  1. Any chance do you have pictures of your installation or part numbers of what you used?
  2. Ok, so whose the best and the right price? I'm looking to install a GFC500 in the next few months in my M20J. Looking for places primarily in California, Nevada, or Arizona. Thanks, Bruce
  3. Geesh, just 3-4 years ago on Spruce, these were about $101 each.
  4. Another question. Any recommendations for cables and connectors? I got my 650e in a couple of days ago and I'm strategizing on how I want to connect them (wiring and connectors). I'm removing a "legacy" set of wing tip lights. A nav light with 12V and grnd and and three pin/wire strobe. So I'll have 5 wires (ones a redundant ground) on the aircraft side and 4 wires on the light side (the Whelen 650e). And I may need a bit of wire to make sure everything reaches (there's plenty their now I could scavenge but...) I'll be removing an older Whelen strobe power supply (looks like a A490TCF). Obviously I desire a clean, FAA approved, installation and I would like to have connectors on each end that I can easily disconnect and reconnect should the need arises. Whelen sells 2 and 3 pin cable its and connectors. However, it seems like I really ought to have some sort of 4 pin connector. I'd let the sync float for now, but may use it later. Thanks, Bruce
  5. Absolutely. Before starting this thread I searched "LED" "Strobe" "wing tip" on Mooneyspace and not one of the cross threads that folks have posted above was listed! Would have saved a lot of time and electrons. Bruce
  6. I read the thread about dimming the landing gear light but it never really answered the "how to keep the gear light working as designed" question. Any leads?
  7. I vowed that I would "go LED" once (or as) my lights burn out. Preflighting my bird last night I noticed my right wingtip strobe is in-op. My stats: 1984 M20J, 12V, wing tip lights are embedded in the wing tip (curved wingtips?) So I've been looking at the Whelen Orion 650E (embedded) and replacing both wingtip lights at once. I know about by passing the strobe module/power supply. But, are there any "gotchas" like you must run all new wire out to the wing, or add a circuit so that the lighting works right? It looks too easy... Also, any recommendations for other certified lighting solutions? Thanks, Bruce
  8. I have a KAP 150 autopilot. Just yesterday when I went to heading hold I noticed that the "HDG" light didn't illuminate (it definitely worked during pre-flight). The function still worked as it followed my heading bug but it didn't light up even after a couple of autopilot disconnects and a reset of the trim power. What are my options to fix this? (and yes I'm even considering 'GFC-500' as an option (-; ). Bruce
  9. Agreed, they look like the original control links to me.
  10. That is similar feedback to what I got from the Atlanta FSDO office about 2 years ago -- never mind they stated it would take months to years to go through the process of declaring the STC "abandoned" I keep circling back to my best option being getting a letter from Mr. Coons simply stating I have permission to use the STC. Bruce
  11. But that doesn't give me permission to install on my tail number. This process doesn't get around FAR Part 91.403. Essentially it would be "great, I have the engineering data --- now what? Start the process to generate my own STC?" I think I'm better off seeing if I can get a field approval as my next step.
  12. Again -- an "abandoned STC" doesn't help me -- just read through this lengthy thread. It will not give me approval to install it on my aircraft when I never had the approval in the first place. Getting it declared "abandoned" only allows the FAA to provide the engineering data to current STC holders for the purpose of continued airworthiness. The FAA can't give away something they don't own -- in this case the "rights" to the design and the "rights" to sell it still belong to Mod Works. Per 91.403: A person must not alter an aircraft based on a supplemental type certificate unless the owner or operator of the aircraft is the holder of the supplemental type certificate, or has written permission from the holder.
  13. Just an update from my "quest" to get one of the Mod Works STCs on my Aircraft. I attempted to get written permission from Mr. Coons and have received both of my attempts returned with "return to sender" or "unable to deliver" stickers on the envelopes. When I get home I will post the addresses I used (both in Punta Gorda, FL). Again I request help in trying to get a valid address -- in theory my easiest avenue would be to "simply" get written permission. To rehash my dilemma: I physically have a set of the Mod Works low profile doors. I'd like to install them on my Mooney but they were sold to another Mooney pilot and intended for his Mooney. I have already accomplished the brake caliber rotation STC from LASAR and all I want to do is install these doors on my aircraft. My next step may be to pursue a field mod but that has it's own issue. Bruce
  14. I guess you can get rid of that 1 pound brick in the aft fuselage that powers the light/strobe with the led. Once I have that light (or any of my nav/position/strobes for that matter) burn out I'm replacing them with LEDs and saving a whole 3 pounds. I keep waiting -- it's been 5 years since I bought the aircraft -- I'm still waiting. However, I keep telling people that if weight savings was the goal, it'll be cheaper to get lipo. Bruce
  15. My favorite tool I hope to never use again. It's my Rapco vacuum pump wrench. Removed my vacuum pump and good riddance!
  16. You've have hit the nail on the head as to my dilemma. Except that I don't have the STC for my tail number. I have the parts from someone else's airplane and some Xerox copies of what I think was the STC for his or her tail number. Reference FAR 91.403 (d). In theory, all I need is written permission from the STC owner to install them. I've already spoke with the Atlanta FAA folks and they gave me the summary that you so well expressed in your post. It's certainly NOT as easy as some imply -- even if I get the STC declared "abandoned" I still can't install it on my airplane because I never purchased nor do I have written permission to install them on my aircraft. The "abandoned" status allows you to get the engineering data maintain or rebuild the STC on your own aircraft IF you already have had permission to use it. This allows for the continued airworthiness of those aircraft with out having to be forced to demod if the part(s) becomes unservicable. Any one have a line on Tim or Lisa Coons' mailing address? You can send via private message if you like. Bruce
  17. After all this, does anybody have an address to write to for permission to use one of the Mod Works STCs? In my case I physically have the Lo Profile door panels but I don't have the STC for my aircraft. There's an address for Mod Works on the FAA webpage for this STC but I'm sure they are no longer at their Punta Gorda Airport address. Any help tracking down who I can write to would be appreciated. Bruce
  18. My right mag was just overhauled and tested as part of this ordeal.
  19. Checked, double checked, triple checked. It's not set to 25deg at least by the DIP switches or light codes.
  20. Continue reading to step 30. You're to keep adjusting by 1 degree increments until to you reach the POH limits. Ironically, my A&P got to 25deg TDC on the right mag when the mag drops were within POH limits.
  21. So how far from the engine spec of 20degree advance of TDC are you allowed to go in order to match the SureFly?
  22. Back in the Spring (2022) I had a Surefly installed but have only been struggling with excessive mag drops since my annual last month. I noticed that Surefly now (not sure how old this is) troubleshooting guide for this. Link below: This seems like it would do the trick, but I question that you'd just adjust the standard mag timing to get it meet the POH criteria for mag checks. How would anything but setting your standard mag to 20deg or 25deg (depending on your engine) be acceptable or legal? I don't mean to restart the whole 20 vs 25 deg TDC debate but this procedure from Surefly seems a like a head scratcher to me. Anyone know if Lycoming blesses this process? (I guess I'll message them and see and report back). https://www.surefly.aero/_files/ugd/f0684a_b1912ac854234753a1e424fc07665db5.pdf
  23. That first instructor should give up his/her certificate.
