  1. I have read more than one report of baggage doors coming open in flight that were not locked. One explained some substantial damage to horizontal stabilizer. I hope no one ever has to crawl out of baggage door but you are supposed to be able to tear off the plastic cover and pull the emergency latch out to open from inside. I always lock my baggage door as that is where my border collies sleep. I have replaced the original ignition key switch. Now I have 2 similar keys on my key ring.
  2. I have my plane insurance broker list the hangar owners as additionally insured which makes the the owners happy and my insurer just needs the name of owner and their address with no additional costs so far to my policy.
  3. AOPA December 2023 Dr Brent Blue’s Oxygen is Oxygen great article. Oxygen on board is not just for flying over Rocky Mts. Do it yourself can be convenient and reasonable.
  4. Thank you for posting this.
  5. Congratulations nice plane I was following on Comptroller. You did well enjoy your ride.
  6. Found 340 oxygen plug rated to 3000 psi from western enterprises sold by airgas and advance tools. Appears could seal exit of tanks or trans filler lines. Chain & Plug Assemblies, Plug Assembly, 3,000 psi, Oxygen, Brass Features: One and two-piece assemblies provide gas-tight sealing | CGA nut and blind nipple (plug) combination Testing And Approvals: Meet all CGA Specifications for Sealing Manifolds and Cylinders $9.56 airgas $25..10 Low cost enough to use as safety seals for your portable or supply tank.
  7. Thanks for all the good information. I am in process of exploring what is needed. The fill up place in town has to ship my oxygen tank to St. Louis when they have enough to fill the truck. Airgas says 2 weeks or more. At least that is what they quoted me. I am in process of buying one tank and have a trans filler coming that can use 2 tanks. I have just bought a Trans filler for one tank. An extra tank , or buying only the extra tank valve, or having an in line valve, or plug made might keep me from buying a 3rd tank. I have not seen a reasonable alternative for in-line shutoff with needed connecting hardware. Also I may have another source for oxygen but he is mostly retired and not likely to continue and may stop working altogether One will do me for a while but seems like waste to have to send it back with 700 or 1000 psi although that maybe cost of the business. FBO or other suppliers seem to be shorting the 2200 psi the tanks hold but maybe they just can’t keep full tanks as they use them to top off and takes some out of the system each time they are used.
  8. Novice question about cascade oxygen tanks. When you decide to take an oxygen line tank off line, say you have 2 tank connections or more, and you remove the low tank to be filled later there appears to be no inline valve separating the two tanks. So do you need to disconnect the 2 tank system and replace it with single tank trans filler , just not use it until the empty cylinder comes back, or just have extra cylinder and valve so you can continue to use the remaining source tank until the low cylinder is filled?
  9. Great advice. No substitutes for looking plane over scouring the logs yourself or have someone help you and flying it.
  10. Any recent Pilot Reports for this Mooney Service Center?
  11. I was trying to go through scuba shop and not sure why they were not more responsive I had no idea were to take it. FBO was not assisting me or did not where to go. Air gas distribution center has to send them out for inspection and filling. Gave a long time frame to service. They also take some time to inspections and to get oxygen will only do it for truck load. They have to fill medical oxygen in St. Louis. I finally asked the scuba shop were they we going and found a shop that will test my portable for $45 and do a large cylinder for $100. They mostly do fire extinguishers, fire fighting equipment, and few scuba tanks. Did not see any other tanks for planes. Air gas said they will fill tanks I own for my own use. Have not got a price yet. At least it seems doable. I have been relying on others and was ignorant of the process. My second possible source is friend does a lot welding and machine type work for me. He has many large tanks in his shop and he is mostly retired.
  12. Having issues to get portable O2 tank filled or inspected. Going to work through this. Inflation hit my filling station. Was free as courtesy years ago. Next $20 for 20 cubic feet, then $40 per bottle now $128. Geez I have some large filling O2 tanks available but they are 1200 miles from home base. Looking at Mountain high site their cascade equipment is expensive but I do like their stuff. Their TR 95 cylinder transfer system and inter-coupling kit CIC-540 looks like good quality.
  13. Any direct experience with IFR use of C2000 and GPS 175. Spruce excerpt: The SBAS/WAAS-certified GPS receiver can allow you to fly GPS-guided LPV glidepath instrument approaches down to as low as 200’, greatly expanding your operational capability. You can also access newer lateral performance (LP) and all area navigation (RNAV) approaches. Precise course deviation and roll steering outputs can be coupled to our GFC™ 500 and GFC 600 autopilots as well as select third-party autopilots so that IFR flight procedures such as holds, NextGen radius-to-fix (RF) legs and missed approaches may be flown automatically. In addition, the GPS 175 navigator lets you create and execute custom holding patterns over an existing waypoint or user-defined waypoint.
  14. Geez I’ve got a lot to learn. It is hard to accept what took days now seems to take weeks or months… or hear sorry to busy to help. Maybe I should start by giving SM a name like I do my orphaned calves. Mechanics should get a kick out of that.
  15. GTR 20 remote nav/com for G3X. On Garmin site.
  16. Not on mine the key is specific to the card that I plug into image mate. You have to give the key to them every time you do a download from the website. I use older computer specifically saved to use with cd reader. Delete the database on the computer every time before uploading. I believe my sequence is download current database for my subscription by newer MAC onto a large compact disc. Take the compact disc to the older computer with CD reader. Save the database to old computer. Insert the old database card into imagemate reader. Make sure the old database is wiped off my old computer. download the data base on the card. Pull out expired card disc from KlN 94. Takes 2 cards this way. Plug in updated card to KLN 94. Allow the card update to load into the KLN 94, it take a few minutes . I often have my battery charger plugged in with avionics on or you can just fly away VFR and allow it to update. The procedures are on the website at least that is how I got them years ago. It is smooth process but does require an extra older computer, compact disc reader-writer and a least flash card. As I understand you can just order the updated flash card yourself and have them updated, at lease that was possible before. I believe they require you to send I the image mate card to them because they are rare to find now. 336 offer seems very generous. I don’t understand it but older computers are rare now. It is not so expensive if purchased by the packages vs one card at a time. I believe the packages go to 24 months or more.
  17. My temperature gage does this until it gets mid range.
  18. I really appreciate the basic med and believe all private pilots should support expansion. Some controllers do not like to deal with private pilots but I believe they are mostly talking about those not on flight plans complicating issues in busy air space. Here in mid west most of our controllers and pilots are great and courteous.
  19. Had experience even in Central Missouri. I thought was we had a low cloud layer so turned on pitot heat? Then realized it was probably smoke from wild fires. Could not see horizon. Reporting needs to improve to provide awareness to pilots. Concern for visual locating other planes .
  20. It’s been a long time sInce I flew commercial . Never had issue with pilots, landing or stewards on major air lines. Rude passengers that elbowed their way took over the adjoining seats were mitigated by helpful stewards that found me another seat. Still the parking , waiting, checking and other passengers made it terrible. Mooney is best.
  21. After short flight I did the left cowl flap release with top cover off, drain overnight, and 1 quart zip lock with couple hand towels under the filter. No mess. Couple teaspoons oil leaked on towels. Kept filter in the bag. Took my time unscrewing filter and kept stretching the bag up over the filter mount. Oil is too clean to read dip stick. My quick release drain is a little different. Push it in releases, push again and it backs out and shuts off. No turning to open or shut. Drain has rounded lip that secures the hose tightly. Drain takes internal diameter 5/8 inch clear plastic hose I got at Menards. Also put on plastic 5/8 inch connector with two males ends to hang up after it drains out to store till next time. I appreciate the good advice.
  22. Since plane is in a private hangar that does not need to be shuttled I am considering using drain thru the right side cowl flap with cam lock released and letting it drain over night after flying. Then hopefully most of the filter oil will drain back to engine then remove filter with shop rags under the attachment point. I tried a plastic bag once. It was still messy. Thank you for all the suggestions. I try it again.
  23. It has a push stop easy drain. So are you taking oil filter off from above with bottom cowl attached? I did read where can access drain with cam lock released and left cowl flap down. Times I tried to get filter off with rags still had some oil dripping.
  24. I was back reading old discussions about oil change intervals. My local mechanic is not a fan a changing oil prior to annual, at least on my 1994 M20 J. I am running about 50 hours annually. I tried it a couple times and with electric cows flaps lowering the bottom cowl off while leaving bottom cowl screws attached. This does not work well for me and was wondering about not taking bottom cowl off or technic of lowering it without dropping. The other issue I had problems with is tightening the safety wire correctly. I have the pliers needed but getting it snug was a problem?
