How to discourage walkers on the runway?
PeteMc replied to wombat's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
TSA can require it based on where the airport is, number and size of planes, etc. The Apt I used to be at also apparently spent well over $100K (maybe it was $200K) to install high end Aircraft Cable and a high end padlock to EVERY tail tiedown to prevent theft.... Of course this was attached to the $10 tie down hook on most GA planes and no locks for the bigger jets that could actually carry a payload. -

I don't understand why that AIRPLANE keeps coming down to ruin our walk on this nice AIRPORT RUNWAY???.... -

Click on the three dots in the upper right of your message ( ... ) and then Edit. You should be able to rotate or flip it. -
How to discourage walkers on the runway?

Do they enter via a road or is the Airport open and they just walk in anywhere? If they walk in at a more confined area, put up some decent size sings they have to actually walk around that have some official sounding warning. AIRPORT RUNWAY, TAXIWAYS AND ADJACENT GRASS AREAS ARE NOT SAFE TO WALK ON. THESE SPACES ARE FOR AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS ONLY! LANDING AIRCRAFT MAY NOT SEE YOU AND CANNOT MANEUVER TO AVOID YOU!!! -
It's a pretty big debate and when I first got my Mooney I was taught to lock it. But as time went on and I read more and when to seminars, including PPPs, it started to emerge that the people that had a Baggage Door open in flight either admitted they probably didn't latch it properly or they were not sure if they latched it properly. And the number of Baggage Doors opening in flight seems to be VERY small. So there does not seem to be a reason to lock it. On the other side for NOT locking it is the "what if" you go down and are knocked out and the main door is blocked or jammed. If it happens to be a real 1st Responder, they probably have something to pry open the door or go through a window. But more times than not, the first person there is probably some living or driving by. Their only option might be the Baggage Door, but NOT if it's locked. NOTE: There are times when the Baggage Door latching mechanism actually breaks and both pins do not extend into the door frame. But that is easily discovered by the appropriate TUG on the Baggage Door. And locking won't really help if the pins did not fully extend. I learned this the hard way back when I was locking the door. (But no serious damage. Kept the speed down as I came around the pattern. Those hinges are pretty strong.)

Aspen Rate of Turn Indicator hard to see and follow
PeteMc replied to dfurst's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Same reason that after a short period of clocks switching to be only digital, there was a big move back to have a lot of clocks have both hands and numbers. Now I look for the Altitude Bug, but wish they had designed the tapes more like the combo clocks. Maybe with a circle around the Altitude with some bright dots. Or even just one dot for the Hundreds. -

I'll check it out next time I'm at the Airport. Interesting that it is not in their Pilot Guide, but then it wouldn't be the first time someone came up with some non standard name so you can't search for what you're really looking for. -
Aspen Rate of Turn Indicator hard to see and follow
PeteMc replied to dfurst's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I've never seen a option where I can increase the Airspeed or Altitude Fonts. And I don't know what the original Aspen had for Turn Rate, Inclinometer, Climb/Descent, etc. Yes, they made big changes in the Max. But the video mentions the hardware with a much better display and video card. Also a much better processor. But Font enlargement would be on the software side. So if there's something I've missed where is it? ADDED: I did just get the latest Software, so to make sure it wasn't a difference in my old SW and the latest I just went to the Aspen site and the Pilot Guide that says "NEW" next to it. Searched for "font" and "character" and there were zero entries. Searched for "size" and there were three entries, none of which had to do with the Font/Characters on the display. -

I get that they certified it a certain way... But it's been years and even though I don't know much about the certification process, I can't see them having to start from scratch to enlarge basically ALL of the numbers and indicators like VSI, TC, etc. They're allowed to make Software modifications, so I would address it as just a SW modification of the graphics. Hey ASPEN! If you're here, get on with it! The graphics improvements are WAY overdue. Increase to the screen pixels was nice, but a crisper tiny line just doesn't cut it. -
Aspen Rate of Turn Indicator hard to see and follow

It was one of the comments I heard when I was redoing my panel. So the one original flight instruments I kept was the Turn Coordinator. I am trying to make myself look at the Aspen though to get used to it. Not sure what I'd put in where the TC is now, but if it fails, I may look to see what's out there vs replacing it. -
Isn't that kind of the point of having one on each side? And in all the discussions in various plane checkouts, I've never had a CFI tell me to watch out for the Airspeed being off if the door pops open. ADDED: There is a big issue if you are using the Alternate Static Source. You should never open the window and although not mentioned, I guess that warning would include the door too.

Excellent! He's a good guy and I think you'll like him. Really knows Mooneys and if he's not too far away from where you'll be based, I'd recommend him as your future mechanic. I know other Mooney owners that use him and we would work your rides with each other as needed. One guy had his Annual in April and mine was in March, so it worked out perfectly for a swap planes.

Just talked to Dave. Said "it's spring, I'm swamped" but he did see your email. Either keep trying to call or send him your number so he can call back. He's often out on the ramp or doing a run-up in a plane where the remote phone he carries doesn't ring. Other comment (which I believe having him work on my plane for 25 years or so) is that he'd like to help you out because he hates seeing people (seller/buyer) get screwed over with pre-buys. Other comment was, obviously, can the plane get to him.

You can't get anyone at Air-Mod? That's strange, friend just dropped off his plane for the Annual. (You're not calling the Flight School by any chance?) Phone: 609-259-2400 Email: airmods1191@aol.com

I believe Gray would indicate the CDI/VDI Preview mode. I don't have a TXI, but the manual says: For ILS and GPS approaches, the VDI provides a preview of glideslope or glidepath deviation.
-
I did some digging. No change yet, but I believe there is about to be a change where you can use various GPS Approaches for the Checkride. (Which maybe is what you're implying too.) And the change awhile ago I think was that you can use a LPV Approach in lieu of an ILS/Precision *if* the DA is below 300ft.
-
Is that still true, at least here in the US? I thought they had changed that if the plane did not have a VOR/LOC/ILS receiver, the DPE could do different types of approaches with the GPS. The point was to just demonstrate the ability to fly the different types and it did not need to be GPS vs Ground Based any more. (Thought I read this actually changed quite a few years ago.)
-
I'm pretty sure those menus are still there. Seeing your GPS Status and RAIM Prediction are pretty important. I'll try and remember to check on my box too. And are there no VOR or plain RNAV approaches anywhere near you? But even if you still had the V needle, if you do a step down the needle will just go off to the top. Sure it will come back when you reach the next stepdown, but you should still be able to demonstrate a basic RNAV approach without Vertical Guidance. (Bet the DPE doesn't let the Private checkrides use an EFB either... )
-
They are not in one place. From the Home Page: GPS Status = System > GPS Status SBAS = System > GPS Status > SBAS (upper left on the Status page) RAIM = Utilities > RAIM Prediction > Enter Wpt/Airport, Date & Arrival Time No idea what +V is. LNAV+V ??? Not something I would think you could disable and not sure why either. What exactly are you looking for?
-
He actually has choices living in that part of the country. John Pallante and Bud Johnson are also in his area. Both I believe were (are?) Mooney Safety Board Members with lots of hours.
-
Who was it? I might know a great guy if it's not the same one.

Nose wheel collapsed with towing
PeteMc replied to PeeJee's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Don't know if you can still find one, but there were little tubes with locks that prevent them from attaching a tow to the nose wheel. Sounds like you could use one! -
Never had a problem with mine, that I know of. I use the Oxymizer cannula, so I monitor the flow with their built in gauge.
