Thanks. I love Mooneyspace (and Clarence). Problem solved in under an hour!

Does anyone have a pdf copy of this? I have “160” which I’m assuming is an older version. Tried calling and emailing Mooney but no joy.

Surface sheet corrosion treatment

I think you’re the only one who’s laughing. To everyone else, you’re coming across as someone who had a narcissistic injury and lacks the executive function to not keep replying. Hopefully that is more developmentally appropriate language for you. -
Oleo Struts conversion for Mooney?
ilovecornfields replied to DrTimcat's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
@aviatoreb is a pretty smart guy. I’m not just saying that because we went to the same college and he has a PhD in a subject that baffles me but because I’ve had several discussions with him and he has me convinced. When all the backtracking and caveats start then maybe it’s time to let it go. It sounds like you’re admitting that they do something to stall speed and that “something” doesn’t increase speed. The only remaining option is that they decrease stall speed- let’s say by some number between 1-10 (an order of magnitude range is good enough, right?) Why don’t we just leave it and talk about something else that we can all have an intelligent discussion on? Like lean-of-peak touch-and-goes in a crosswind with no flaps? -
Oleo Struts conversion for Mooney?

You may have forgotten that this is an internet discussion - your extensive professional and personal experience on this exact subject is completely irrelevant. Everyone gets to express their opinion and demand to have it treated as fact. -

As someone who has actually installed VGs on a Mooney and checked the stall speed before and after I can assure you that they do what the manufacturer says they do. -

But if everyone gets vortex generators than I won’t be special anymore! -
I don’t think we’re disagreeing. From what you posted above “the facility is unable to safely provide published air traffic services” SBA TRACON and LA Center are two different facilities. When SBA went ATC Zero, LA Center (a different facility) took over some of their services. I don’t think everything just automatically becomes Class G. Maybe @kortopates knows the answer. I haven’t been able to stump him yet, but it doesn’t deter me from trying.
-
I’m not sure that’s entirely true. I know in some cases they route people around the airspace controlled by the facility that is ATC Zero but I think in other cases other facilities take over. In the example in Opposing Bases and I think in the SBA example other facilities took over. LA Center was providing radar services in SBA’s airspace, just not flight following.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be obscure. There have been several high profile ATC Zero events in the last 15 months. Opposing Bases (ATC podcast) has had some interesting discussions on it as well. Apparently it’s not very easy to control someone else’s airspace. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/march/23/training-tip-when-atc-goes-to-zero https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/november/25/atc-zero-events-in-resurgence https://www.aopa.org/training-and-safety/air-safety-institute/safety-notices/safety-notice-atc-zero-events

That’s really amazing! We need more guys like that in aviation.

As a follow up they were back the next day when I flew back (IFR). I’m sure LA Center was sad to give that airspace back.

Vortex generators on an Ovation?
ilovecornfields replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I have to admit I haven’t lost any sleep over the loss of my “formerly laminar flow wings.” I don’t think I lost any airspeed, either. I do get a smile every time I land in a strong crosswind and feel like I have more rudder authority than I could ever ask for. Or when I land at a short strip and think “wow, that was easy!” I’m sure if I crash in a field somewhere I won’t be sad that the decreased energy (v squared, remember?) makes it more likely that I’ll survive. To each their own… -
Vortex generators on an Ovation?
ilovecornfields replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I think @aviatoreb has experience removing his, but I haven’t tried to remove mine. I have a 2000 FIKI O2 with the 310 HP STC so it’s a little slower than the non TKS Ovations. I didn’t notice a change in cruise speed and according to the VG company they don’t affect the FIKI certification. Crosswind landings are WAY easier, though. I have noticed that my wing looks 200% more awesome, though. -
New iPad Mini announced today 9/14/21
ilovecornfields replied to LANCECASPER's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Yeah. I called Garmin about this “feature” and they told me I can just make PDFs out of my checklists and use the document viewer. They didn’t seem excited about adding the checklists backs. The built-In AHRS is also kind of lame (returned the 1st, 2nd is just as bad). The screen is nice, though and I still have checklists on my GTN 750. -
I think it’s a little further from LA than Catalina. Different population.
-
It’s too close to LA so all the weekend warriors go fly there to impress their girlfriends/mistresses and end up making fools of themselves.

Asked for flight following from the tower today. Told “Unable, Santa Barbara is ATC Zero. Try LA Center on departure.” Took off and had a very brief conversation with LA Center. Me: LA Center Mooney 12345 ,VFR Request LA Center: Mooney 12345, unable. Me: That was fun. I was eventually able to find another sector that was willing to give me flight following. For the way home tomorrow, if they’re still ATC Zero is it better to file IFR or just not get flight following?

I flew to Catalina when I was 15 once. I was flying my dad’s Arrow with an instructor and my dad said I could go anywhere except Catalina so guess what I said to the instructor when he asked me where I wanted to go? I even bought a bottle of sand labeled “Own your own piece of Catalina beachfront property” to bring home as a souvenir. I had about 100 hours at that time and don’t recall it being a particularly challenging place to land. I was also 10 years away from fully developing my frontal lobe so I see things differently now. Good call for seeking our additional training even though nothing requires it (except common sense, good judgement and a desire not to wreck your plane). Seems like a nice way to spend the day flying there and back with a CFI.

When things start getting complicated ...
ilovecornfields replied to donkaye's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Nothing wrong with using the resources available to you to ensure a safe outcome. I can copy pretty quickly and always have the airport diagram out and figure out what my expected route will be. Sometimes I still screw it up. Last week I turned the wrong way down the right taxiway which the controller was kind enough to quickly point out. No harm, no foul. In an ideal world we’d all be perfect but in the real world its better to be safe than sorry. -
Latest project in anticipation of going back to school tomorrow. We decided on this one instead of the #2 choice which was “I spent 10 days in quarantine and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.” He made a shirt for everyone who had to stay home.

Greg saved my butt in a pre-buy and I would absolutely take it to him. It was even a plane he had previously worked on (I know, big “no no”) but he found some serious issues that had developed in the interval and would have cost me thousands of dollars. I saw the plane a couple of years later and the new owner had put almost $100k into it (new engine, panel, etc..) and was still having issues. He sold it a few months later.
