Too bad it's not right before or after the MAPA PPP @ KSMX. But that's in early April.
-
Yeah, I flagged the duplicates to! And I'd I agree with @Pinecone that Mooney Summit doesn't cut it (unless it is directly tied to mooneyspace). I vote for Seminars, Meetings & Fly-Ins that can be used for any kind of meeting, training or just a bunch of people saying they're going to all meet up next Sat. for breakfast on Nantucket, Orcas Is. Heard good things about Mooney Summit, but then there's also the MAPA Safety Foundation PPPs, AOPA & EAA Fly-Ins & Seminars, etc., etc.

Got the cash, but prefer to finance, where?
PeteMc replied to SilentT's topic in General Mooney Talk
I used Dorr Aviation over 30 years ago. So if they are still around that's saying something. And if you talk to them. Ask them why I didn't get an engraved keyring like @Pinecone got!!!!! ADDED: I went back and looked. I worked with Bob Howe. -
I was mentioning the sponges to a friend and he sent me a pic of his sponges in place. He has a 212 Trophy, but same place, same issue.
-
Probably all about where you parked. Friend of mine parked his Mooney give or take 200ft in front of where I was and had very little bird activity. I was not near the edge of the ramp or near trees, etc., but we had a lot of birds on our tails and trying to make nests. I have a red tail, so maybe that attracts them.
-
Yeah, they would have pulled all the inspection plates. But during nesting time it is remarkable, almost unbelievable, how fast some birds can build a BIG nest.
-
You don't have the opening in the back on your 252? Thought it was basically the same as my 231, but never looked. And you need to look way up into the tail, sometimes with a flashlight, and if you see anything then odds are the WHOLE tail is full of a nest. You'll need to open the inspection plate on the pilot side and see what's there. I washed the plane one evening and knew we were leaving early the next morning so I didn't put in my sponges. When I got there the next morning there was some grass and twigs in the visible. When I opened the inspection plate and started pulling stuff out, the WHOLE tail had already been filled. What I saw through the back was the top of the nest. I grabbed this off the Internet, looks like a J, but basically the same as my 231 and I'm assuming your 252. This is where you stuff the sponges on both sides to totally block off access (use soft sponges). If you park in a hangar and don't really think about it, put it on your checklist or put the sponges on top of everything so when you get to your destination and you're going to be parked outside, you'll remember.

Beware of buying anything on line. If you feel you do trust the person, STILL use PayPal with their protection plan!!!!

I haven't registered yet, but hope to make it to KSMX. So I'll see you and @amillet there.

Tight Landings, Take Offs, and Close Calls!
PeteMc replied to Tim-37419's topic in General Mooney Talk
I went into Elizabeth Field on Fishers Island, NY (0B8) years ago. It's showing 1,806' now and I don't think they've extended either Rwy (2,345' for the "long" Rwy). Sort of cheated though as there are ZERO issues with the trees at either end (or at least back then). And if you're landing 07, you come right across the water and over a tiny rising beach to the Threshold. But I was doing a lot of flying back then, including a lot of smaller strips. But I don't think I'd try that today without a lot of short field practice. -
I used to fly with John all the time when I lived back east. Any juice stories I can rib him about ?!?!

Tight Landings, Take Offs, and Close Calls!

Not prohibited, but my K POH specifically has a big CAUTION BOX followed by: Avoid sideslips with flaps extended and partial power (15-25 In Hg MP) applied. And I was told in various PPPs as @Fly Boomer said, it can disrupt the airflow by the elevator/rudder. So just one of those things you need to be aware of and realize what may be happening if the controls seem off. -

So you're saying the tip to make sure to carry plenty of survival gear and water for 3 days wasn't a real thing??? -
Foreflight Alternatives? Which EFB should I switch to?
PeteMc replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Kind of wish FF had bought them. Then they'd have a FF Lite Android version, which people have been asking about for years. And you just reminded me I hadn't update my FltPlan Go in a while... -

It is specifically say you passed the Satellite Reception or you passed the Transponder/ADS-B Reception? Since they do not require the Sat portion yet for most flights, I could see them not dinging anyone. And were you near a larger city where they do have a lot of ground stations? My guess is if you headed off over some of the vast wilderness you'd get some failed results. It will be a while, but when i get a chance I'll check the site and see if it shows any different results from the Satellite side of my GTX345D. -

Women's Air Race Classic - calling other Mooneys?
PeteMc replied to Becca's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Really??? You wanna go back and take another look. If you did, I bet you'd find I said.... "If I were still on the East Cost I would have gotten involved. To bad the race isn't on the "other" coast where I am now." And "involved" is not "crew" as far as I know. But then it could be! I could have been part of the "Ground Crew" "Pit Crew" "Line Crew" aka crew /kroo/ a group of people who work closely together -

Thanks for the Link! And I'm assuming it's just like the FAA's site, you don't need to be on a flight plan or "in the system" it is just reporting what it is receiving. Right? So next time I'm up by the border or maybe transitioning I'll send in a request and see what I get back. -

Yes, but can't men help on the Support Team? That's what I was replying to. -
One other thing to remember is that Mooneys DO NOT do well with a Bounce! It seems like a lot of prop strikes I hear about start with a bounce that someone tries to correct for and they end up porpoising between the mains and the nose wheel. So (as always) be primed for a Go Around. On a calm say and a long Rwy you might just add a little power to float a bit. But with a strong Xwind you may end up off in the bushes. When one Rwy was closed at my old Apt the strong gusty Xwinds in the winter months kept us guessing. I had one time that was pretty gusty and the "gust" went away when I was a few feet above Rwy and I dropped and bounced hard. So be ready for that lack of gust to drop you at the wrong moment. As for limits. Mine is to set up on Final and see how much rudder authority I have left. If I'm all the way in with nothing to add, then I'm going someplace else. I don't mind the gusts and the crabbing, etc. But if I can't keep the plane going where I want it to when I transition over the Rwy, then why am I bothering.

Do you have one at home or in the car? Before buying another one, just plug it in and watch the compass. Certainly you would not want to rest it up n the dash near the compass. And my other question would be, how strong is the magnet? I'd be more worried the phone would launch into the air and land who knows where. There was an Army (?) helicopter that crashed a while ago because the iPad fell down into the peddle mechanism.

Source for door leather strap/handle
PeteMc replied to AndreiC's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If you want to go the Aviation way. Just look up some interior shops and ask them if you send them the old one can they replace it. Otherwise, if you happened to drive by any car interior shop, you might ask them if they can do it with the same materials. (I'm not recommending this, of course. But I've heard rumors that this is probably what most people do.) First measure the distance between the screws and take a picture with the pieces still in place. Then for the local shop, just take in the pieces and they'll figure out the size. For the aviation interior shop in addition to the measurements of the screws and that picture of the pieces in place, just take another picture or the pieces on a table along side a ruler or tape measure. As for me... Mine broke a few flights before I dropped off the plane for a new interior. So I was spared the dilemma! -

I had asked this before, but don't remember seeing an answer. What version of the Stratus do you have and have you confirmed with Avidyne that it is a compatible unit with the latest Software upgrade? I only know there are differences, but know very little about the different units. And have they confirmed a minimum level of SW to work with their latest SW? Since there does not appear to be a massive uproar across all Avidyne groups, it seems local to your setup. Maybe the Stratus has an issue or the SW upgrade you got a while ago didn't load correctly and is corrupt in regard to connecting to your Status? Can you borrow a Stratus from anyone else at the Airport?
