  1. Well I had no idea! You learn something new everyday. Hope I never have to use it.
  2. Wow a 10:1 compression ratio! And some pretty big performance numbers for a 201. I'm impressed and eager to hear from any customers.
  3. Great purchase. And welcome! I bought my J four years ago and this was the first place I went to learn. You will always find it here.
  4. $100 says he's fat. Fat people don't like Mooney.
  5. In 2009 Northwest Flight 188 overflow it's intended landing of Minneapolis by 150 miles. I highly doubt that they were monitoring guard. The last frequency they had set in was from Denver center which was way out of range. 121.5 is almost always in range. It could've saved them.
  6. Here's some lingo that I didn't know for awhile. After transmitting on an ATC frequency a buddy of yours recognizes your voice and wants to chat. He says "Hey Dan, go to fingers!". He means set your #2 to 123.45. Five fingers. Air to air.
  7. I agree with Jim, I always have it on my #2. You'd be surprised how often ATC uses it to find airplanes on the wrong freq. And if I lived anywhere near a TFR I'd monitor it. ATC will start barking on it as soon as you point your nose at a TFR. Also, if there were a fellow GA pilot in trouble and their ELT was activated, it very well could be you that hears it first. Monitor it if you can.
  8. There were a few discussions here about a tiny $800 clutch spring that, if failed, would render your landing gear useless. Both normal and alternate extension. I'd search the forum for "clutch spring" and see what pops up. I think I remember a similar story as well of a gear up.
  9. Check out my pics in my gallery Don. I know a guy down in Peachtree City, GA that did a beautiful job with my custom panel. Mine was so patched up from Loran and ADF removal and I wanted to start over with Garmin and a panel mounted Gizmo. I was quite pleased. I'll track down his number if you're interested. Mine was laser etched powder coated and he even added a Mooney logo. $1000.
  10. Bought my Dahon Speed Uno specifically for my Mooney. It folds and fits easily through the baggage door. It's a 20" wheel single speed with back pedal break so takes some getting used to at first. But it cuts down on the weight (24 lbs. compared to most between 30-40). Great for beach trips. Not for hills unless you like a good workout. http://www.usa.dahon.com/mainnav/bikes/single-view/bike/speed_uno.html
  11. I'm noticing several lights that grab my attention. Gear down, and low volts flashing. Also you mention 2500 rpm? So how steep of an approach are we talking about here? I've never heard of anyone operating a Mooney in a descent like that. Nor have I seen this problem before. I would suggest a flatter descent and, like Bob said, a different power setting like 20"/2200. You'll cool the engine down slowly and still hold a good groundspeed and descent rate.
  12. My Hoskins strobes are acting up again. Looks like the power source is failing. It's only flashing once every three seconds or so on the left side and close to ten on the right. I've decided to replace with all LED this fall at my next annual. What product and part numbers have you used and do they require a form 337? Is there a way to remove the coffee can belly mounted rotating beacon with an all inclusive LED wingtip strobe/ACL combo? Thanks in advance for any info, recs or pictures you can add. Brian
  13. Your question makes no sense to me.
  14. Ok so if I'm ever so unfortunate to crash my precious Mooney please don't post my name and photo until I'm ready to talk. This thread seems very disrespectful to a guy who has probably just said goodbye to his airplane. If he's a Mooneyspace regular, he'll most likely come forward and share his story so that you won't have to experience it. Seriously if I knew that my name and photo would be posted on this page so quickly after a crash I'd probably quit Mooneyspace forever. I'm here to learn how to avoid accidents. Not find out what the guy looks like who just had one.
  15. Here's one from the past. Cessna.
  16. This being a little league baseball game, I'm expecting to see some amateur iPhone video or something soon. You know there was a proud papa filming at the time.
  17. I like this movement as well. I'd love to see the vintage 201 painted on my tail someday.
  18. Don't forget your wing mounted selfie shot! http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/33221-dollar/
  19. Btw I thought my hanger was worth about $25k because that's what I paid for it. But if a tornado takes mine down then $70,000 is what it would cost to rebuild it. So that's how they value it.
  20. Tim call Falcon Insurance. They actually don't do hanger insurance but they are affiliated with USAA and they can set you up there. My hanger is somewhat new and has a pretty expensive bi-fold door. It measures 42'x48' and has an insurance value at $70k. My annual premium is $500 for structure and all of its contents. Brian
  21. McCauley 2 blade 74" on a '81 J.
  22. I finally did it. I could see a difference on my glareshield and in my wet compass. The glareshield used to vibrate and any dust or dirt particles would bounce on top of it. The compass would splash around and wobble. Not any more! I'm hoping this will increase the longevity of parts and plastic. I've had two rocker switches break this last winter. I still feel vibration on the floor especially on the right side. That's from the engine and exhaust. I went from .3 ips to .02. The really interesting point I learned was he was able to drop from .3 to .2 just by flipping the spinner around! I had no idea that the spinner had two dots on one side matched for installation. The rest he just added some counterweight washers to fine tune down to .02 ips. If you're in the Midwest area, I highly recommend Doug Sheers with Harmony Aviation. He's very professional and fairly quick. 2 hours and $225. http://www.propbalancing.com/Technique.htm
  23. I didn't know about it either until now. Friend request sent Don.
  24. Ok your hanger is way too cluttered. Very nice plane though. Congrats!
