From what dark place did you conjure that nasty rant? -
ICON A5: A Great Airplane With a Deadly Appeal

Maybe some or even many people didn’t have such common decency in the past only they didn’t used to have the technologies to post a selfie of themselves dancing in front of a dying man. -
That would be like the opposite of Mike's "I'm in a TBM" smile shown above.

Dang! Now that's the TBM-smile I want! Only time every SAT in a TBM was at KHVN where I went for business. And they have a dealer - and a brand new 910 was on the taramac - BRAND new with a shiny shiny engine, and the plastic still on the seats. Dealer let me sit in it for 30 seconds and it smelled like a new car. Then my wife called "Erik, ERIK! Its time to go honey...."

Every time I try to justify my airplane on financial grounds, I end up optimizing a cost function that leads me to a 50cc vespa scooter. Doh!

I'm 6'4'' and 220#...the TBM fits me too. But the TBM930 fits me the best. Certainly better than the 850 or the dinky ol' 700. The 910 is nice but I get carpal tunnel syndrome trying to manipulate the inferior avionics. I wonder if I could get a doctor to write me a perscription for a TBM930?

ICON A5: A Great Airplane With a Deadly Appeal

I was thinking about this crash this weekend. I bet the pilot was a superbly skilled pilot. I mean here is a superbly physically talented guy who was literally one of the best pro athletes in the world in his chosen sport. That takes balance, strength, and courage. Sometimes those sort of skills can be dangerous in other areas, like flying which in a different way rewards the modest to know when to make certain kinds of decisions. I bet he was able to make those low pass wave runner moved 99 times out of 100 with no problem. Sort of a nonsequeter but also about talented people - I remember once seeing a certain neurosurgeon I know of regionally at a local airport doing a pre flight on his airplane. He was walking around his airplane with a dictaphone in his hand dictating details of an upcoming surgery, I could tell by over hearing him as this was next to my tie down at that airport. So see he was giving only half attention to each. I am not sure if I was more not wanting to be a passenger in that flight, or the guy who's surgery he was only giving half attention while doing his preflight. Either way you see it really stuck out in my memory as that was maybe 7 or 8 years ago. -
Once in a champ - there were fierce winds even at about 1-2k. SO we decided to fly the 2 miles from the airport to my house...the kids were little and I phoned my wife and told her we were coming and would be there "soon"...there was plenty of time to call during the 2 mile flight. Then at about 1000ft we slowed down a bit and literally hovered over the house for a couple of minutes, flying into the headwind.

I used weepnomore completed last Jan, that merged with Oasis and Eric R together with Paul, and I had a few other jobs done while I was there. Those two guys are fantastic, and their business is fantastic as is their knowledge with Mooney's. Top scores.- 17 replies

Exactly! But let me interpret that differently. 242 is simply the bragging speed of the acclaim - running at 100% power at max altitude. You can't actually cruise at that. But 280 is 70% of the 400hp io720, and so you could actually churn that out hour after hour on the 8 cylinder and therefore actually cruise at 242TAS in principle....on 22gph? That sounds good to me. And - ...didn't I guess that 400hp would allow a 270TAS mooney? Now you are agreeing! So the bragging speed (100% power) of an acclaim with 400hp would be in the 270 range. But more important - you could cruise at 240-245.

Usually if I know the topic well that is being written about, then I have the impression that they are being significantly misleading. -
Well...its a forum - its fun to make up some numbers with artificial precision added for faux credibility and emphasis. So I didn't know the efficiency factor constants you just stated thanks. I agree a little math is good for pilots in general. I am a math professor it is my business to teach math, that includes selling the concept of math, to a general population of engineering students as well as science students.

It sort freaked me out the guy just gawking and never even for a moment even mentioned that maybe someone should do something if not him. I like to think I would. About two years ago there was a van that turned over on the highway, at night on icy roads on a sparsely travelled highway the 416 to Ottawa. I got there within a minute, soon enough that the wheels were still spinning. Me and two other guys from different cars stopped and climbed up on the van, which was sideways, to see if it was ok since no one was responding to our shouting in. I was sort of afraid it might explode or something but then we needed to see what was the situation if he was too injured to move, or needed to be pulled out before it might burn. Then the guy shouted back and climbed out, drunk as a skunk. But safe. -
That's what I'm talking about.

Early on Cirrus had a terrible record but it wasn't the plane's fault. It was advertised as a personal airliner that was so safe as if anyone could fly it anywhere any time. It had a parachute - so you could always get out of jail free with that. And there were a lot of accidents and the safety record was quite poor. Then relatively recently the company re-evaluated their message and training programs and with a concerted effort they turned it around and now they have a super safety record. Meanwhile the members of COPA alway enjoyed an excellent record. In fact, those Cirrus pilots who were members of COPA tended to have a 4 times better than the rest of the Cirrus pilot population safety record. Attribute that to good attitude to do what it takes to fly safe train right make good decisions, etc. I bet the ICON is an excellent airplane, but it is still an airplane and not a jet-ski-toy. BTW people get killed all the time on jet skis. Crashing, drowning, boating drunk, etc. -

I too was pretty shocked they arrived at a fresh crash scene and just gawked at it without even a thought that there could still be a survivor in there needing to be saved as quickly as possible. It never occurred to them. -
Hah! Now that's what Im talking about.... Love the sound of a turbine spooling up. What the heck is the purpose of that?! A turbine on that lil ol thing? What is it?

I row in sculling shells - a lovely quiet sport for early in the morning on a nice flat body of water. Speed boats and sail boats tend to know the coast guard rules about proper separate from a man power boat. Jet skis have many times down right harassed me - I mean charging right at me at 40-50mph and veer off and massively wake me - and let me tell you a racing scull is very tippy and hard to keep upright if waked. SO I need to transition from rowing to full stop and hold both oars and just work to keep the boat from tipping. Once or twice I have had the c*$&% scared out of me that they were actually going to run me over veering at the last second. And oblivious I get a nice wave - hello! We are having a fun day on the water and it looks like you are too! No kidding this has happened many times - and not with the same person.
-
That was my thinking as soon as I saw those early adverts, showing people rolling around like a jet ski and I was wondering why catching a wing is mot a worry.
