  2. Well Just to add a bit of confusion to the mix since I happen to like Phillips 20/50 over Shell. I worked with my A & P the other day to change the oil & filter. I had told him to order the Phillips but after the oil was drained he proceeded to add the Aeroshell multi. I thought since I was adding that new elixar "Camguard" it would not make a differance but now I am really worried. He went on to say that Aeroshell is the "only" oil to use. When I pointed out to him that we last put in the Phillips he indicated that was probably something he had "laying" around. He went on to say which is the point here that: All of the multi oils need to meet certain gov. requirements to be labled as such and 90% of engine wear happens at startup. His feeling is that there is really little differance between these brands. Go figure. Also it occurs to me that the sample size of Mike Bush's A/C might just be coincidence since it is so small and I believe statistically unreliable vs the fleet. It is possible that Aeroshell sells more oil or some other reason for his position. BTW I think Mike is a great resource just sayin'. So if my expensive engine is going to be trashed with the aeroshell multi should I head out to the airport & immediately change the oil? BTW the pixies add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil about 10 hrs prior to the oil change on the recommendation of a well known MAPA resource. The filter was absoultely squeecky clean at 50 hrs.
  3. Recently I have been trying to figure out how to turn on/off my engine pre heater remotely. The FBO at Atlantic City does not have pre heating service & my A/C sits outside in the cold wind albeit with a full A/C cover. Fortunately the FBO has electric next to my tie down so I can plug the A/C in to use my battery minder & engine pre heater. However I am not convinced of the validity of keeping a pre heater plugged in 24/7 nor is the FBO happy to have me use that much electric. So What to do? Here is a cheap, simple & elegant solution which allows two circuits to both turn on the preheater & an in cabin heater with your cell phone. You send a coded text message & it returns a message advising its status of "On or Off" You can also use preset timers. I added a no commitment $10/mo Sim card to my ATT family plan which is required for the switch. This is the ebay listing for it 30 amp 2 Switch GSM Remote Control Relay http://www.ebay.com/itm/30-amp-2-Switch-GSM-Remote-Control-Relay-/200597872557?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item2eb4909fad and is the one I bought. The one in the ebay ad does require a DC adapter. After you order it, just tell the seller in the message that you need the AC version and documentation! A word of warning, the documentation is very poor. I was fortunate & discovered this idea on another site. The user helped me do the wiring & to understand the programming which is simple if you have the docs. The Mfg is in the process of revising the docs after my pointing out to him how poor they are. Anyway the thing works like a champ. I have installed it in the battery compartment of the A/C & the signal is perfect. I also use an extension cord that has a light on the end so that I as well as the FBO know that it is on. When I get to the airport there is no doubt that the engine preheater has been switched to the on position. Then I remove the unit & cords from the battery compartment & off I go with a warm cozy cabin & a happy engine.
  4. As I said either remove the equipment restoring the A/C to the original avionics specs when insured or advise the insurance company of the new equipment with an actual invoice from the shop and request the increased hull value. It does not have to have a break down of labor vs material it simply need to prove the increased value. If you have the AOPA legal insurance you might want to make a call & get a free hour with an aviation attorney just in case. The adjuster is not your friend & I would be contacting the broker for his/her advise. They have more of a vested interest in your satisfaction.
  5. One other thought regarding the avionics is that if you did not just increase your hull insurance due to the new avionics it would seem perfectly reasonable to reinstall the old avionics that were what the A/C had been insured for previously. The better avionics gives the insurance company an advantage if it is totaled & disadvaantages you. Alternatively some policies give you a set period to increase the hull value after new avionics are installed. Perhaps you can make that adjustment even now. I'm sure someone in the insurance industry will chime in to help you out.
  6. I'd suggest you contact your shop of choice & have them make all arrangements for transport be it flight or truck. That way there is only one bill to pay. There are any number of MSC's with that capability and the insurace will cover the cost. I'd also advise the insurance company of the additional damage and open a second claim.
  7. Looks like we were up on the same day. Can you say 235 kts at 9000' 2550 RPM LOP!! in a Screamin Eagle' Pensacola Fl to Atlantic City in under 4 hrs Thank you Lord!! http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N20098/history/20120101/1746Z/KPNS/KACY/tracklog
  8. Leave tomarrow for Kitty Hawk then down to Sarasota -Bradenton for a day with a long lost cousin and New Years Eve with the grand kids. I'll be flying back on New Years day. Say hi if you are in the skies. And Happy New Years to all my friends on Mooneyspace and best wishes for 2012. Fly safe
  9. Quote: MooneyPilot This is my first post. I purchased a 78J in May and my only disappointment has been the interior roominess. Like DrBill, I am 6'2"" with a 34" inseam. Unlike DrBill, I do not have enough leg room even with the pilot's seat in its most rearward notch. Crosswind landings were especially challenging because the yoke would hit my knee when I inputted aileron to offset the crosswind. I solved this problem by sliding the pilot's seat all the way back to its stop. Although this is a very comfortable flying position for me, the pilot's seat now almost touches the rear bench seat. I also found it difficult entering and exiting the aircraft so I removed the copilot's seat which essentially makes my J a two seater. This setup works for me in that 90 percent of my flying is by myself with the other 10 percent being with my wife who really likes all the legroom she has sitting in the right rear bench seat.
  10. I'm planning a trip to Fl. for a few days next week. First stop will be in Pensacola on Mon the 26th. Does anyone have recommendations for a shop that does Corrosion X treatment & perhaps detailing. Contacts & costs would be helpful. I really have no set plans or scheduel but am thinking of heading down to the Naples area therafter returning by weeks end to NJ. Thanks

For those of you using Wingx Pro7 on your Ipad or for those considering a purchase Hilton software has just made available a similar version for the Iphone as NO ADDITIOAL CHARGE if you have a subscription for your Ipad. Just download the app to your Iphone. You may or may not have to pay the .99 cent fee to Apple for the free trial but once you have it downloades there will be no additional cost as per Hilton Software.. There is also an option to "sync" your subscription but I could not remember my password. Don't forget to update your CTC Duats credentials & Seattle subscription if you have one as part of WingX Pro7
  12. Here is the complete trouble shooting guide from King including cable info https://www.bendixking.com/wingman/servlet/com.merx.npoint.servlets.DocumentServlet?docid=D6CD4AA16-EA2C-8CD4-BA9D-A91BFD94A73F
  13. Walt Does "At present I do use a SDDR-31 but have had trouble getting the database to load onto the card through the SDDR-31" mean you can't get the updates or just sometimes can not get them? When I bought my A/C earlier this year it came with the KLN 94 that had been upgraded from an 89 B but both the avionics shop & me had trouble getting the updates & I had to resort to exchanging the database cards with King. What I mean is that it appeared to download data but would not work in the KLN 94. Subsequently I have gone thru the drill to find that 1) My KLN 94 had firmware V. 101 even though it was sold well after the new firmware 02/03 was available. That 01 version has a known bug that will not allow downloads to properly be installed via the internet. So check the firmware first. 2) The KLN 94 is set up with the data port on the front. In my research there is no other way that I have found to use a separate cable thru the A/C 89B dataport to update the KLN 94 except with that same serial cable although I understand there were some iterations of 89 B plugs that had differant panal plugs but still were a serial cable. King & Sandisk parterned with a Bendix/King firmware specific for the SDDR-31 & is required to get that thing to work. Since you indicated yours had been uodated by King I'd suspect a KLN 01 firmware issue or a defective SDDR-31 unit or an incompatible PC or a bad datacard. You might try the King loader pgm on an older desktop PC. I am really only addressing the issue of your data base download difficulty. I really do not think you will be able to get that data port on the A/C panal to update with anything but the same serial cable that is used for the KLN 94. You might try a usb to serial adapter but call King for their suggestion as I know from other threads that not all adapters work with the download pgm. This is old technology & it has not been updated by King except with the Sandisk usb option. BTW One can only use the SDDR 31 as other San Disk products will not work.
  14. Quote: FoxMike I have KLN 94 in my Bravo. The plane came from the factory with an 89b. I want to start downloading database updates from a tablet to the 94. I have been using an card reader. I think the Bravo is wired to allow updating what I need to know is what jack is required to plug into the airplane. Also does anyone have the correct cable to use. Thanks in advance Walt
  15. Walt I have been going through this drill of updates for most of the year. First in order to update over the Internet be certain that you have firmware revision 102 or 103 as shown on startup otherwise you can't download through the Internet. Second that plug only works with an older laptop with a serial port & earlier version of windows. You might find it much easier to use the Sandisk SDDR31 but be sure it is for the KlN94. Maybe that is what you are using as a card reader? Personally I have the Sandisk as well as two database cards and the Lone Star docking station. That allows me to do updates in the office or at home with or without the KLN 94.
  16. Quote: 201er I've had the same thing happen with my AI. Mech tested vac system since and said it's flawless (no suction gauge on Mooneys to go by).
  17. Mine is also sold
  18. One point to consider with long-range tanks is that it gives you the opportunity to purchase larger quantities of fuel at a less expensive FBO then perhaps your home base. Useful for those local flights.
  19. The phraseolorgy is "cleared through" for an intermediate stop which would be indicatd in the remarks section. At issue is that you as the arriving A/C will shut down the airport for other traffic untill once again airborne. So one might arrive, cancel & ask for "clearance on request" for a quick turn. That also works for separate flight plans which is what I would do. This "cleared thru" IFR flight plan would typically be used for an uncontroled airport that has limited comms making it difficult to pick up a separate clearance & sometimes necessitating a climb to altitude. Typically controllers IMHO would probably prefer separate flight plans. http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/atc/atc0402.html Another option based on weather is a "Composite" VFR-IFR flight plan which allows the A/C to take off VFR fly to a fix & then become IFR It works in reverse also.
  20. Davtron Inc. makes a nice modestly priced digital replacement like their mdl M800. It is essentially plug & play and and at $150 or less is probably less expensive than a mechanic troubleshooting.
  21. Ok, That makes sense. I will see what my maintenance manual shows & post a picture. I imagine that they are the same.
  22. I'm not sure why you are posting in the Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models) forum. The reason I mention this is that the removable seat option and one piece belly pan explanined by Jose' was only available on 1984 J's & newer. I think that is also true of the 231 with the belly pan although I am not certain of the removable seat option. So If your A/C is older it would have had to have been modified by someone like Mod Works or SWM in order for you to have the removable seat option. I think what you are describing is a seat that is permanently attached but which may be removed simarly to the front seats but not with out some effort. I had an 83 K that did not have removable seats but I thought that it did for the longest time. The maintenace manual should have a picture if you have that available.
  23. To me it would make zero differance as the current owner really may only know about where it lived while he owned it. The age of the A/C may have the most bearing as it would have had time to have an issue like SB 208 which would apply to A/C hangered or not. Lots of airplanes fly in the rain. Also did it have Corrosion X applied if it was near the coasts? I've seen A/C hangered that were literally mouse houses so it's all about the owner and their on going care. I've personally bought both and had no issues so don't pass up what otherwise looks like a good A/C. Currently mine lives outside but is completely covered with fabric- wings, tail, fuselage, rudder & elevators. How do I describe that when I go to sell not that I think anybody will really care? Just get a good pre-buy and you'll do fine.
  24. In order for the JPI 700 to use the Gem 602 probes the unit has to be adapted at the JPI factory typical for JPI's GEM 602 trade in program for the JPI 700. However there does not appear to be a similar trade program for the 730 which would mean that one could not use the Gem probes with the 730.
