  1. I built the electric heater using the exact products from a previous thread from one of our members. But I can't find that thread anymore. The heater is a basic Stanley heater. The ducting is rubber coated which holds the heat better and prevents scratching your paint. Especially important if using through pilot's window as I have done. I picked that up at a HVAC store. I just used metal tape to secure a 6" to 4" reducer and used O ring clamps to secure to duct tubing. Pretty simple really. And a cheap sponge to take up the space in pilot's window to hold the heat in. http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-675900-Pro-Ceramic-Pivoting-Utility/dp/B000LF2CBE http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100111736/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=duct&storeId=10051#.UMCljaWzdjI The remote switch is from Cell Switch. www.cell-switch.com. I found it for $279 on www.aeroinstock.com . T-Mobile has several plans to choose from. I went with one that allows unlimited texts for $15/mo. I was spending twice that in gas to/from my hangar programming my timer. Sounds like Phillip has a better product and cheaper rates on another pre-heat thread. I had already gone with this company and I'm happy with it.
  2. 17 Degrees in Northern Wisconsin this morning and I stepped into a warm Mooney cockpit and fired up my engine and immediately saw 75 degree oil temperature. By the time I got to the runway I was in the green. I bought the Cell Switch remote to start my Tanis heater and electric cabin heat about 6 hours prior to departure. Thank you Mooneyspace members for the ideas and suggestions. Now we just need some snow up here!

  5. I bought a jug of Extreme Simple Green Aircraft Cleaner and a large bag of Costco micro fiber clothes about three years ago. I dilute the Simple Green 4:1 in a spray bottle. It may last another 2-3 years. But then again I fly around bugs.
  6. I'm very happy with the direction this forum is heading. And I think we just set a precedent :-)
  7. I wish this supported Foreflight. It would then be on the top of my list. Or maybe WingX Pro as a stocking stuffer? http://www.xgps170.dualav.com
  8. Sorry guys but it has been sold.
  9. Yes Larry I took them off of my J model.
  10. It was kinda embarrassing when at my second annual, my A&P asked me why I needed 3" rudder pedal extensions on my J model. I'm 6' tall. I told him I didn't need them. He asked "Then why do you have them?". And I said "Because I'm an idiot". Boy what a difference in control and steering! Actually I still had plenty of room with them installed. But I could see how someone of a shorter height might find a little comfort in them. They are going on eBay for $75. But any Mooneyspace friends can make an offer and I'll send them your way. Supposed to fit on all M20 models. mulro767@gmail.com
  11. So Phillip's requires an account with a pre-paid card? I haven't seen anywhere if there are charges for using the cell-switch.
  12. It's getting cold up here in Minnesota!!! And my 20 minute drive to the hangar to program my pre-heat is getting old. Anyone have any experience with this product? It might be on my Christmas list. To Me. From myself. http://cell-switch.com/index.php/products/cs100 Btw, found it on www.aeroinstock.com for $274.
  13. Anybody consider the Dual GPS + ADS-B? It says that it works with several navigation apps but it doesn't specify which ones. I have the Aera 510 hard wired and panel mounted spending $35/month on XM. With the Garmin GDL 39 I can stay hard wired just switching from XM to ADS-B. But I don't plan to ditch ForeFlight for Garmin Pilot so I wouldn't have iPad weather. So my decision is between Stratus, GDL 39, and this Dual GPS/ADS-B that I'm waiting to hear more about. Somebody please buy one and test it out for me:) http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/dualxgps170.php
  14. I hear this a lot from Mooney pilots. I've been lucky enough not to get the windshield iced up or any other part of the airplane for that matter. But I've had a good amount of frost in the morning and fog inside when it's cold out. My heater in my J is almost too much heat at the floor. Even at 10,000' at -10c I have to cycle the heat on and off because it just gets too warm. Even if I barely crack it open. The defrost works just as well. But I'd imagine that ice would be a bit harder to get off. Best stay out!
  15. Aero Balance works great too. Just add your serial number, BEW and it does the rest! Easy setup.
  16. You're right at the altitude where it starts to smell funky.

Minnesota Fire Truck. Sitting inside the hangar at Willmar this Air Tractor "Fire Boss" can suck up 1000 gallons of water from a lake in 15 seconds. Then disperse it over a fire in 20 seconds. Amazing!
  18. Thanks for the advice and stories. I flew over yesterday morning and had it inside the hangar doors at 9 a.m. I left today at 1 p.m. It really did save a lot of time and I hope at least a few bucks saved. But well worth the experience as I learned a lot. I became one with the hangar floor! I was on my back most of the time and that one piece belly is looking better and better each day. Luckily, they had an electric screwdriver which was lovely. And I was able to experience the yo-yo pull on the emergency landing gear. Piece of cake! I highly recommend Willmar Air Service. They are a trustworthy, professional, and friendly group.
  19. Heading to Wilmar, MN on Wednesday for my first owner assisted annual. Any other non-A&P types out there do one at a MSC? What should I expect? I'm really hoping to save some money and learn a bunch more about my J. I was really impressed with the guys there last year but holy big bill!!!$$$
  20. I already have an iPad mini. It's called an iPhone 4S. I've become more and more comfortable with just using it when flying VFR or VMC on an IFR flight plan. However, when flying IMC I feel more comfortable with my large screen iPad on my lap. But by the looks of the new mini, a Ram mount on the yoke might fit perfectly. I'll have to wait a while to justify the price.
  21. With the cowl flaps closed there should still be a small gap. If your cowl flaps are touching metal on metal that could be the source of your noise. It's also an easy adjustment.
  22. Before you zero in on that trim switch make sure your trim disconnect switch (red botton) isn't the culprit. Ditto on cleaning the trim switch but if that bed button is shorted you won't know if the trim switch works. I went through this a couple years ago. I thought I was looking at an $800 part. But instead a very good avionics guy in Griffin, GA charged me 1/2 hour to clean the contacts on that red button. It's worked great ever since. Good luck!
  23. When talking with other Mooney pilots I just say that I own a J model. When talking with other non-Mooney pilots I say I have a "Mooney two oh one". When talking with ATC I say "Mike twenty papa". However my girlfriend calls it a Mini Cooper with wings. So annoying.
