  1. I envy you guys. I am dreaming about how much my engine overhaul is costing me After thats done, I'll be dreaming of the rocket
  2. Sorry I stand corrected ... you do not get any form of true altitude with WAAS, just a more precise 2D location on the planet's surface. So yeah dont see the point of WAAS handhelds
  3. If I have a plane then .. I will be in. Crazy idea but exciting.
  4. Accurate altitude because of corrections from ground stations. Non-waas gps units do not have correct pressure or true altitudes. Even then its probably a minr feature when you cannot use it for approaches.
  5. And the prop also needs to change I think. As far as I know, the eagle would then be the same as the ovation.
  6. Good luck! I have heard of very few people learning to fly in a Mooney !
  7. My engine is making metal and since its old - the time has come to overhaul it. My prop overhaul was done about 300 hours ago. Do I need to overhaul the governor and flush the prop hub to get rid of any metal flecks in there? I was thinking a new engine is probably going to make metal - so why not just replace oil and filter after 1 hour flight or so .. that should also "flush" everything? Thanks
  8. And here is an excerpt from my 1987 M20J for maximum performance takeoff - it says do not lift gear until clear of obstacles - which makes sense to me. Like you stated I guess the difference is the speed of gear retraction with a manual gear.
  9. except for those aircraft where retracting the gear causes momentary increase in drag. At the low climb velocities - e.g. Vx when trying to clear obstacles - you may be better of leaving the gear hanging. I will have to look into the POH to see what Mooney recommends for my plane - but if memory serves me right - its retract gear AFTER clearing obstacles. At low speeds and high AOA your predominant drag source is induced and not parasitic. Also when taking off from snowy runways you want the airstream to get rid of snow around your wheels and then lift the gear up (granted most of us don't do that)

  11. I looked into airshares before buying the mooney. Basically it did not make any sense from a cost perspective given the kind of pleasure flying I do (no business or work flying). If you want to be sure your aircraft is ready for flight whenever you decide to go, then airshares is for you. Basically when I talked to the sales rep over the phone, he pretty much said I will be better off with the mooney in terms of costs - for the kind of flying I was looking at.
  12. I like aircraft close to TBO - the 262 is 250 hours from it. I get it for a discount, fly it on condition, rebuild the motor exactly how I want and then fly it exactly how I want. Paint looks fine to me in the pics.
  13. Shoot! you could have achieved 0 or negative ground speed flight that day. Would have been a very interesting picture!
  14. The J itself will set you back 150 an hour wet for 100 hours a year. I dont fly a K but I am guessing its going to be a bit more .. Theres a 262 right now on controller.com for 65k or so. Much better engine, cooling, better induction than the 231
  15. correction the Parat-C smoke hood (from one of the avweb articles referenced above) has a shelf life of 12 years and 6 years for the filter (replaceable)
  16. Safety aside .. its fun to fly an aerobatic aircraft with its better than normal visibility and maneuverability.

You can make your own with OCR (optical character recognition) software. Not sure which one to recommend. There should be a bunch out there. In fact new android phones should be able to take pictures and convert that to text.
  18. Hmmm buggers have a shelf life of 5 years
  19. Damn! Good everyone made it back alive. Too bad one of them quit flying. I am going to keep the smoke hoods in the cockpit from now on. Its cheap compared to everything else I have been paying for Just thinking of the decades old wiring back there gives me pause.
  20. Was starting to get sick towards the end of the first flight. Told the instructor so .. flew level and returned home without hurling anything. Did not get sick after that on all the flights. Dont assume you will either get sick or not get sick. Its a matter of practise. The stomach seems to get more sick when the mind is terrified. Once its a matter of routine its no biggie. Anecdotal evidence suggests drinking cola without the carbonation, chewing on ginger, light meals/snacks before the flight helps. Dont go on an empty stomach or after a buffet. I personally cannot sign off on these methods since I havent tried them.
  21. Curious .. Are these smoke hoods one time use only? Even if they were - thats fine. After all how often will you get a fire in the cockpit.
  22. Yeah agreed .. The outfit trains lear pilots too and the instructor thinks the skills from the piston engined aircraft are still directly transferable. On a different note, looks like they have the airwolf for sale! I have always wanted a relatively cheap bubble canopy tandm seat aerobatic aircraft http://www.flightlab.net/Flightlab.net/Air_Wolf_photo,_specs.html
  23. I did aerobatics and upsets in a decathlon too. But there is another school here in massachusetts (Plymouth, KPYM) where they teach you upsets using more "normal" aircraft. The handling qualities of these aircraft in upset situations are supposed to be vastly different from aerobatic aircraft. I believe they use Zlin and Siai Marchetti aircraft. Cessna's skycatcher test pilot apparently went there to get recurrent training. http://www.flightlab.net/Flightlab.net/Home.html I plan on going there some day
  24. Are there STC props for the rocket? MT propeller has props for the engine that is used in the rocket but on the cessna 320/414 airframe. It also has props for the m20k airframe but with the tsio360 engine. But it doesnt have a STC for the rocket engine on the m20k airframe. I am guessing there is no way to put a different prop on? Or is there?
