  1. If the trip to Key West is going to be a regular trip, I probably makes sense to look at a 252, Rocket or Missile conversion. Also look at range if you plan to make the trip without stopping. Some planes will have extended range tanks.

  3. It may be that there is some of the work that they just are not interested in doing such as the headliner. Perhaps it would be best to just tell them to forget about all the extras and just do the annual if you are unable to move the plane anywhere else. Much of the extra stuff you mentioned can be legally done by the owner.
  4. The FAA pressured us to put up a fence around our airport a couple of years ago which they provided money for. Unfortunately they were more concerned with keeping people out than animals. It covers the open area along the road and goes about 5ft into the woods and stops. We were in KPNS a couple of years ago with is completely fenced and was surprised when a fox wandered out in front of us. We called tower and they asked us to hold and keep an eye on it while they sent someone out to shoot it.
  5. On A Lycoming the Vernatherm is in a parallel path with the oil cooler. It actually closes off to force oil through the cooler. When its open the oil does not flow through the cooler, it bypasses the cooler.
  6. They provide a separate procedure for torquing a single cylinder vs multiple cylinders. They also have torque plates that may be installed when a cylinder is removed or when pulling the case halves together. Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is the starter. It mounts on same side of the case and same general area of the case. If the engine ever kicks back, it puts a lot of extra stress in this area.
  7. Both the ring terminals in the pictures below are for the correct size for the alternator field terminal. The ring terminal on the right is a standard crimp that is sold at most any hardware or auto supply stop. It's actually the Amphenol brand. The one on the left is a heavy duty version available from Mcmaster. I've never had one of them break.
  8. I was at a lycoming seminar a couple of years ago where a discussion about case cracking came up. Lycoming said they had put considerable research into this and could say that much of the cracking was due to improper torquing. They said one of the contributing factors was removing more than one cylinder and then retorquing them using the single cylinder torque sequence instead of the multi cylinder sequence. They said the multi cylinder sequence was developed by mounting strain sensors in areas prone to crack and developing a sequence that minimized strain in these areas. It's also important to lub the threads before torquing, otherwise the clamping forces will not be what they should be for the given torque.

  10. What year did Mooney change the center tube from steel to non-magnetic stainless? On my 67 model it is stainless and I've never had any problems with the vertical card attached to it.
  11. Earlier this year these was $599 new, but the price decreased to $499 over the summer. Go to Ebay and search COMPLETED auctions and you will get a good idea of what they are selling for. Keep in mind ebay will take 10% and paypal another 3%. If you want to sell it somewhere other than Ebay, price it a little below the completed auction price and the buyer will get a good deal and you will end up with more money in your pocket after the sale also.
  12. JPI also has a 2nd power input that can be used to power the unit in the event something happens to the Circuit breaker that is located at the battery. I have the primary input wired directly to a CB mounted beside the battery and then the secondary power input is from the avionics bus. These power inputs are isolated inside the JPI so they cannot cross feed each other.
  13. I have the 900. Both are primary. The main difference is the size of the display and cost difference of the units. The 930 also has a text based remote annunciator, while the 900 just has a remote yellow/red LED combo. The 900 mounts in a standard round hole, the 930 requires a cutout. The software features of each are very similar.
  14. For those worried about getting ever last drop of oil out try jacking up the mains with the pilot side higher than the passenger side. This will get you another 1/2 quart of oil out.
  15. I needed a new throttle cable about a month ago. McFarland wanted $375 to duplicate my old one and I needed to ship my old one in for them to duplicate. Maxwell sold me a new one for $386 and shipped it out the same day.
  16. I stuff a couple of towels under the filter and then slide a zip lock bag over the filter and up under the neck/lip of the filter adapter. Use one hand to keep the bag firmly in place against the bottom of the filter adaptor and screw the filter off with the other hand. Then just lift the filter/bag out. With a little practice you can do it cleanly.
  17. Try rotating it a little bit, and then pushing the button and pulling on it. Sometimes the venier controls get crossed up.
  18. Does anyone know what level of functionality this mock up has? Some of the pictures appear to be real, but other are computer renderings.
  19. Over aggressive stripping can also cause leaks. There was several cases of this reported on Mooneyspace a couple of years ago. The reports were from a shop in California.
  20. Does many large flight schools purchase planes? I've been told before that the large schools who keep newer models lease the under very favorable terms.
  21. If the oil temp goes into the red, the oil pressure will drop considerably. If both of these happened then it is unlikely to be the gauge.
  22. I remember Mike Bush writing about initial TBO a few months ago. I think he said 1200 was the starting point and then with experience it could be increased. The diesel should last a long time, but the reduction drive may be the weak link. My Diesel Jetta has 450,000 miles and is still going strong.
  23. If its like the older models, master relay coil is supplied +12VDC via a short wire that loops back to the relay post that connects to the battery. The Master switch is connected to the other side of the coil and pulls it down to ground to make the relay come on.
  24. .010 is the most a crank can be ground. The options are .003, .006, and.010.
  25. You could ask him to deposit $2250 into the account to cover any potential copay for a claim until such time that he had enough time that you are able to get another policy with a $250 deductible. At that point his money could be refunded.
