In my Citabria, I just mounted it directly to a wing rib. It is on the next to last outer most rib on the left wing. Works great. Lee

I have a similar situation, I live in NW Georgia and have place in Atlantic Beach Fl, which is about a 6.5 hour drive. We make the 260nm trip in the Mooney (m20J) in about 1:45. We fly this trip about every 6 weeks. When the Mooney is home, my son uses it for business trips. It’s a great two person airplane. In my opinion, it’s not comfortable with all seats occupied. However, my son routinely takes his family of four (2 teenagers) in the Mooney. lee

AV-30 vs. Garmin 275 vs. Garmin G5 vs. ______
laytonl replied to wolfbyte's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Actually the magnetometer is certified. I have one for my AV30C’s in the citabria. It still has to be reset occasionally, but it’s not unusual for the DG to go several days without needing to reset to the compass. The Av30 is a great device, and can be a good transitional unit. If you are not comfortable with it as your primary DG, you can always repurpose it as a backup AI. Lee -
Yes, I believe he said it’s in the experimental category. Lee

I’ve always thought that a type rating was only required for airplanes over 12,500 lbs and jets. I hadn’t thought of 61.31(3) until my son said he had to get a type rating to fly a Pilatus PC-9, which has a 950 hp turbine engine. I asked several neighbors (airline pilots) and they all said a type rating is only required as per 61.31(1) and (2). They had never paid attention to (3) either. I learn something new everyday - and forget most of it! lee

When is a type rating required? Think carefully before you answer. lee

Completely new panel and annunciator options
laytonl replied to Schllc's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
@201Mooniac I’m looking at eliminating my annunciator panel and was considering using Ms25041 indicators. However, I would like to know which Eaton style annunciator you used. Lee -
This does seem to be pointing to the regulator. Lee

1992 M20J Instrument Cluster for sale
laytonl replied to laytonl's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Both left and right were built in 2020. Left starting acting flaky this year. Cluster is still available. Lee -
I mounted my edm930 on the left panel. I’m old and it’s difficult to see on the right side panel. I really like having everything in front of me. Lee

As others have said, it depends. My home runway is one-way. I generally will accept 10 kts tailwind for takeoff or landing based on weight and Temperature, for my 3,000 ft grass strip. The strip has a significant downhill component for takeoff. Lee

Looking for pre buy inspection shop near Dalton, GA.
laytonl replied to bazerk007's topic in General Mooney Talk
I agree, Joey is top notch. If you want an unassociated opinion up you might try Cecil Wilson, Aerocare, in Carrollton Ga (CTJ). He is a one man shop and he owns a Mooney. He does a good bit of work for me. He is fair and honest and a good mechanic. Lee -
This is the clock from my 1992 M20J. i removed this clock as part of my recent upgrades; working when removed. $75 including shipping. lee

Calibrating JPI 930 Fuel Gauges
laytonl replied to Speed Merchant's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I can send you my data when I’m back home. However, you really need to do your own calibration and it’s a simple process. After draining the tanks and reinstalling the drain sumps, It only took about 30 minutes to do the calibration. Lee -
Mooney p/n 880059-507 s/n: T-17270 Model 169BH 28 VDC Left fuel gauge is flaky, right gauge was rebuild two years ago OT, OP, FF, ammeter were all fine. Face plates are cracked on most instruments due to heavy handed mechanics. $600 including shipping in contintenal US. Lee

This is a used JPI EDM-730 which was removed for an upgrade. I installed it new in 2014. s/n 35162 Includes 4-EGT probes (2 yrs old) 3- Bayonet CHT probes 1- Ring CHT probe New OAT Sensor Does not include OT, OP, or FF sensors. $1,200 including shipping in contintenal US. Lee

Relabeling the wires is not difficult. I just print out labels in 6 pt type and the put them on the wires with clear shrink wrap. It’s a lot easier to read than JPI’s fine print.

Can I get a sanity check on a hangar lease agreement?
laytonl replied to BlueSky247's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Many years ago I was a member of an airport authority and was in charge of developing lease agreements with tenants. Our agreement was an initial term of 35 years with one 15 year extension after which the hangar, or any other improvements made by the tenant reverted back to the airport authority. The agreement stated that the authority could increase the ground lease annually at a rate not to exceed the CPI-U, and the sum of increases was limited to a fixed dollar amount. I believe the airport charges $0.05 per square foot of leased space. IIRC, I developed our lease agreement based on an industry standard at the time (1990’s). Lee -
I’m partially color blind, so maybe it is magenta. iPad tries to be too helpful when correcting spelling.
