  1. Quote: DonMuncy I attended a FAAST seminar yesterday where the guy conducting the operation said they did not like the term "uncontrolled field". They prefer to call them "untowered" and to think of them as "pilot controlled". Not a critical distinction, but does point out that we should be careful to help control safety. Don
  2. In my C model, I use 1" per 1000ft, at a 500 FPM descent. This is based on ATC allowing a "standard" descent, with time/nautical miles to do so. Half the time, I end up immediately throttling to 20" and a 6-800 FPM. If I don't I'll end up at redline or above, and unable to slow to gear down speed when necessary.
  3. Quote: Mitch I have a fully functioning GPMS system in my aircraft. However, there is no way to disable it or mute it. Her name is Jolie Lucas!
  4. Quote: M20F Would be curious as to manifold/rpm settings to go with performance figures above. 135kts to 153kts is a fairly large swing.
  5. 1966 C model - 145 TAS, 6-7000' (unless good tailwind higher), 9.5 gph
  6. A friend and his co-worker had a J model, so I flew around 20hrs with them. I quickly saw that a Mooney would be my choice of aircraft when it came time to purchase. When I decided to take the plunge I called the nearest MSC just to inquire about costs, things to look out for, etc. They had a C model that was being sold, and met my mission needs. After a one hour flight in it, I called the owner and made him an offer. Four years later I'm still excited taking trips, and cherish my investment.
  7. Thanks for sharing that, Scott. Be sure to file your NASA ARC form 277 (http://asrs.arc.nasa.gov/report/electronic.html) within 10 days.
  8. Bill - listen to your wife on this one. It's a good decision to let a reputable MSC do the pre-buy, even if you have to travel a bit to get that done. They know your type aircraft the best. Good luck, and I hope it all works out in your favor.
  9. I would speak to the club president (if there is such) or a board member, a CFI in the club, or your local FAASteam rep. If all of those are unavailablle, speak with the airport manager. I belong to a flying club, and our members would be interested to know if that type behaviour is going on. I'm a FAASteam rep, so if you need help finding one in your area, let me know.
  10. You made a good decision. Thanks for the pics and update. Keep looking, as there are many good Mooneys for sale out there.
  11. I would be concerned by the lack of recent flying time. First of all, get a pre-buy from a reputable MSC. Not sure of your location, but several can be recommended when replying back. Second, my C model had not been flown much the previous year when I bought it. After putting close to 400hrs the first year, I had enough engine issues to warrant a overhaul. I believe it was related to the aicraft sitting for most of the year tied down and flown little. I was forewarned but rolled the dice and lost. Now, I have nice aircraft with a great engine, and perfect for my missions, but I did learn the hard way. This is a great forum, and many folks are willing to help out. Let us know how it goes.
  12. I can see why you would be annoyed. When I'm flying with a student (Private license or greater) I don't jump in unless safety of flight is questionable, and this doesn't sound like it fit the description. Have a calm talk on the ground with him and question why he did that. Probably a mistake, and he may own up to it. If you decide to continue flying with him, make clear the PIC boundaries and what efforts you need out of him.
  13. If you're thinking of NC, go to Outer Banks (KMQI). Great beach, plenty of things to do (go to Ocracoke, W95, for the day). Probably a mad-house over the 4th holiday, but a great place to visit.
  14. Mitch, no doubt he loves aviation. I've taken him on a couple of trips and he really enjoyed it. I look forward to the webinar.
  15. I'll be there, Jolie. I just hope my boss doesn't walk in during the broadcast...
  16. Not sure why my address wouldn't work for you. I use it quite a bit. Send me yours and I'll send one to you.
  17. Tankles, I'm a CFI and a C model owner. I might be able to help to some extent. Feel free to PM or e-mail me, lahso@speedandaltitude.com.
  18. Quote: Kris_Adams ...I am leaning toward Zephyr engines or another engine shop (can’t remember their name right now). The plane is at Cole Aviation and he will be removing/re-installing the engine and he is happy to send it to the engine shop of my preference. Joey is also providing advice but due to the expense, I want to make sure I am as informed as possible.
  19. Quote: jetdriven ..Where do most of you add oil?
  20. Jolie, those colors sound great. Please post the pics when finished. I'm curious: Does ArtCraft demo on computer what the end results will look like when choosing colors, swirls, etc?
  21. I don't have personal experience with the XGPS150, but a gadget student of mine likes it better than the BE. I can find out more if you have specific questions.
  22. Ryan, I've dealt with Joey for four years, and have been happy with him. Some folks, haven't. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have - good or bad. Just PM me if you want to keep it private.
  23. At my Class Charlie airport, you can't taxi to the Commercial side or wait inside that area of the airport. You go the FBO on the field, and your passenger can walk/car-taxi over to the FBO. What airport is it?
  24. This is one of my dream trips to make. Glad you got back safe, Nick. Has anyone taken dogs to the islands? We take our dogs with us when we travel, and I'd like to know how Customs reacted.
  25. Very sad. Certainly prayers with the families. Would like to see the reports that come out of the investigation(s).
