How to fix interior side panels (M20K/1980)
lotsofgadgets replied to NicoN's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Since you plan to pull the panels anyway, contact Bruce Jaeger and get his DIY interior repair kit. The kit contains self adhesive .016 aluminum to reinforce any panel cracks or loose screw holes. He has a very detailed step by step process to restore the panels to near new. I repaired several panels in my 1982 J this winter since I had the interior out to install the Avidyne and Stratus radios. I also replaced the lower sidewall panels with 1/16" kaidex plastic (Bruce's recommendation). http://justplaneradio.com/2018/02/the-mooney-avionics-upgrade-of-captain-dennis/ -
This is a great shot, Mav. I should be a photographer.

I replaced mine with Air Boss. They were in stock and I was quoted around $430 for the complete cap and harness. http://www.aeroinstock.com/p-27317-airboss-harness-yellow.aspx?keyword=10-821414-6r-e -
Avionics looking for a good home
lotsofgadgets replied to lotsofgadgets's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
only the KLN89b, ADF, and PS1000 intercom remain. -
For $250 they are reseting the unit for a 4cylinder and configuring the RPM ranges to match. Sandy at Horizon was a pleasure to work with and she figures it will be about 2 days to turn it around.

Update: Turns out the problem was with the tach drive cable. after removing both ends from the engine and gauge I noticed that the engine drive side was rounded and no longer engaging properly. I am going with Trailboss's suggestion of the Horizon P1000 as a permanent fix. I hanger neighbor has a used one he pulled from his Bonanza. Hopefully Horizon is willing to work with me to get the necessary paperwork and reset the limits. BTW, the tach drive covers are $90 from Lycoming, or $6 from Vans Aircraft.

no power to overhead lights 1980 M20K
lotsofgadgets replied to N231SM's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
My overheads quit working after my panel upgrade ('82 J) the problem turned out to be the disconnect plug in the tailcone. One of the pins wasn't making contact. Took the plug apart and reseated the pin. Works good now. -
I have on left, $100 + shipping and it is yours.

Flying home from Sun-N-Fun yesterday and my Tach started to act up and failed completely. Initially the RPM needle started bouncing from 2100 to 2600 RPM and progressively the range of bouncing expanded to 1500-2500. Eventually the needle simply quit and showed 0. The hour meter was continuing to increment, but at the end of the flight hobbs showed over 3hrs and tach was only 1.5. Does anyone have any experience with this type of failure? Any suggestions on how to confirm it is the tach and not the cable? It looks like 14 day lead from Spruce for a new one, anyone have a better source? 1982 M20J, IO-360 A3B6D.

I'm just going to upgrade the transponder........
lotsofgadgets replied to lotsofgadgets's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I wish I could say the same, but I will likely be revisiting the panel for an replacement Autopilot and some form of glass upgrade in the coming years. I'm hoping that with all the new announcements from Dynon, Aspen and even Garmin, it will be a race to the bottom for glass retrofits and autopilots. -

I am guessing you all know where this is headed...... My plan was to replace the KT76a with a Stratus ESGi since I didn't have any WAAS position source installed. Between the Superbowl Traffic/TFR's and the wonderful winter weather in Minnesota I scheduled the upgrade for the first week of February. The plan was to remove the KLN89b and install the new Stratus in it's place. I also figured it was a good time to remove the ADF. That would leave the center stack free for a future upgrades. What I didn't realize was how much work was required just to pull the those three radios and run new Coax for the WAAS antenna sorry for the upside down image, no matter what I did the the photo MooneySpace rotated it upside down (note to admin, please fix or add rotate controls) Rather than pay to put the panel back together now and redo it again in a year I bit the bullet and replaced almost everything. Avidyne AMX-240 Audio panel, IFD-550 and IFD-440 navigators, and the Stratus ESGi ADSB transponder. Good measure I installed a used Insight engine monitor too. In a major case of "while your in there" I also had the attitude gryo overhauled and the vacuum hoses replaced, carpets were ordered from SCS Interiors, and I ordered the DIY interior repair kit from Bruce Jaeger to spruce up the interior plastics. I may be broke now, but it is an amazing transformation. I can't wait to fly to SUN-N-FUN and actually file /G. I didn't realize how bad the old KX-170b's were getting until I was able to pickup up ATIS 60+ miles out.

Need a good King KT76 Tso transponder
lotsofgadgets replied to Skybrd's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have a working KT76A I just removed from my 201. make an offer. I pulled it for an ADSB upgrade to the Stratus ESGi. -
I bought a roof heating cable and taped it to the floor under the door using 4" gorilla tape. now all I have to do is plug in the cord to start the thawing process. I could also just connect it to the remote switch that runs the engine preheat. What I would do in the meantime is warm up several bottles of RV Anti Freeze and pour around the door seal. The warm glycol should break loose the existing ice and prevent it from refreezing right away. Once you get the door open I'd recommend using a heat gun to warm and dry the floor allowing you to tape down a heat cable. if you don't warm the concrete, the tape won't stick.

the MooneyFlyer has a decent spreadsheet on their website that can be tailored to suit your needs. http://themooneyflyer.com/Excel/AircraftStatusSheet.xlsx The app looks interesting, but can you back up/export the data? I currently use a combination of MyFlightbook to track the time based inspections(oil change, annual, pitot/static, etc) and a google spreadsheet for everything else. I am hoping that one day the MyFlightBook developer will expand the aircraft section to allow user defined reminders as this would create a one stop maintenance status check.
