  1. A pilot's pride after he lands with the gear up.
  2. Yes, I'm sure I've saved enough money running my normally apsirated O-360 LOP to support this site in some small way. Now I've killed two birds with one stone, told another whopper and turned this into a LOP/ROP thread, hijack!
  3. I like paypal , The information I have gleaned from the archived information has been instrumental in my success as a new Mooney owner. My confidence as a Mooney pilot has been raised to the right level by all the participants here , thanks! I'll be glad to help keep this infomation available to new Mooney owners! Look , I'm going to go ahead and fine myself a $100 liars fee for the use of this great resource! Where else could I tell these stories without being questioned?
  4. ..The man that said," Pull over here, let me out before you kill me, take it around the pattern three times, and DON'T make me walk back to the ramp."?
  5. I once had a big Mooney owner tell me how lucky I was, that my donuts would last on my small Mooney about 7 to 10 years. He said his had to be replaced about every two to three years. I told him If his landings improved he might get 6 or 7 years out of his .
  6. I was at 4000 feet maintaining level flight 23" MP and 2300 RPM. I was amazed at the amount of back pressure to keep the elevator aligned with the stab. I eased it once to find out that it wanted to dive or tuck under. Possibly with a rearward CG the elevator pressure would be reduced and stay in alignment and trim out for that 4 M.P.H. in level flight. I've read here that the Mooney will go faster with a rearward CG.
  7. For what it's worth I went up today and forced the elevator into streamline as I trimmed the tail for level flight. It was an emormous amount of back pressure I had to exert to keep the elevator in line with the stab. It was FAR more than the bungee pressure I can feel on the ground, if I had let it go the plane would have tucked under, there was a very apparent reduction of AOA and speed increased about 4 M.P.H. I'm suspecting that when the wing went flat there was less downwash on the tail plane.
  8. Quote: M016576 .....I'd say this decision probably reduces induced drag by changing CL of the elevator, at the expense of increased parasitic drag over a traditional horizontal stab/elevator/trim tab once in stabilized cruise. At the speeds we operate in a mooney (less than 250kias), this is probably a worth while trade off.
  9. It could be that the stabilizer is not big enough by itself to do the job and the deflection of the elevator was the trade off to keep flat plate area down. here's another : geese fly in formation because it's more efficient, each one off the lead is riding on the vortices of the one in front. It could be that the vortex from the elevator (deflected to create lift instead of just streamlining) is actually making the Mooney go faster as the tail vortex interacts with the vortex off the wing. I'm sure this is the answer until I make up something better! Hit submit crawl under a rock! I'm going to play the part of the model maker who designed the "Phoenix" and use my model aircraft aerodynamics knowledge to justify my assertion.
  10. Quote: KSMooniac That has always bugged me as being un-Mooneylike in temrs of drag. My J is the same. I wonder if the original, lightweight, short-fuselage M20A had the elevator "in trail" nicely with the horizontal stab, and as the weights and fuselage length increased the horizontal/elevator configuration was not updated.
  11. I was told to tell my wife that if anything happened and the FAA asked to see my logbooks she was to simply say that she thought my new girlfriend had them and she haden't bothered to find out who the newest one was.
  12. At least he was kept busy eating the rat sock and not urinating on the spar.
  13. The sizzeling is probably fuel which is spraying into the cylinder due to absorbing heat after shutdown. It may sometimes be heard depending on the position of the valves. ?????
  14. I managed to stick a short field landing at Pulaski Tennessee today in 16 feet. How, you may ask is this possible? With the temperatures in the 105 degree F. range it's easy! The tires are are so soft and the the runway is like hot lava , it's like an mouse in a sticky trap! I wish you could have been there for the takeoff , I managed to get 30 MPH in 5310 feet of soft, sticky tar. When I reached the end of the runway, I and the old Mooney fell off into the rock quarry on the 16 end. I immediately realized that I would get to flying speed before reaching the bottom of the pit and gently nursed the Mooney back into its 1000 FPM climb before reaching the bottom. In spite of all my instincts to pull up , I let her eat negative altitude until airspeed came up. Whew ! It's hot here in the South, but it does wonders for short field landings and takeoffs.
  15. Tragic, however, 110 people died in auto accidents that day , I dare say some children and whole families as well.
  16. Same thing flying out of KNAZ
  17. Quote: tlandrum That looks just like the plane I want... and for the right price... but this forum certantly has made me think again about that!! Has anyone here actually bought a plane off Ebay? It looks like you bid and buy, not chance for an inspection... is that how it works, or do you get a chance to inspect a plane?
  18. Quote: scottfromiowa I hear you too...Some fights aren't worth fighting, but in retrospect your point is well taken and I agree that I should have moved in and explained what I thought of his comment and specifically what I feel he should do with the gas pump after his "driver" finished with it. Life is full of moments. I had a nice flight home. He is merely a worm in the afterbirth...with means, but not the class or dignity to go with it.
  19. Yes, Scott , He was having such a rough day that you should have offered to pay for his turn-around fuel and all . I can't believe you didn't offer to drive him to his destination as well.
  20. http://www.mooney.com/images/pdfs/si-pdf/sim20-95.pdf http://www.mooney.com/images/pdfs/sb-pdf/sbm20-150A.pdf These both address this issue . Read them both they are different , one describes rerouting some cable to the master switch, I believe.
  21. I am never surprised at the kinds of people in the world. I like my circles small, where people understand ; It is actually better to be a small fish in a big pond than to be an asshole.
