  1. I’m surprised I’m saying this too, but way to go FAA!
  2. Reminds me of a patient I had once who accidentally drove his truck off the road at night. He said he was just driving and then noticed how beautiful the stars looked all around him…seconds before realizing he had left the road and was about to crash.
  3. Is this the Texas version of “my airport is better than yours?” Whatever it is, it’s quite amusing. Great study break from my AGI written.
  4. That actually seems like a great idea. Does anyone know what bulb was supposed to be in a 2000 Ovation taxi light?
  5. The windshield sprayer does NOT run continuously. It is a momentary switch. With the TKS going the prop sprayer will get the windshield wet but the windshield spray bar is separate.
  6. I’m not sure if you were the target of that post but many people do show up to the shop after an annual, hop in the plane and fly away. A couple of years ago I picked up my plane after the annual and spent almost an hour going through everything and asking questions, then flying around the airport for half an hour and then flying home the next day. I apologized to the shop for having to “trust, but verify” and they told me “I wish everyone did that. Most people just gas up the plane and take off.”
  7. I agree with what was said above. In the Ovation the minimum icing speed is 120 KIAS so I sometimes have to remind myself not to go slower. And minimal (or no) flaps for landing. TKS is pretty awesome. I just made a very uneventful flight a couple of days ago that I would never have attempted without ice protection. Having fluid at your destination is nice as well.
  8. You definitely want FIKI. I wouldn’t have flown yesterday without it. If I could find a partner for a 414 or 421 I’d sell my plane in a heartbeat. They’d have to be the kind of partner that likes paying bills but doesn’t like to fly much, though.
  9. I’m 5’6” (and a half!) and don’t have any issues with the higher panel. It’s kind of nice to have room for all my toys. My son can’t see over the panel unless he sits on a cushion but he’s only 5’ tall. I think you’ll be fine.
  10. You just made my night. I’d totally forgotten about that guy.
  11. In case anyone wants to sign the petition: https://www.change.org/p/support-reid-hillview-airport-and-improve-a-vital-community-asset?utm_content=cl_sharecopy_13988809_en-US%3Av10&recruiter=703298624&recruited_by_id=57a99d70-1683-11e7-88ef-ad5fbcefcdd9&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&share_bandit_exp=initial-13988809-en-US&share_bandit_var=v2 Just don’t accidentally sign the one from the airport trying to ban 100LL nationally. On an unrelated note, anyone have experience with GAMI’s 100UL?
  12. Is there a way to link this thread to the one about our insurance rates going up? Seems like they might be related…
  13. No offense, but you’re either bragging about your exceptionally poor decision-making ability or a troll (or both?). I guess if you’re serious about this then make sure your life insurance is paid up, have fun and don’t take anyone with you. Maybe get a couple of GoPros and document the whole thing so the Canadian version of the NTSB won’t have to waste too much time and money figuring out what’s happened.
  14. And the fact that you’re selling your G1000 plane probably has nothing to do with your strong opinions on the subject and need to “prove” everyone else wrong who disagrees with you. As I said before, I’m glad you’re happy with it. Not everyone buys a plane every year or two so some people prefer to invest in a platform that is more “future proof” than the G1000. Especially from brand that’s essentially no longer producing airplanes. If you’re switching planes every few years it probably doesn’t really matter what you buy today so maybe being locked into a nice, slightly outdated platform isn’t such a bad thing.
  15. Unless you’re using a Sodastream to make Italian sodas in flight you usually don’t have to worry about a CO2 leak… My son is starting up his flight training again and I’m giving him a Stratux (to a avoid airplanes and weather), pulse ox (to avoid hypoxia), CO monitor (since I don’t trust those dots) and a foreflight subscription. I think if everyone used this stuff (and I think most of us do) then we could avoid a handful of preventable accidents every year. He has a sodastream as well and can make a pretty refreshing Italian soda— just not in the airpalne.
  16. Tough situation. Did you have a pulse ox? Not knowing what was going on and having those acute symptoms I’d probably try to get on the ground sooner rather than later. Who knows if it’s a virus, hypoxia, heart attack or CO poisoning while you’re in the air. Did the virus have a name? There’s been a lot of nasty RSV going around.
  17. It’s only going to get worse once the unleaded aviation fuel is approved. Right now you can make the argument there’s no alternative and GA is vital to the community, etc. When there’s an unleaded option that’s only $4/gal more it’ll be hard to get public sympathy for rich airplane owners wanting to save money by poisoning the air. I wish Continental made a 350 HP turbo diesel that would fit on the Ovation. With 89 gal you could fly for a long time.
  18. I’ll buy it from you if you’re not using it. My son is starting up flying lessons again so I’m trying to get him his own gear. He’s learning in 172s because the Mooney gear isn’t robust enough for his carrier landings.
  19. I agree that G1000 was modern in 2003, but that was a few years ago... I’m familiar with the G1000 and have flown behind one many times- i just didn’t buy one. I actually seriously considered a couple of G1000 Ovations when I bought my plane and decided not to do it specifically for the reasons I’ve mentioned. Frankly; I would have preferred the lower panel but I didn’t want to be trapped with that system and no clear upgrade path when it becomes obsolete. It sounds like you love your G1000 and your G1000 loves you. That’s great. I’m very happy for you. That still doesn’t make it modern or upgradable. Sorry I stuck a nerve with that statement.
  20. Wow. Just wow. I think @EricJ may understand the life and death consequences of making the wrong decisions better then you give him credit for. I don’t think he’s the one whose response comes of as livid… A highly intelligent and skilled professional read your entire lengthy treatise (at least twice!) and gave you constructive feedback (which you specifically asked for) in a subject in which he is an expert. He did this FOR FREE. And you’re complaining about him and criticizing him. Seriously?! I’m sorry if not everyone thinks this is The Final Word in engine management. This subject has been discussed EXTENSIVELY here and in other places by people who are experts in the field. Many of us have taken the APS course. I apologize if you’re not getting the reception you expected but maybe you can take a few deep breaths, take yourself a little less seriously and thank the people who are actually helping you out. For free. On their own time.
  21. Do you prefer PayPal or Venmo?
  22. I would be interested in the price of upgrading your G1000 to any of the new features now available on the Garmin units or the Nxi. I can Think of Smart Glide in addition to the features mentioned in this article: https://www.flyingmag.com/g1000-nxi-piston-aircraft-retrofit/ I will concede that you are correct that the only issue is price. Now that the Mooney factory is on sale I assume if you bought the factory and sent a few million $$$ over to Garmin they would be happy to certify the Nxi upgrade for you. I’m not as rich as you are so I’m paying $12k to swap my G500 display out for a G500Txi so it’s a slightly cheaper upgrade path for me. But as the kids say these days “you do you.”
