Looking for S-Tec 30 or 50 Autopilot STC and Photos
Ragsf15e replied to Anzaldi01's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
To do it legally, you need to transfer the stc to the new aircraft via the manufacturer/stc holder. For stec autopilots it’s not really done. You don’t want old/outdated/unsupported systems anyway. Save up and put in a truetrac (aerocruz 100) or garmin ap. Truetrac is probably cheapest solution. -
'65 M20C Exhaust has Major Cracks
Ragsf15e replied to Fusco's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
You can generally send your old exhaust to awi or Acorn or any other aircraft welding facility no matter its condition. It will come back looking like new. Have you or the mechanic contacted them? -
Current install cost of Garmin 650xi and 750xi
Ragsf15e replied to Mark89114's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Do you also have a gfc500 autopilot? I wonder if your primary gps doesn’t have a nav radio, can you still fly an ils with the autopilot using your nav radio (radio 2)? -
Roll Steering with only a single GI275?
Ragsf15e replied to Irmin's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I’m not saying it’s perfect, but does the stc allow just retaining the TC, alt , aspd vsi as the backup? Im not so sure you need two… -
I sometimes see egts that high after descending from lop cruise. Say cruising at 10,000’, nose down, don’t touch anything else. Egts start to climb slowly during decent. Maybe around 4 or 5,000’ they set off the yellow “caution” on my jpi930 as they pass 1500. I guess I’m saying maybe those egts could be possible at lower altitude near peak? I don’t think egt probes usually fail this way, but I agree it’s worth checking?

One other thing… if you’re ever considering doing a gfc500, just stay completely garmin, forget the ifd. There are plenty of people who have ifd’s working with gfc500, but enough horror stories that I wouldn’t go that route. -

Yes, unfortunately, the previous racks (and potentially the antennas too) will have to be replaced, so it’s pretty good panel surgery. if you’re looking for options (I like garmin), Avidyne has a nice slide in touch screen option that would be half the price or less as it can use the 430w rack. -
Very true, which is why I had to take my shot when I had it!

Yes. Then I’ll be crying for help, true enough.

Engine Monitor Recommendations
Ragsf15e replied to gwav8or's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If the rest of your panel is garmin, use a garmin (either -275 or g3x). I have a jpi 930 and like it a lot, but not everything integrates well with my other garmin stuff in the panel. -275(s) may require less panel surgery than other options as they can fit an existing instrument hole if you have one available. -
M20E Winter Operations
Ragsf15e replied to MooneyMunnerlyn's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Personally, I’m a fan of a little heat over a long time. I think applying a lot of heat for 15-20 minutes doesn’t actually heat the inside of the engine. Do I have proof? No. It just seems like a huge hunk of metal and oil isn’t going to warm evenly from a quick, hot “warmup”. Since the oil pan is exposed, potentially it does heat the oil which is good. I like to use a remote switch (mine is cellular but you can use wifi if available). I couple that with a small ceramic heater on low with a dryer vent pumped into the cowl flap. Typically turn it on 3+ hours (night before is good) before flying. Engine is evenly warmed even at very cold temps. It blows dry air as a bonus. If you’re on the ramp, you have less options, so a quicker, hotter heat is probably better than nothing. Or get a real engine heater and find a way to plug it in. -
100% what @EricJ said. It’s likely that the vr and alternator are fine but you have a loose or corroded contact. Check the connections at the alternator first.

There was an Egypt Air suicidal pilot too… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EgyptAir_Flight_990

If you talk to Jimmy Garrison, as mentioned above, you will probably save yourself a lot of time. You might even save yourself money because he will save you from a bad airplane or at least tell you what you’re getting. If you explain to him what your mission is, he will validate, what type you’re looking for, and he will go find it if he doesn’t have one available.

New (to you) airplanes seem to know how to break…

I’ve had Old Republic for the last three years. I send them my check, they send me a document that says I’m insured. No other experience. I went through airspeed insurance. He’s here on Mooney space often. he said, old republic was at least as good as the one I had before, which was global. He knows the ins and outs of exactly what they cover, and how they handle claims.@Parker_Woodruff

You can check a few things like turning off the squelch to see if you hear them faintly or not at all and adjust volume based on static. If you don’t hear static, might also be a problem with your audio panel? Is there an “rx” receive indicator that shows when it’s receiving?

You’ll eventually find that O2 is a major issue in these small planes. One you never worry about in your jet. If you fly above 10k without it, you’ll eventually feel crappy. If you’re on it at 25k and it fails, will you know in time? And will you be able to get back down or do you have a backup? Does your wife like an uncomfortable mask for several hours? Also, it can be expensive to refill and maintain. Before i’m flamed, of course planes with O2 are good and I definitely use a portable system, but it’s definitely one more thing to consider, especially really high (above 20ish).
-
True, although either are probably enough for ~6 hours total, 5 hours flying with 1 hour reserves is more butt time than most people want. Not everyone feels that way…
-
Cliff notes: J-~150-165ktas 8.5-12gph Lean of peak (efficient) or rich of peak (slightly faster) easy No built in O2 Simple maintenance Will get you into the low-mid teens in altitude if you must, but best around 6-10k neither J or K are deice equipped (except a few encore Ks) so IFR is fine but no ice A k can get over some weather better

I’ve had my Mooney for about 10 years. No regrets on the F model that I got, but you really have to get your mind around spending as much as you can on the purchase (with enough in reserve for the engine, avionics and maintenance). Looking back, I almost wish I would’ve bought more airplane, because I could’ve spent a little more on the purchase at the time. If you try to save money by finding a “good deal”, it’s actually a bad deal. If you don’t want a project, You really need to find an airplane priced right but at the top end of your price range. if you must have a turbo, and all the turbo airplanes, you can afford, are on the low end of turbo in the high end of your price range, then there’s your problem. especially with the dogs, I might really consider an ovation or a J model. Either one might cost more than that K for a good one, but they can go plenty high to get over the mountains. Nothing wrong with the turbo if you find one priced right.
-
I really like using progressives and didn’t take long to get use to them after 45 years with no glasses. For me, everything is “far” except reading a map or phone, so the instrument panel is “far” and it’s easy to see it and outside.
