Folding Mooney M20C/E/F/J/K Bench seat
JayMatt replied to piperpainter's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
This is a revived post I never knew I needed! How long does this take to do? I have a long trip and this would allow taking golf clubs so much easier. -
got an idea on the cost? I wanna do mine in the next year or so.

I’m Officially a Mooniac Now
JayMatt replied to Huckster79's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
First time I saw I Mooney and it's funky tail I was like, "what is that? I want one." Ever since then I worked towards getting one and I can't imagine trading it for anything else. They just fly so dang smooth and precise. They crosswind land amazing, at least to me anyway. Any the design is very straight forward and easy to understand if you work on them yourself with API supervision. All in all they are very solid and nice. -
The ones with the eyeballs. Carbon fiber. What the cost on those? That's what I want because imo those better direct the airflow right?

@AH-1 Cobra Pilot are you making those air vent covers too by chance? Can you?

I'll bite. Who to say an increase in C02 is a bad thing? I can look up the facts or you can look them up, but the earth is getting greener because of the elevated C02 levels. What people fail to understand is that the world was created for man. It was designed perfectly to accommodate man. As C02 levels raise plant life flourishes. We are in a closed loop system where everything is renewable. My point being it's a non issue used to control people.

1978 M20J, N6201Y Price dropped to $149,900
JayMatt replied to Ross Statham's topic in Aircraft Classifieds
I think 50 hours a year is plenty. Not to hijack the thread on a beautiful plane. People get so caught up on things that don't matter. Fly the plane... On Jimmy's World he pulls crap out of a barn that sat 20 years and fly's it home on WD-40. I also see plenty of new rotax motors fail. Just fly the thing and keep it clean and you'll be fine. Once every 2 weeks is plenty to keep a plane from deteriorating if it's in a hangar. Good Luck on the sale. Looks Like it's worth the money to me! -
I did it in my regular box hangar, several guys have done the same out here. We actually have quite a few builders and some that have won first place at oshkosh. Basically I hung plastic and setup a ventilation system. There is still some dirt in the paint but now that I've painted and have started closely inspecting, everyone has dirt in their paint. Unless you are dropping 25k on your paint job you probably have dirt in your paint. Even some of those do too. Once you paint you see everything in everyone's paint job All said an done with a jet glo conventional system it was 7k or so, this includes paying nephews for labor and buying so much stuff you never thought you needed. I scrubbed so much light surface corrosion off the plane with scotch brite pads and what not. I'd invest in them before their profit is published... BUT at the end of the day I didn't trust a cheaper place would clean the metal to the detail level I wanted and I didn't want to spend the 25k and wonder if they did it all correctly either. As someone that spends millions on contractors every year I have trust issues on quality anymore. I never painted anything in my life with a spray gun, just several years of art school and supposedly I'm an artist of sorts. The painting wasn't that hard till I did the white. That got a little overwhelming. Sherwin Williams was an epic pain in the ass and I'll never use them ever again. There was one dude named Fernando that was a huge help but the entire rest of the organization was worthless. I could write a book on what I'd do different knowing what I know now. It's not that anything I did was wrong, there are just so many more ways that are easier. Overall lots of long nights. Wake up at 5am, go to work and go straight to the hangar after. Work till 10ish and go to bed. that was my life since December. I'm a grinder so as wore out as I was with my wife telling me to take a break I kept going till it was done. Now I plan to fly and work on my golf swing. I'll be doing the interior next winter and a panel sometime down the road if I don't move on to faster planes.
-
Would I still go back and do this if I knew what it took? Yeah, It was something I really wanted to do. Would I do another airplane? Hell no... but then again, I wanna build a skybolt and I'll probably paint that one. But that will be 5+ years down the road.

I have a gallery I put on here, not sure how to get to them tho. One day I'll but something together but I am not a pictures person. My wife is like the paparazzi and it was really hard for me to remember to take pictures along the way. She avoided helping on this project at all cost lol
-
I did. Thank you
-
Just kidding. She's all done tho. A few flaws here and there that I'll have to buff and airbrush but overall I'm pretty proud of what I accomplished by myself. It was a monumental task but I'm still happy I did it.

I never knew there was a floor gear position indicator...lol

since I'm connecting my tail light tonight without the strobe (doing that when I redo the interior). This whole relay or adding light doesn't seem to be explained for simple minded folk like myself. Anyone have pictures and detail of what they did? How dim is the light? Is it so dim you can't tell it's on? All my lights are adjustable inside, does that not matter?

Reading through all this has thoroughly convinced me that I don't want to install one of these myself. What's it cost to buy and have the 900 installed typically?

First Post and Several Questions
JayMatt replied to PrairieFlyer's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
dad gum....! I don't know too many pilots or females in that size range. Most pilots are small people. Probably because the fastest and cheapest way to more useable load is to lose weight. I carry 4 in my J all the time. Worst case I've let 5 gallons out each side -

Are pilots going to be replaced by AI?
JayMatt replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Would the AI opt to land on the river like sully? Artificial intelligence isn't some alien brain. It's just programmed code. there are plenty of situations in airplanes where you have to take X risk vs B risk and it will have been impossible to pre program that unknow feature into AI. If "russians" can hack our elections and companies and whatever else they could certainly hack an airplane and pile drive it right into a crowd of politicians. On second thought... yeah lets get AI airplanes on board asap please -
Is that a one type fits all antenna? Or am I supposed to track down exactly which one it is and make sure its the right type? I do have an old 3 something with the green and black screen and a 430. Guess I just saw all the other responses. I have a status installed now so I wonder if I even need the antenna anymore. I'll have to get it checked out I guess

JayMatt replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
as best I can tell skimming the thread, no one mentioned hacking. I won't live to see the day I fly in a plane without a human pilot. I understand it can be done but I know more about computers than the average person and I'd never trust one to that extent. computers and code are all built by other humans and quality and workmanship are all but gone these days.
