  1. One other thing to consider is that an auction like this is for cash buyers. That's going to be a pretty limited group. A "regular" Acclaim buyer is likely to finance the purchase for 20 years and probably has a trade-in.
  2. I'm pretty sure he's still around. Last I heard he was still a Professor Emeritus over at THE Ohio State University.
  3. I got vectored into a small cell one night while getting vectors for an ILS. At 3000 ft with the AI reading level and the VSI pegged at a 1500 fpm descent It was the only time I actually thought I was going to die in my Mooney. Fortunately that downdraft almost immediately turned into an updraft. ATC wasn't particularly helpful as they admonished me to "maintain 3000". That's also the first time I told ATC "unable". After that, no more night IFR for this guy. I also bought an XM weather receiver.
  4. Aren't takeoff flaps required by the POH? Surely everyone uses flaps on takeoff...
  5. That's just the ATC designation for all non-turbo M20's.
  6. If you are planning on getting your complex signoff in your new Mooney I'm guessing you don't have any retract time. That will likely mean more dual time for insurance and higher insurance rates for a while. For what it's worth, the E, F, and J don't require a high-performance signoff. That is only needed for engines over 200HP.
  7. There's always the fuel selector valve.
  8. I used to go see Doc Terrell in Hillsboro for my medicals. It's good to meet another Ohio Mooney owner. Maybe we should have an Ohio Mooney fly-in. Those guys in NJ would be jealous.
  9. The O-360 on my M20D had reconditioned cylinders. The previous owner replaced two at about 800 hours and I replaced the other two at about 1200 hours. The two I replaced had cracks around the spark plug holes. After removal we also found cracks in the piston pins. I don't know how many total hours those cylinders had or how they were treated for their first 1000 hours on that run.
  10. Where do keep your plane?
  11. I had mine done at Tiffin Aire in Tiffin, OH (16G). They have a full-service prop shop. I flew in and they did the ECI while I went to lunch. I only had them do it once and then I opted for a hub replacement at the Hartzell factory in Piqua, OH. At the time they offered a very good deal if you brought the plane to them.
  12. I had to put one down on its belly once when the gear wouldn't extend. The thought of trying to get the prop stopped did cross my mind but in the end the risk of complicating an already stressful situation did not seem like a good idea. I kept telling myself - fly the plane and don't make a bad situation worse.
  13. I got distracted once and started taxiing my old M20D with the towbar still attached. Fortunately someone else on the field spotted it and flagged me down. Since then I never leave the bar attached to the gear unless I'm holding the other end in my hand. If I have to walk away briefly I detach the bar and set it on the ground. I may fly away without my towbar someday but at least I won't fly away with it attached.
  14. My 1981 M20J is 1794 empty.
  15. The change in manifold pressure and the engine vibration do not necessarily mean that the sensor is not malfunctioning. The correlation could be spurious or could be related but not in a meaningful way (e.g. whatever is happening with your MP is inducing the sensor malfunction). In a laboratory setting if we encounter anomolous readings from an instrument the first step is to recalibrate the instrument and repeat the experiment before drawing any conclusions about the data.
  16. That's not entirely true. There are requirements under 91.417 regarding documentation of AD compliance that must be "retained and transferred with the aircraft at the time the aircraft is sold." This includes the method of compliance. In order to meet this requirement with only a current annual the log entry would have to document the method of compliance for every applicable AD for your aircraft. http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?rgn=div8&node=14:2.0.1.3.10.5.7.10
  17. You may be able to get that restriction removed by passing an alternate test. http://www.aopa.org/Pilot-Resources/Medical/Medical-Certification-and-Conditions/Vision/Members-Only-AOPA-Pilot-Information-Center-Vision-Color-Restriction-Removal.aspx
  18. Postponing a flight because something doesn't look right or feel right is a good way to stay alive.
  19. These Mooneys practically land themselves.

  21. In my M20D I shut the fuel off on final once when I had reason to believe the landing wasn't going to end well. The prop kept windmilling all the way in.
  22. That was my favorite runway at KIOW. It felt like it was almost as wide as it was long. Were you coming in over the hill onto 18? It sure felt like you were close to the trees coming in that direction.
  23. My M20D had the same hard line. It developed a leak after some avionics work. It appeared that they had bent the line out of the way which kinked the line and lead to a crack. Jeff
  24. I had a leak in the fuel pressure line in my M20D a few years back. During some avionics work they bent the line out of the way and it caused a kink which lead to a crack. My CFII felt it dripping on her leg and I was able to get it fixed before it became a serious problem.
  25. Genius!!! I would totally buy one! Oh yeah, I did...
