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that when the previous owner had the tanks resealed at "weep-no-more" that the gauges were recommended and installed then.
  18. Remember, if you have to ditch in cold water, you will have no control over holding your breath and you will start to gasp. You must be ready to paw for the surface as you will start to inhale water immediately.
  19. I think that years ago it was even more difficult to get past the legal and regulatory barriers than today. Big business has been big business for hundreds of years.
  20. Yup. It's amazing how much has been done in living memory (barely, in this case, but supposedly Bob Hoover met one of the Wright brothers). Our great nation with its system of government has brought forth more technological progression for mankind since its inception than the rest of the world back to the beginning of time. I read recently that the compound bow was invented by a guy in Missouri back in the 1960s... Think about that. All this time that man used the bow and arrow and nobody thought to apply simple mechanical advantage to the design. There is still much to be invented.
  21. I had a seating issue with my secondary, also a 12D. It seemed to manifest itself first as the higher frequencies being tougher to receive or quieter. Then the display became dimmer. Reracking it fixed the issue in my case.
  22. I seem to be flying about 200 per year, though I've flown more than 100 hrs since August this year.
  23. A generous amount of Aeroglaze dry wash should do the trick; make sure you wax again afterwards as it'll take the wax off too (Rejex is the best).
  24. Mine was 17 years old and had 1400+ hours on it when it failed. Oddly enough, it was the Airborne model that was supposed to have been replaced due to an AD or SB regarding failure. It was shortly after I purchased the airplane and I think that the highly experienced previous owner may have been to credit with its long life -- and then a kid like me gets it and it lasts three months. edit: oh crap; I just realized this was the Bravo forum.
