  1. Yep, exactly. It's probably an easy switch to flip in the forum settings. I agree that it would be odd to see the initial message in a thread deleted, but I think that's ok for a few reasons: You see this occasionally on other platforms, so it's not totally unfamiliar. While the original post is important for context, there are usually other sub-conversations (or even just individual posts) that stand on their own. I would think deleting the original post would be fairly uncommon. The conversation normally devolves well beyond the initial post. Inadvertent deletions of entire threads would be avoided if it's no longer an option. I have wanted to delete my own posts after realizing that I likely asked a stupid question, but even the stupid questions have merit. Now, if I post something that I realize after the fact could come back to haunt me, that's a different issue. Hopefully, that's just a quick request to the admins in that situation, but there's probably merit in those discussions as well. A couple of solutions that come to mind: The ability to anonymize a post (either while posting or after the fact). Posts that are self-destructing (and marked as such) to begin with. A combination of both. Anyways, just my 2 cents...dropped in the suggestion box for discussion/evaluation.
  2. In this instance, I don't think that was the case. It was more taking their ball and going home. If the OP has regrets about posting, sure, let them delete their posts. The problem I have is that they can blow away all of the other (potentially) valuable contributions along with it. Once others are involved in the discussion, that conversation isn't solely the OP's to delete...they just initiated the conversation. I don't care that I lost my post. I care that I lost the 5 minutes, and I care that ~10 other contributors lost their 5 minutes as well. More importantly though, I care that the hundreds of others that could potentially find this information useful now can't find it. That's the whole point of this forum, no?
  3. I probably don't contribute as much as I should, but with 3 kids (and their sports), a fairly demanding job, and a nasty flying habit, I'm pretty time-constrained. I'm sure almost all of us are in that same boat. So when I sit down though and take the time to put together some thoughtful comments for the benefit of the community, there's nothing more frustrating that to check back and find that the topic has been deleted. If an author wants to delete a comment, that's fine (I've said some regrettable things behind a keyboard after a couple of drinks), but why are we allowing deletion of collective contributions from many of us in the community? At best, it deletes useful historical information others could have used, but at worst, it deters future contributions altogether.
  4. You don't use TravelJohns? I think my longest flight to date was PAMR - KBFI (Anchorage to Seattle). I almost love coffee as much as I love flying, and I may have filled a bag or 3 that day.
  5. By the way, if you're on the latest G1000 update, you can export your engine/flight logs directly to fly.garmin.com. I love this feature, and you can replay each of your flights complete with engine data and all. It also calculates currency and such, so it's made me a bit lazy in keeping my paper logbook up to date.
  6. I pay for the FlightCharts OnePak, which feels like a huge ripoff considering how often I really *require* updates. It's really not that hard to cross-reference with current ForeFlight data. I do that anyways even with current data for redundancy, and I suspect that most of us do the same. The problem is that it's around 2 updates per year (FlightCharts + Navdata) where the OnePak pays for itself...so it ends up being more economical to go with OnePak. I also tried Garmin Pilot when I first transitioned to the G1000, but hated it vs. ForeFlight flight planning/performance calculations....so ended up back on ForeFlight. That was a couple of years ago though, so maybe Garmin Pilot has improved since then.
  7. Do you have a 3rd seatbelt on your bench seat?
  8. I'm not in a position to give legal advice, but I wouldn't jump into litigation before you know for sure that they're denying responsibility. Anecdotally, only the attorneys have won in the situations that I have detailed knowledge of. Ask the question directly and frankly, then decide how to proceed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. I think MSCs carry insurance for this situation. See if they're willing to take any responsibility. I wouldn't get worked up about the compass light though...I'm not sure any prebuy would catch that.
  10. I'm sure it depends on the model, but mine arrived within a week. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. As it turns out, my "miracle" battery was dated 2014. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I'd have to lose the alternator, the standby alternator, and then deplete 2 batteries. Combine that with the fact that the BatteryMinder is checking the health of my batteries (in theory) between each flight, and I feel ok about pushing one to the end. Like others have mentioned, there's no guarantee that it lasts even one year...so I should be ready to lose 1 either way. Night doesn't worry me as much as losing power in the clouds (no vac). That said, I'd love to hear counterarguments if you think I'm taking undue risk here. I'd be happy to learn and change my mind if necessary. I'm also not sure if Maxwell runs load/capacity tests at annual...logbook just says "serviced batteries". I'll have to ask. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I flew with @Jerry Proctor a few years back at a PPP, and I seem to recall him having an explanation and/or lesson learned about this. Maybe he could weigh in here.
  14. Would love to get some of that 60lbs back, but I'm pretty sure that I'd run into CG issues if my batteries weighed less. Maybe Lithium Iron + MT prop?
  15. Is the XC something that is 12V-specific? I think my only option is the RG24-15? I should also mention that the previous owner was in the NE. I have owned the airplane about 5 years now, and 2 of those were in Seattle....so really only 3 years of Texas heat.
  16. One of my Concorde batteries kicked the bucket. From reviewing my logbooks, I think it's the first time that it has been replaced since the plane was built in 2008. 13 years seems like a pretty good run? I've had them on a Battery Minder for the last few years, and I'm assuming the previous owner did so as well since the airplane is wired for it. Curious to get a few datapoints around this. Brand 12/24V Time in Service (current or the longest run you had previously) Kept on BatteryMinder? If so, how often? Location (temperature is a factor, right?)
  17. My son. New (to me) Acclaim, and we were flying up to Wisconsin Dells for New Years with family. Long story, but we were way behind schedule, and the winds were gusting to high 30s when we got there. It got *real* sporty, and I fought it all the way down twice and just couldn't get it on the ground. My son was puking in the back seat, and my wife actually took her shirt off to clean it up. I don't allow anything but water in the airplane, and she saw the look of distress in my eyes when I heard it happening. Fortunately, I was too occupied with getting the airplane on the ground. We diverted to Madison, and she got out of the airplane in 20 degree weather wearing only a vest on top. She did a good job too...caught it all without it dripping off of the seat. That's the only time in 15 years of flying that it's happened, but we've kept those sick sacks available just in case ever since. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. ForeFlight accounts for altitudes, weights, and temperatures: https://foreflight.com/products/performance-plus/ I know this because I painstakingly created a profile from scratch before a prepackaged one was available...it was a beat down. It also has both LOP and ROP profiles, but you're right...it depends on how lean/rich you go. Haven't tried takeoff/landing distances in ForeFlight though...will have to give that a shot. 19. I've found them to be pretty accurate. If anything, it slightly overestimates my fuel burn. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. I also keep photos of my logbook entries in Google drive. The good thing about using Google drive is that you get OCR for free, so your logbook entries are searchable.
  21. I started building an app/website for this 7 or 8 years ago and just got derailed with life. I don't use anything for this today, but I also don't think I'd be willing to pay more than a few bucks per month on it. Just glancing at it, the free plan from planelogix doesn't provide the feature set that would justify the effort of uploading and correcting logbook entries where OCR doesn't work...and I don't think $25+ per month is worth it. Definitely curious to hear what folks are using though and whether or not mechanics are onboard for electronic entries/signatures. Maybe there are better options these days that I'm unaware of.
  22. This was 4 years ago, but I ended up taking mine (on the 3rd attempt) to San Antonio Prop Service and haven't had issues since. Sensenich picked up the tab. The technical answers above are likely correct, but the bottom line is that it wasn't done right on the first 2 attempts.
  23. I may be able to swap rides if the timing works out. My Mooney is in Longview now for the annual, and I'm going to be in Dallas for a week starting Wednesday. Shoot me a note if you're interested.
  24. Good question. I'll find out. I don't have a way of knowing that the second unit failed in the same exact way...just know that it had an "internal failure".
  25. Quick update on this. Took it to Crystal Avionics at KBAZ (who installed the GTX345R initially). This required some coordination getting back into Austin to return home, and getting back out for the repair...but Austin Tracon was super helpful in the coordination. Apparently this problem can't be troubleshot in the field, so Garmin exchanged the unit for $1,600. The install was 3 and a half years ago, so I'm a year and a half out of warranty . The overhauled exchange unit was also DOA, so I'm now waiting on a second exchange unit. This begs the question though...are these things really that flakey? Anyone else having similar issues? For ~$6k, I would expect this unit to last longer than 3.5 years, and now I have no confidence that the replacement unit will last much longer since the first exchange also had an "internal failure". Crystal can't even tell me how/why the unit failed because Garmin doesn't tell them.
