  1. Does anybody find it odd that someone with out any posts would put this survey question up on Mooney Space without any ability to respond except to the survey? I think we all know the outcome so....? I have seen a few of these type of posts and am wondering what they are about.
  2. This is shaping up to be a great opportunity for folks to get together. We have confirmed John Pallante who instructs at the Mooney Saftey Foundation and will speak on the new cockpit technologies. John will kick off the event at 10AM so you guys might like to come early. The Naval Museum has offered up its ready room for John's presentation and it is open to all attendees at no cost. The folks From the Toys for Kids program will be grilling the burghers and taking photo's of the A/C and the kids next to the planes. These will be uploaded to their site for everyones pleasure. More to come.... Be an ambassadore, help out the needy & come join the fun!!
  3. There is either a circuit breaker or an in line fuse to provide power to the unit. I'd check for that first. Next put a volt meter to the power (red wire) to verify that you have 12V power gong to the unit. If you do then the unit shuould be remioved & sent back to JPI for service.
  4. Quote: 201er Where's the cheapest place to get camguard? How often do you need to add it? Just complete oil changes or when adding oil as well? Should I wait till my next oil change before adding it the first time?
  5. Patrick Forget the owl snake etc They do not work if they do not move. Try this on top of your rudder where the birds sit It is like silicone and birds hate it. http://www.bird-x.com/bird-proof-gel-products-37.php?page_id=66 If you do not get it before we get together I'll give you some.
  6. This is the minimally equipped lean machine which differed from the standard Mooney in its equipment like the autopilot which does not have alt hold and no HSI. For me alt hold would be a requirement and adds considerable expense but an HSI & alt hold autopilot is expected in this class of A/C as part of the price. Garmin no longer supports the MX20 so it is a boat anchor as it can not be repaired. The most cost effective solution is probably replacement with an GMX 200. The KT76A transponder has an AD on it which may or may not be applicable. The GPS has been commented as a bit dated but the real issue is its placement in the panal which probably does not meet IFR certification for enroute/approach. That assumes it is still supported. I'd check the logs to see if it is IFR certified for approach & enroute. In the end this A/C will requires substantial panal upgrades possibly which makes it no bargain. Check to see how long it has been on the market. Tough to sell an A/C these days without at least a 430W/530W so plan accordingly plus ......
  7. The subject 252 does not indicate that it has anything other than a single point EGT so I would assume it has been run ROP but who knows. In any event I'd probably replace each cyl. as required but I'd plan on having to do them sooner rather than latter. Even so you might have no issues as in my case. I'd not pass on an A/C just because it had so few hours. Just plan accordingly.
  8. If you want to increase speed you need to fly the 231 at altiudes generally with O2. Otherwise the 201 particularly a light LM is probably faster. The real speed increase comes with long range tanks avoiding a fuel stop. This assumes one is willing to fly for 5+ hours without a break. I bought an 99' Eagle STC'ed 310HP with 260 Hrs on the engine & 310TT with the the standard 100 gal tanks on the long body. It has been flawless in its first year. Typically 231's do not make TBO without a top overhaul so I'd be less concerned with the top at this point. I'd think 13-15K would be an appropriate range which you could factor into the price.
  9. You might consider ebay. I was able to acquire a set that worked perfectly for $75. I later traded them in for $300 on a pair of A-20's
  10. Norman I agree that we should encourage Aidyne to consider the Mooney Airframe. Over the last six months i have been in contact with them on this very topic. At this point they are very focused on the completion of the existing announcements particulary the Bonanza line. Until those are completed my sense is there will be no additional airframes. I even offered my A/C as a test bed so we will see.
  11. Anybody who is attending would you please let us know of any "specials" I am particularly interested in the Aspen/King 770 and updates on its release. Also I'm curious about Avidyne's DFC 90 autopilot and possible application for our Mooney's Thanks
  12. Similar issue with a CHT probe & it turned out to be a loose connection at the probe. Sine I had already bought a replacement probe I changed it just in case.
  13. Well the word on the street is that a smaller Ipad will be out before year end. Part of that comes from the screen makers who are gearing proudution for a 7" + screen for Apple. Like Todd I am very happy with WingX on my Ipad 2 and I am a bit concerned over the higher heat of the Ipad 3 so untill something better arrives I am sticking with what I have.
  14. Quote: FlyDave I like Squirel's answer! I LMAO!! But for me, GUMPS-F downwind, base and final. Also, the airplane is a lot slipperier than I'm used to in the pattern without the gear down so it just doesn't feel right. But always 3 GUMPS-F; Gas, Undercarriage, Mixture, Prop, Flaps - FULL ON FINAL (unless strong cross-wind). Oh yeah, if all else fails short final the gear warning sounds. Quiet Mitch!!!!!
  15. Here you go right from the Garmin rep as posted on Beechtalk. Hello Everyone, this was an unfortunate problem that was found with some NAV boards that were built by our vendor. There is a serial number break for the defective boards, the problem is we know what the date codes are on the defective boards and when the boards arrived. However there was also another date code of board during this time frame as well so it's impossible to identify for sure which units have the defective board. So what we have to do is bring all the units that fall into this serial number range, take apart the unit, if it has the known bad date code we're replacing the NAV board and re-aligning. If does not have the bad date code the unit is returned to service, mod 1 is marked and the unit returned. Unfortunately we're limited on how many units we can do each day as they do have to go back through our production facility. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, however the problem with these boards is not consistent as it had to do with the way the board itself with the multilayer's was assembled. let me know if there is any questions.Best Regards, _________________Trek A. 16. Do I understand that Garmin has recalled all the GTN 750's for a possible bad board? More to the point the unit has to go back to the factory for inspection &/or modification if required.
  17. Well like Jose' and others I do not have an extra 22K laying around for this type of upgrade. I'm going to stick with my KLN 94 & GMX 200 for the time being. FWITW I do know that anyone buying a plane today seems to want WASS and expects the seller to take a haircut without it. (Personally I only fly to airpots with ILS so I don't really care.) I used that to my advantage when I bought my A/C last year so I would suspect that within 5 years all of us will have to update if we ever expect to sell. It's kind of like a house that needs updating every five-ten years. At the five year mark you might as well upgrade & enjoy the look for five years before selling as the buyer will want to make a reduction if you do not do the upgrade. With that said it occurs to me that there will be new product from King/Aspen & Avidyne will get a chance to work out the 540 bugs. Some products may get an extended life like the voice activated flight plan for the Garmin 430/530 series and maybe even something else on the horizon.
  18. Quote: OR75 http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgAD.nsf/Frameset?OpenPage Only for the R and TN models so far it looks like. Issuing an AD is a process. Easy enough to remove the fairing and look in the meantime.
  19. I thought I'd bump this back to the top. I still would like to know if this SB which started for the R & M is now an AD for all models of Mooney's?
  20. In part I would submit that this issue of glass safety has more to do with initial training than the actual display. A good friend of mine who is an MD participated in Navy studies that showed that under high stress the pilot would revert to their initial training A/C experience. Thus it would make sense that if one were trained in glass cockpits from their inception that pilot would be as safe as one trained on steam guages. The issue is in the latter case muscle memory will override recent experience & the pilot will look for what their initial system training provided. Also consider that the "systems" we all now have are oft times at odds with one another & we need to determine which is correct. Just think of inputing three altimeter settings as an example. I know in my case I specifically looked for an A/C with steam guages because empirically I did not want to take a chance on new systems as I do not fly the way I once did. ie often & to minimums. My favorite radio used to be an ADF which btw I no longer have. No way could I misinterprete that needel!! I also agree that for me needle movement is quicker to interprete. I still struggle with the digital CHT on takeoff as I have to look at it under high workload & recognize the number while staring at it to see the trend as opposed to seeing a needle move towards the red zone with a glance. This can also be seen in our daily lives. In my office we deal with purchasing agents who do not use the phone. They text or e-mail. For most this is their first job & they are quite comfortable with this style. In fact they object to a phone call which would make things much simpler in many cases. It also allows for a level of rudeness that does not take place with a phone call. With that said they do not even see the rudeness because it is what they have grown up with & the process is not only accepted but preferred. It is a training & experience issue but it almost borders on a cutural clash and inhibits good communications.
  21. Steve That looks to be a great choice!! Congradulations You should be able to get years out of that A/C without needing to put upgrade $'s into it. The avionics, paint & interior are quite impressive. You are a smart buyer. Good luck!!
  22. In looking at those seats they appear to be about the same overall height as the more current Ovation seats that have headrests. I'm using the window to judge the height. If so you might not need headrests. Alternatively you might try a swap with an Ovation at some fly in to see if the Ovation seat backs are interchangeable. If so look for something on the used parts market that can be recovered.
  23. Quote: N4352H Only if you have the KSC-55 King HSI remote compass already installed.
  24. In case anyone is interested these guys are offering a special on the Sandel SN 3500 $6950 http://www.sea-avionics.com/documents/promotions/SEA_SN3500.pdf
  25. While I understand that the original SB M20 313 was turned into an emergency AD is this new SB 313 A a service bulletin (optional) or an AD? In any event I will have it looked at but I am curious. Thanks
