  3. I think this thread is kinda giving you a reality check, both on what sort of plane to look for as your first purchase, and how you can realistically expect to operate it. Regularly flying a single engine turbo piston in the 20s? Probably not going to happen, this is a different kind of flying than you're used to. And your main plan for that K model seemed to be avionics upgrades. That's backwards, you first need to find out if you even have a good airframe and good engine before sinking money into marginal upgrades. A $50k panel does you no good yoked to a $0 engine. With that said, you seem very open to learn so I think you're going to figure all this out. I might suggest a C, E, or F model first, using that to get used to ownership and learning how to maintain and operate your own plane, taking note of how it fits your mission (or not), and then use that experience to figure out what you really need and want, and go get it. Maybe you'll really need that turbo, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll realize what you really want is a pressurized single or twin to more easily access the flight levels, or maybe you'll end up with a lovely J instead. I know some will tell you to buy the most plane you can afford but in your case, you already know a lot about a certain kind of flying, so I think a starter plane might make sense for you as a training environment, and the lower purchase price will help lower your risk a bit. But keep in mind: if you go this route, be very judicious about upgrading a starter plane, because you won't get all the money you spent back when you sell. For a starter plane like this, prioritize one that is regularly flying, and fly the heck out of it. Do NOT make the mistake of upgrading avionics, paint, or interior right away, which will only lead to extended downtime and not flying. This is a test run for a new lifestyle, so get a plane that flies regularly, do the same, and sell it once you've identified whatever Step 2 is going to be. Just one man's opinion, YMMV.

I mean, that sounds pretty voluntary to me. They developed a fix, issued Service Bulletins, and put press releases out about it. What more is Garmin supposed to do, take over the FAA so it can unilaterally issue ADs? You seem to be suggesting Garmin didn't cooperate, is there any evidence of that?
  8. I think it’s clear from both my ad and the manufacturer’s website I linked that these covers are not designed for hail and are represented as winter covers. If they protected from hail I would have said so and set an appropriately higher price. @Norian please feel welcome to PM me with any questions.

  12. I lack the knowledge to explain it, that’s why I said to call Don. He told me it’s missing a diode on the field terminal that causes this and it is a very common issue. He sent me the diode and a diagram, but I didn’t understand the diagram and it never got installed. Now I’ve misplaced the diode!

  14. Hoping someone here can use these now that I'm selling my plane. Includes covers for both wings and both horizontal stabilizers. Each has straps to secure them to each surface, and there are additional straps for connecting the left wing cover to the right wing cover, and the two tail covers to each other, so they will stay in place. Just in time for fall/winter! Aero Covers' pricing for a brand new set starts at $740. This used set in very good condition is offered for $450. Shown on an M20J but should fit other M20 models as well. Available for free pickup in San Diego. Exchange/delivery at various SoCal airports is negotiable, or ship for $50.   17. It’s the best way if you’re at those lower altitudes and don’t mind slowing down for the speed restriction. If you cruise higher than that and aren’t landing locally, it doesn’t make much sense to descend just to use it, and you’ll probably need to slow down during that descent to comply with the restriction. I also find LASFR tends to have a lot of training traffic that I have to pass or maneuver around, and few pilots if any actually stay on the radial like they’re supposed to so you have to keep your head on a swivel. I don’t enjoy it. It’s better for slower Pipers and Cessnas, it’s not a great fit for better performing planes unless no one else is using it. Fewer people use the ATC-cleared transitions, which is why I use them. You’re definitely right about the controllers, I’ve never been denied services using one of the transitions. And if he’s only passing through to go to San Diego he’s better off staying higher.
  18. Yes, exactly. And then ForeFlight will translate that into GPS coordinates if you’re entering it as a waypoint. If you put it directly into the flight plan page (FPL) this is what you’ll get: P.S. If you look up the LA Special Flight Rules chart, you can probably guess based on all this what the “LASFR” user waypoint is.
  19. The coordinates were how ForeFlight interpreted it, but I originally entered something like LAX/123/10 and then played with the distance until it ended up as a point just outside the Bravo. So it’s along the radial rather than just an eyeballed waypoint.
  20. They're user waypoints so you're not going to see anything close, they have to be custom-created. LACRNB (LA Coastal Route North Bound) = 33.75972ºN/118.24434ºW LACRSB (LA Coastal Route South Bound) = 34.11843ºN/118.52245ºW That ends up looking like this passing through:
